So are you trying to make the game look worse than it is? Or were these actually the best screens you could find?

'Cause personally i thought bits of AR looked great.

Yep, theres 3 (or 2 i cant remember) of those secret pipe rooms in the game. I never bothered to find them though.

Yup, there's a bunch of warp pipes hidden around various levels. They're useless, since you can select levels from the main menu, but it's still for fun.

For $20 or $30, I just might add Advent Rising to my collection.

Right there with you. You'd think with all the hell Majesco has been going through due to this game that there would be a fire sale on this game.

Is that a fact? I'll look for them in my next playthrough.

There are legitimate ways to get to them -- you might have noticed "hidden" switches around various levels that appear to do nothing. Activating them in sequence will open bridges to new areas.

Using the cheat codes to unlock all your abilities earlier in the game helps a great deal, though. Check http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox/code/914754.html for some pointers.

Overall the game's a bit of a mess -- imbalanced challenges let you breeze through most of the levels with both triggers squeezed, until you suddenly hit a really nice polished spot that shows off what potential the game might have had (some of the later boss fights).

For all the hamfisted schlock the story delivered, I have to admit I'm half looking forward to seeing what the sequels offer, especially in the hands of different developers and on different platforms.

I'm still waiting to see some reviews of the PC version, heck I haven't even seen it on shelves yet. Is Majesco holding off on it to clean it up a bit perhaps?

I can't believe that both this and Psychonauts for the Xbox still retail for $50. Price drop come on! BG&E was amazing, and it went to like $20 after two weeks. Drop both Advent Rising and Psychonauts to $30 and I'll pick them up instantly.

Comes out in about a week.

Would you settle for $35 on Psychonauts?
Psychonauts for $35 at EB
Dammit people, buy this!

Are you still mad that Advent Rising is superior in every way?

Technically, that is absolutely untrue regardless of opinion.

From a technology standpoint, Advent Rising is one of the most broken games released this gen. It's nearly falling apart at the seams. The game is still very enjoyable, but those problems can't be ignored and aren't present in Psychonauts.

advent rising:

+you could sort of see that they had some interesting and daring narrative concepts

-but the story was stupid
-the graphics were awful
-it crashed a lot
-the gameplay was broken as hell
-the decent music was implemented poorly
-it crashed, A LOT

psychonauts:

+hilarious
+beautiful
+compelling
+gameplay not broken at all
+music amazing
+some of the best platformer level concepts ever
+fucking hilarious

-gameplay got a bit collectathonish

GIVE UP DEMI

Fixed

I resisted the urge to delete the crash thing even though ive never seen the game crash. I also left the "gameplay not broken at all" for psychonauts even though the FBI level with finding the various objects was dodgy.

Most of AR problems are patchy at worst, i already posted some screens of it where its no where near Awful looking...there are problems with the gunplay but it was much better when the psychic powers kicked in.

But whatever i know the way things go around here and im not in the mood to argue to the death about it.

Now you're just making stuff up.

[12:30pm] <Belfast> trolling Advent Rising is fun
[12:33pm] <Belfast> i haven't even played Advent Rising

Typical Belfast, has to lash out at a product he hasn't even touched. Meanwhile, I have completed both Psychonauts and Advent Rising, so I know where the clear winner resides.

So it is, when you are the demi factor.

Yeah, yeah. I can make up IRC quotes, too.

[12:45pm] <demi> i don't know what i'm talking about
[12:53pm] <demi> i am playing advent rising
[12:53pm] <demi> no, wait, my mistake, i just shit my pants

Clearly you can. Now why don't you go play Advent Rising before lashing out? Kobun Heat did, but he probably only did the first 15 minutes, so he's an idiot and thus wrong.

Always running, you will always be a coward, Belfast.

The cognitive dissonance necessary to consider Advent Rising superior to Psychonauts is so tremendously beyond what a normal person is capable of, it's possible that demi himself may represent the next phase in human evolution.

Which is not to say he ain't crazy.

My job here is to represent the neutral party that is interested in this title. On one hand I have demi's appraisal which he reminds me about every day and the other hand I have the rest of GAF dismissing it. I was actually interested in this title before the backlash hit so I should at least give it a rental.

Come on, Advent Rising isn't much worse than KOTOR 2, Summoner, and dozens of other games that have shipped with a lot of bugs. In many ways its better since most bugs aren't game killing, just a lot of poly clipping, chuggy moments, and general roughness.

For the interested "neutral party" don't listen to the haters, they're clueless. Advent Rising is just flat out fun. The boss fights can get frustrating since they require specific, sometimes less than obvious, implementations of your powers. 90% of the game is kick ass though, as long as you don't mind the rough edges. I beat it on a rental, its pretty easy to do, so if you're interested take that route. Having beaten the game I still plan to buy it when its between $20-$30, for me thats about as big a complement as I can give a game.

My $15 Half.com copy of Advent Rising came today, and so far it's not bad. The frame rate is bad, the graphics are outdated and the controls are a little jerky (the auto targeting set up is just idiotic, couldn't this have been mapped to another button?).

Even with those complaints, its a fun $15 game.
