Advent Rising ships for PCs

Well I just picked this up yesterday for the Xbox used but haven't played it yet. I haven't been keeping tabs on the game but I did see a video review of it and the game looks really good so I decided to grab it. How is the game overall? The only reason why I bought it used was that I could return it if I wasn't happywith the game and use the credit towards paying off more of the X360. I think the video review made mention tha the game had frame rate issues but it was more than fine for me.

No impressions?

Just as well I suppose,I read the manual, now its time to jump on in.
You already have it? Please let us know how well it actually runs...

I enjoyed what I played on XBOX, but decided to stop due to horrible performance problems.

I'd definitely be interested in downloading a demo of Advent Rising on the PC...If I played the demo and liked it, I'd definitely pick up some version of the game.

Visually, Advent Rising is leaps and bounds ahead of the last builds we saw. Gone are the terrible framerates, wildly swinging cameras, and gut-wrenching game-stopping chugs of slowness.

Angelus, tell me how you feel about Advent Rising, I'd be interested to hear the impressions of someone who has actually played the game.

Demi-ok. Having no real expectations from the game other than the video review I saw on IGN last week,I think the game is pretty fun so far, that's with about 40 minutes of gameplay though.

What I absolutely like are the gun and melee battles. Its like you are in for a ride around every new area with enemies busting through your ships hull while you and your shipmates take cover and try to handle the task at hand. Like hiding behind pillars, chucking grenades and wiping out some of the bigger aliens that are tough to take down with convetional gunfire. So far the option to evade gun fire by leaping and side stepping also have a nice touch to them. Ofcourse some folks are probably going to hate the framerates inolved within all this,it sorta reminds me of Kotar, where you would enter a large area and instantly you see a hit on the frame rate. I really don't care though,I can alway bypass those things just as long as its not too severe, like where you can almost count the frames.

The game isn't perfect by any means. Like the game could have used more time in the shop to improve your character animations and the auto targeting is abit weird when you first are getting to know the control scheme for the game. But its pretty much secondary to me now. I had to power down the Xbox because I knew better than to keep playing,I would have been there spending too much time with the game and I need my sleep, heh. So tomorrow I'm so going to be looking forward to spending alot of time with the game.

Now ofcourse I haven't even played the areas where you man gun turrets and spend time dog fighting in space so I'm hopefull they turn out ok. But so far I'm quite happy with the game. I think I'll return this used copy at GameStop and exchange it for a new one. The gun and melee action are pretty slick thus far, thats the bulk of what I've played. The games presentation seems pretty good too, which is also a plus when you have a great playing game.

I don't think there are any dog fights in the game, but you do get to pilot ships (on the ground) and such.

Have you unlocked your powers yet? That's when the game gets way better.

And when the the game slows down when you do a dodge attack, it's meant to do that.

I guess it's easy to fix imaginary bugs.

Play this game. rent it if you want, just make sure you play it. Dont believe the anti-hype.

No dog fights, thats abit of a downer. So you just fly your ship to specific points for travel then?

And no I haven't unlocked any powers. I'm very early in the game,I still haven't made it off the ship,I'm at the point where I'm suppose to rescue my fiance. I have to admit I'm not the type to blow through my games though,so you probably finished this area in half the time that I'm attempting to.

I saw some of the craziness that you inflect upon your enemies with the powers you unlock, thats what drew me to buying the game. Your constantly doing wild jumps while throwing enemies around like they were puppets. The review made mention that as good as the game is-that the frame rate is bothersome at times, saying it was one of the only things that made the game not quite what it could have been. We'll see I guess. Does it really drop to the point where its *REALLY BAD* I realize I'm very early in the game, but the frame rate doesn't even bother me,I'm too busy having a great time so far. I mean I've enjoyed games with frame rates issues like Turok2 and ShadowMan,so it would have to be pretty severe for me to come away disapointed.

About friggin' time. I was going to grab this for the Xbox, but after reading about all the technical issues the game had, I decided to hold out for the PC version instead. I actually was hoping it would come in today (the ship date was listed as today on EB's website, and the stores near me usually get most new titles on that day), but I guess I'll have to see if I can snag it tomorrow before work. Hopefully I'll come away from it as hyped as Demi--I love sci-fi action games, so I want to believe.

The beginning credits where you fly your ship to the main ship is probably the only space travel I can think of. Most of the "dog fights" you'll encounter are on planets, where you can take control of tanks sort of like Halo/Halo 2.

If you can tolerate Turok 2 and Shadow Man, I *really* doubt you'll have a problem with Advent Rising. The game can slow down yes, but if it bothers you, all you have to do is reset your cache on the Xbox (load 3 different games I think?), and it should remedy the situation rather quickly.

Once you get your powers, you'll enjoy the game a whole lot more. But it starts pretty slow, keep at it!

Wait until you're running around with dual rocket launchers :D

The article demi linked was written in ancient history.. and was a preview not a review. :lol

Advent Rises Again
GlyphX has returned from the dark with real progress on this potentially explosive action game. Impressions, screens and movies.

here's the review

Whoops.

Gamers who were originally interested in the Xbox release of Advent Rising will immediately want to know if the frame rate issues persist on the PC. Thankfully, the game now runs smoothly without slowdown even on a densely populated battlefield. My Radeon 9800 pro easily pushed the game along at even the higher settings. Effects like the way space is warped around Gideon's surge attack and the fiery sparks of explosions are impressive visual additions.

OK I just saw the video review again. Theres suppose to be glitches bugs and glitches along the game but the reviewer claims that theyre not awful, they just seem to happen sometimes. maybe I'm too tolerant but thats ok with me. As long as I can reload a starting point and it doesnt occur again in this area(and thats what the reviewer claims ) then I'm still still as optimistic as ever about spending time with the game.:)

So if I was capable of enjoying Turok2 and Shadow Man I'm set with this game thern, awesome;) It really doesn't seem an issue,I saw some of the issues with the frame rate in the review and I was ok with what I saw. The game looks to pack quite an adventure too-the reviewer said the areas you play in were pretty expansive? I hope I'm not getting carried away here but man I'm starting to think there is alot more meat on this game than I thought there was,I freakin' love huge stages to travel through. I'm not expecting Turok 2 type stages in size (those were rdiculus yet fun.) Have you beaten the game? If so what was your play time? Just curious. I usually take twice as long to finish a game, which is why I often dont play through a game more than once. I take my sweet time the first time through exploring every little corner that the game offers. Hopefully th game is a 10 hour play through, which would mean 17-20 for me.

There are glitches and bugs, I've encountered a couple. One was where I had just finished defending a base from an assault of Seekers (with dual rocket launchers!), and I was supposed to enter a base and ride the elevator.

Problem was, I would enter, and nothing would happen! I read around the official boards, and some other people had that effect as well. I simply had to restart and do it over (via a previous save point in the level), which is good because I love jumping around like a chimp with dual rocket launchers blowing aliens to hell and back.

The elevator then worked.

Another bug/glitch is in the aiming. I would lock onto a turret/enemy to destroy it, but Gideon wouldn't shoot it, or I couldn't flick out to another enemy. You might encounter this one a few times, I forgot how I remedied it...

I was forgiving of the problems I encountered, because I was too immersed with the game, I wanted to continue to see how it ended.

So if I was capable of enjoying Turok2 and Shadow Man I'm set with this game thern, awesome;) It really doesn't seem an issue,I saw some of the issues with the frame rate in the review and I was ok with what I saw. The levels are *big* (city, planet assault, underground area, etc.), but they're also pretty straight-forward, you can run all the way across to the other side of the city, but it's so empty. Most of the enemies simply group up at a certain point, where all you've gotta do is more acrobatics while launching them into space or snapping them with ice shards.

I hope I'm not getting carried away here but man I'm starting to think there is alot more meat on this game than I thought there was,I freakin' love huge stages to travel through. I did finish the game, but I can't recall my playtime off hand. It took me about...over the course 5 days to complete it? But as I said, I was too immersed with the story and gameplay, I had to keep going. I'm sure it'll take you a bit if you go at it bit by bit.

Oh yeah, don't forget to stick around after the credits. It doesn't end there.

What do you think of the music so far? I felt that was a very huge benefactor in enjoying this game, it really sets the mood and such. It's also the reason why I enjoyed games such as Beyond Good & Evil and Freedom Fighters, the music was very good in putting me in the game.

As much as the game is dogged for its issue (deservingly so in some but not all cases), this remains as one of my favorite of the year.

Whoa whoa WHOA!!!!!!!

Did you just attempt to suggest that the XBOX version DOES NOT suffer from those problems? Ghost, Advent Rising on XBOX has quite possibly the worst framerate I've seen in a retail game this generation. We're talking sub-10 fps for long periods of time during any major battle. The framerate is GARBAGE, there are tons of awful pauses and skips EVERYWHERE (and I've tested this on several XBOX systems), and there are just so many other crazy, almost show stopping, problems. It was as if they mistakenly released an alpha of the game.

Thing is, I really enjoyed what I played and am going to go for the PC version now. I decided to stop playing the XBOX game (which I rented) and wait for this so that I might enjoy the game properly.

The XBOX version is, IMO, completely f*cking broken and should be stripped from the shelves and fixed. Perfect Dark framerates do not fly this gen. No sir.

There are bugs as well, but I can look past those (events not triggering, crashes, etc.)

Good game. Broken technology.

Sounds like the PC version fixes all of that, though...

Oh, but I wonder about the videos? The videos on XBOX were a mess. I know they were hiding level loads behind these videos, but still, the framerate seen in the video clips was as awful as the game itself. I hope they don't resort to showing low-res, poorly compressed, ultra choppy videos on the PC. That would really kill the presentation...

As far as the whole "choose your own story" type stuff goes, there really isn't much to offer. There's about maybe 2 or 3 parts where you can actually make a choice. Don't worry too much about it.

If Demi likes it, so should you! ®

I'm interested in the PC version since I hear it fixes all the atrocious bugs I've heard the Xbox version has. Plus it'll look real nice and play incredibly smooth on my rig or so I hope. Most of the complaints leveled against the game were the horrible problems that plagued it, I wonder if the game were a seamless bug free experience (or close to it) what would the review community have rated it.

I was thinking of checking this game out on PC, but when I saw the recommended system specs for the thing I almost died. :(
