Affliction Day of Reckoning: Fedor vs Arlovski & UFC 93 Thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
Might as well double them up into one thread. Hope this passes muster for Evilore. The Affliction card will get more traffic attached to a regular mma thread. If you watch UFC 93 ahead of time since it's an Ireland card and must post spoiler tag your posts so as not to ruin it for the people who want to watch it that evening.

will be interesting to see how shogun looks in this fight coming off those surgeries to his knee

it probably is a little much to hope for a return to form from his pride fc days, but it would be nice if he has a good outing because hes still very young

The Henderson Franklin fight isn't a sexy fight but its most likely going to be a good one.

You kind of have to feel for both guys. They have to fight at light heavyweight because neither of them can beat Silva although they both could probably beat nearly everyone else in the world at that weight class.

Franklin vs Hendo would have been a MEGAFIGHT a few years ago.. and i still want to see it.

Hendo just seemed dismissive of Franklin on the countdown show. Franklin was mocking him.
Im pumped for the fight. Should probably be free on spike though.. not PPV.

Franklin is still pretty popular. He gets a pretty good pop when he comes out. Less so for Hendo since he is a little less well known to casual UFC fans despite his pride days.

You also gotta take into account it's an out of the country ppv.

We got Bisping vs. Leben on the last one so by comparion this is a fight of the gods.

Randy Couture is picking GSP.

"We've seen the best B.J. Penn we've seen in recent years, but that was at 155. He had abs, he looked in shape, he had to train to be down there. The question I have is how much quality weight in this time period can he put on to deal with the size difference between him and Georges. ...

"At that weight class, at 170, I like Georges. Georges has all the tools. He seems to be within himself mentally, going out and putting together good performances, and demonstrating a lot of skills that people didn't know he had. There's some tough things for B.J. to deal with there."

Wrong thread I think although I don't mind the discussion since it's 3 straight weeks with PPV's and they will all bleed together.

oh, I saw.

Gotta talk about GSP/Penn somewhere. Might as well be here. :p

The Franklin vs. Henderson fight should be a good fight. If I had to throw a prediction out there I would say Franklin in round 2 by TKO. I don't think the Coleman vs. Shogun will be anything exciting, but I think Shogun will take it.

As for the Affliction card, I have see if I can find a bar around here that will be showing it. I haven't had too much luck at my usual watering holes with non-UFC PPVs being shown (I think this card might be different though). Though I have to say that the headline fight of Fedor vs. Arlovski is the most excited I have been for a non-UFC fight in a long time. I'll be rooting for Arlovski in that one.

GSP defeats Penn in round 1 by GNP!

dem said:
Arlovski is afraid to get hit

Fedor is going to maul him

I would have agreed until that recent Arlovski fight although of course I'm sure the general consensus is that the typical Arlovski will show up.

It's obviously extremely difficult to pick against Fedor until someone actually beats him.

danny all the way!

shitty card though. dont care much about the rest of the fights. the affliction card isnt much better IMO, but fedor killing arlovski should be fun.

"GSP"s a quitter"

Fuck you, BJ. You're the one who quit in the first fight, doing fuck all after the first round. GSP's the one who dug deep after being bloodied and pulled out the victory.

how about the official mma thread? i know 93 isnt all that exciting, but i personally would like to keep any discussion about it focused here, without the gsp/penn stuff...

Wut, i did not know that Rousimar Palhares was fighting on saturday, how nice!

Other than that, i´m afraid to write or say predictions because they tend to go exactly the other way then.

Seriously if you guys want to make some money, look at my picks and bet the opposite :lol

UFC 93
Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson
Hhmm I want Franklin to win, but would rather see Hendo vs Bisping in Ultimate Fighter.

Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio Rua
I'm still not sold on Shogun, his best weapon (foot stomp) is illegal in the UFC and he should be fighting at Middleweight.

Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang
Hoping Kang lives up to the hype.

Affliction
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski
Arlovski and Roach seemed to have pissed off Fedor. Fedor by armbar.

Renato Sobral vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
I think Luis Cane beat the fight out of Soku, after this he'll go back to Japan to fight in K1.

Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares

Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio Rua
Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang - I don't know why you guys are doubting Belcher
Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle - I don't trust Davis keeping it standing, he's gonna have a great game plan
Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares

Main Card
Light Heavyweight bout: Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson

I will give rich another chance- maybe 205 is the place he can have some sort of resurgence. Rich has only lost 3 times- twice to Silva and to Machida in '03. I think we give him a lot less credit than he deserves because his loses to Silva are really stuck in our minds. Dan is good, but I am not going to believe in him this time. He is to one-dimensional for me.

Light Heavyweight bout: Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio Rua

Who knows= maybe Shogun will come out like Filho and we will all look like idiots. I can't put much faith in Coleman here, but in reality we know so little about both of these guys right now and where they are really at, I certainly wouldn't bet on this fight.

Middleweight bout: Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang

Belcher is a dick, don't cheer for him. I don't think much of Kang either, but I hate Alan Belcher.

Welterweight bout: Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle

I like Lytle, so I will pick him.

Middleweight bout: Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares

I am willing to bet this the last time we will see Horn in the UFC after the performances he has put together, Palhares should be the easy pick IMO.

Preliminary Card
Welterweight bout: Martin Kampmann vs. Alexandre Barros

Kampmann had a lot of hype, but he is facing a guy he should easily beat here.

Light Heavyweight bout: Eric Schafer vs. Antonio Mendes

I like Schafer, he has a good ground game and seems like a tough guy.

Light Heavyweight bout: Tomasz Drwal vs. Ivan Serati
Welterweight bout: Thomas Egan vs John Hathaway
Lightweight bout: Nate Mohr vs. Dennis Siver

for my last picks i will just do whatever sherdog tells me to do.

Great Fight but I think Franklin is underated and Hendo is a bit overated at this stage in his career. btw Franklin has only lost three times in his career and that was twice to Silva and once to Machida.
Light Heavyweight bout: Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson

Seems like a no brainer
Light Heavyweight bout: Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio Rua

I'll take Kang because of experience
Middleweight bout: Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang

Wild and anything could happen but I'll take Davis
Welterweight bout: Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle

Even though I think Horn is shot I have a weird feeling he could win this but I'll take Palhares
Middleweight bout: Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares

Impossible to pick against Fedor until he loses but at least this should be a good fight and better than the Sylvia one.
WAMMA Heavyweight Championship bout: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski

Barnett
Heavyweight bout: Josh Barnett vs. Gilbert Yvel

I have a feeling the predator could return to form outside of the cage but I'll still take Babalu
Light Heavyweight bout: Renato Sobral vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou

Lindland in a typically boring lindland style fight
Middleweight bout: Matt Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort

Should be a good fight but I'll go with Horodecki
Lightweight bout: Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon

I don't know Kirill Sidelnikov so I'll pick Buentello ;)
Heavyweight bout: Paul Buentello vs. Kiril Sidelnikov

lol. Funny. I made this post before seeing the one above and seeing he also posted the Franklin factoid.

I'd never pick Eric Schafer to win. Guy is not good at all.

Franklin vs. Henderson
- I think Henderson is a bit over rated, I think Franklin has a more complete game and will be able to out work him in this fight.

Coleman vs. Rua
- The only real question is what kind of condition Rua is in after all of his injuries. Coleman looked tiny at the weigh in's, I think the cut isn't going to do him many favors. Anyways, barring any freak accidents this is Shogun's fight.

Belcher vs. Kang
- Belcher is an overconfident dick. I'll enjoy watching him get embarrassed yet again.

Davis vs. Lytle
- Giving this to Lytle purely on experience. Davis has crisper stand up, but no matter what you throw at Lytle he just keeps coming. I think Davis will dominate early and get worn down later.

Horn vs. Palhares
- Jeremy Horn really has no place in the UFC. He's long since passed his prime. Palhares will make him look foolish here.

Kampmann vs. Barros
- This is a feeder fight to test out Kampmann at 170. As long as the weight cut doesn't drain him too much, he should win this.

The last 4 fights don't really matter much to me.

i have come across him a few times in grappling tournaments that i think he went to just to see where he was at, and the fact that he didn't tear through everyone made him quit competing. he was hand fed most of his earlier fights and only took ones that he thought he would win (just look at his opponents records) to keep his record good looking. the only reason he got picked up by the UFC is because of his connection to clementi. the fact that anyone gives him any respect is baffling to me.

oh shit, i thought you were talking about kang at first, lol

Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson
My pick, Rich. Either Dan ends it by a flash ko early or Rich by face painting. Although this is only 3 rds so Decision Dan may steal it, idk. Should be a great fight though.

Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio Rua
I want prime Rua back. Take some roids if you have to.. or not. This Coleman fight should just be little more than to get the ring rust out. Rua better run through Coleman so ufc can throw him against the real competitors in the division. If not, see you at 185.

Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang
Kang Wang Gang. Yeah, Kang should take this.

Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle
Lytle being better on the ground and having a great chin should mean it's his fight. But he might want to stand against Davis the whole fight to put on a show. I'll pick Davis because of that.

Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares
Was trying to remember Palhares. Yeah, he looked great in a losing effort to Hendo. The ufc probably thought so to and are building him up with this fight.

WAMMA Heavyweight Championship bout: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski
I hope Andrei puts up a fight cuz boy was the Tim fight a big let down. Andrei by flash ko or Fedor will win by any other way. But I hope it's a good fight.

Heavyweight bout: Josh Barnett vs. Gilbert Yvel
Is it wrong that I want Barnett to lose? He'll likely win but I don't like the guy.

Light Heavyweight bout: Renato Sobral vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
Unless Soku does another flash ko, Babalu will own him.

Middleweight bout: Matt Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort
I'll pick Vitor since he's been a little more active?

Mendes = no bjj

Thiago Silva subbed him easy, but if Schafer can't get it to the ground its gg, cause Mendes will pick him apart.

Schafer has this fight in the bag.

Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson - Rich Franklin will pick his shots and beat Dan on the feet. If Dan does take him down, Rich will get back up and get back to work.

Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio Rua - Shogun by submission in the second round. Coleman sucks.

Alan Belcher vs. Denis Kang - Everyone thinks Denis Kang will come right into the UFC and smash Belcher easy? LOL. Quote me now. Belcher by KO.

Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle - Davis won't stand for too long with Lytle once he feels his power. He will attempt to take Chris down but don't forget that Chris Lytle is a black belt in bjj. It should be no problem if the fight hits the ground. Lytle by decision.

Jeremy Horn vs. Rousimar Palhares - Horn is a gate keeper. Palhares by sub.

Timedog

good credit (by proxy)
i think arlovski will win. he looks cooler than fedor and is more powerful and has a better chin. fedor looks like a dork.

Damn, I wish Dana would put some of these stupid oddly timed overseas cards on Spike TV more often. Seems like a pretty crappy card to be headlining a PPV, meanwhile they have another PPV 2 weeks after. Guess Dana is going to milk the cash cow for all its worth though.

The overseas cards are always relatively shitty. With that size stable of fighters they have signed you need someway for these guys to fight.

They tried, but couldn't get the broadcast deal done in time. The next UK card (UFC 95) is free on spike.

If Dana was just trying to milk the cash cow, he wouldn't even bother with cards overseas.

Ya blame Spike for this not being on cable. From I've read if they show a card on spike, then spike pays for all the promotion and they didn't want to take that hit twice in Q1.

Im very happy that i dont have to stay up until 4am to watch the ufc for once.

And this might be the wrong ufc thread but:
Watching ufc primetime was weird, i was surprised that they made BJ look like a dick. Everything he said felt silly, a spoiled kid talking about KILLING GSP and that gsp is a quitter.
Coming from a guy who left the ufc more then randy and tito, this feels wrong and stupid.

I hope that gsp wins, a bj win would fuck up TWO weight divisions.
