After using the Switch 2 for a week I'm glad I have a Steam Deck

lol at people trying to justify their Steam Deck purchase. Big ass weak system that can't even play many games properly and uses FSR garbage to upscale an already shitty looking settings for a shitter image quality.

People who buy Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 for Nintendo games. Come talk to me about the deck when it can play Switch 2 play exclusive games.

Here we have Switch owners pretending they have the best gaming device money can buy.

In the handheld space, it is. Very clearly proven with this thread. If you are coming into the gaming space with with $80 exclusives and costs associated to upgrading visuals and performance on old games and a $450 price tag for your device, you better be coming to the space with a device better than the $400 Steam Deck, $550 OLED Steam Deck (only the screen is the difference), or even the theoretical Steam Deck 2.

Being able to mod my games change settings to increase performance is a huge advantage that Nintendo should be cautious about. Don't be pretentious.

Like an Ostrich, you hide from the things you can't handle. In this case, it's the truth.

I'm sorry but you'd have to be a complete fucking moron to buy a new Nintendo Switch 2 expecting that you're going to be able to mod your games and unlock framerates and change in-depth technical settings.

It's incredible how fragile some people are. Anytime anyone mentions even somewhat critical opinions about their beloved console, they seem to take it like a personal afront, and go to absolutely ridiculous lengths to try to discredit them and their opinions.

Not gonna lie, you got me there. Talk shit bout PC round me and a whole lotta furniture gone be moving up in this bitch.

All this about OLED displays.

The issue is that OLEDs with VRR are harder to make and therefore more expensive. This is due how OLEDs control brightness (with PWM).

Compound that with 7-8" displays being somewhat uncommon, and you end up with a very expensive display.

In fact, I don't think any OLED has no or negated issues with VRR without increasing power draw significantly. That's obviously not good in a handheld.

The Steam Deck OLED doesn't have VRR.

I'm not PC gamer so moding and all that crap dont matter to me. I bought Switch 2 because it has games I wan to play.

Steam Deck mostly going play games I can already play on PS5, for me this system absolutely useless.

There's always a bitter moron entering a Steamdeck thread and whining that people are talking about their Steamdeck, somehow.

Correct, I don't think that, but if you are going to be in the market, know your fucking market. Which I assume they do, and as it turns out, their market has a bunch of suckers. But also, when it comes to handhelds and settings SteamOS (Linux Arch) and Windows PC both allow you to change the settings in the games without mods. Now if you want to play as Mario in GTA V, then that's where mods come in. But the other advantage is the tens of thousands of other Windows games you can play on a PC handheld as opposed to just games published for Nintendo. Not only that, but when Steam Deck 2 comes out, ALL of those games get visual upgrades, not just the upgrades Nintendo makes you pay for.

But there is far more value in buying a Steam Deck than a Switch 2. If you're looking for them $80 exclusives or them $10 - $20 visual upgrades on the other hand, then Switch 2 is your jam. But always remember, they are bending you over.

Switch 2 sucks ass because its launch line up sucks ass. If it had anything on it that I wanted to play I'd have got it at launch *cough* Zelda *cough*.

Steam Deck OLED is amazing. Haters, be gone.

As far a OLED VRR goes, there are already variable refresh rate OLED phones going to 120hz, so the technology exist at smaller levels. Oleds do use more power than LCD. Thats another reason why it probably didnt launch, sw2 life is already low. The OLED Switch 2 if there probably is one eventually would probably have a revised chipset as the OLED SW1 did. But you are right to bring up the power draw point, I don't know how well that would work with the system in portable mode usage time. Honestly, hadn't even really thought about that side of it for the sw2 much until now knowing how fast the battery drains as is in portable mode.

Absolutely. I'm a sucker for Mario and Zelda also. But I usually wait for discounted hardware and buy games off second hand marketplaces which Nintendo eliminated with their anti-consumer bullshit key cards. The other shitty thing is, Nintendo RARELY discounts their games. So fuck that.

GameBoy Advance had a backlight and improved color palette on GB and GBC titles.
Ah, so they run the same? What I said then.
PS2 could optionally cut loading in half and improve textures on PS1 games.
Ah, so they run the same? What I said then.
A modded Wii could force GameCube games to run in crisp 480p instead of blurry 480i. (It could even cut loading in half if the games were backed up to a hard drive or SD card.)
What about the original Wii with no mods? Ah they run the same. What I said then.
PS3 upscaled PS2 games and had options for screen aspect ratio.
Ah, so they run the same? What I said then.
PS4 doesn't have any backwards compatibility with PS3 games.
That's why I kept my PS3.

Mario Kart world slaps though. I mean, it's really good. But after a while I do need to put it down and play a less color saturated PC game to get my manhood back. :messenger_downcast_sweat:

Again, you're just going back to comparing the age-old difference between consoles and PCs, which I pointed out in post #4 in this thread.

Not just Zelda and Mario but also Xenoblade, Astral Chain, Fire Emblem and 3rd party exclusives like Bravely series.

For me it's very simple, Nintendo makes the games I like I'm willing to buy it.

Can Nintendo be greedy company at times? Absolutely but unlike Sony they haven't stopped making games I enjoy…..to me that's way worse than increase game prices or Key card crap.

After my couple weeks, I'm glad I have both! lol they both serve different functions for me. That said I really hope steam deck 2 is announced soon. Running recent games decently has been a no go.

After playing Switch 2 for a week it made me realize how great the Steam Deck is.

On the hardware side, the OLED screen Steam Deck pummels the Switch 2. I remember hearing in previews that the Switch 2 screen was great but I strongly disagree with that due to noticeable ghosting and washed out picture. I like the concept of Joy Cons (the way they attach magnetically is awesome), but they are still uncomfortable to use and the lack of dpad makes some games unplayable IMO. I refuse to use the analog stick for 2D games like a filthy casual. The Steam Deck is just so much more comfortable to hold.

On the software side its usual woes of console gaming. Yes, the Switch has an amazing catalog of games. Unfortunately many of them are handicapped with crappy settings that require a developer to update. That means we're left to beg online and wonder if/when a patch will come for these games. All so they don't look like ass.

Take Dave the Diver for example, great game... locked at 30fps until the dev updates it. People are left to beg for a patch. Now do that with the majority of your Switch library. Disgusting.

I dunno man. I won't call it buyers remorse but I'm feeling a little unenthused. Anyone with me?

Only person triggered here is you, by other people using a function that doesn't factor you into the equation at all. In a funny way, you're just as sensitive as the people you are calling out for being sensitive lol.

Yeah man, you're right. Ignoring people for different opinions isn't fragile and weak at all, it's uh....it's really just brave and strong!

Truth is Kacho Kacho is my boy, and ignoring one of the consistently best posters on the site for a difference of opinion is just fragile and pathetic, full stop. But hey bro, if that's your thing too, I get it brethren, look the world is scary out there ya know?

No judgement here, it's all jokes.....lol.

I had a Steam Deck OLED for a bit, but ended up selling it. I feel like the power just wasn't quite there for what I wanted to do with it. If the next model comes with a 1080p 120hz VRR OLED screen and is at least 3x ~ 4x as powerful as the first iteration, I think it will be a really special device.

So you're just illustrating the difference between playing on a console (convenience, 1st party game libary, ease of use) vs PC (customization, tweaking, modding).

Not exactly groundbreaking stuff.

Plus............how many people have a Switch 2, Steam Deck, and gaming laptop. For Christ sake, LEARN TO SAVE SOME MONEY!!!

For real lol. This site is crazy obsessed with the pissing matches between devices lol. I have been loving my Switch 2 for the last week, but if someone prefers to use their deck, more power to them. It's not like one invalidates the other.
To be fair, OP is one of the more level-headed folks on GAF, and his points are totally valid. It's just a shame that other people use threads like this as a jumping off point to try and trash the other platform, instead of using it as a way to actually discuss the original points. (Though it also might be bait, I'm not sure lol.)

Like, as a new Switch 2 owner, I completely agree that there's a lack of content to truly explore. Furthermore, I would love for a ton of games to be updated with 60fps patches. Playing Dave the Diver at 30 on a Switch 2 just feels wrong.

But also, it's early days, and most indie devs haven't even gotten dev kits yet. I absolutely expect that we'll start seeing a consistent rollout of patched games at 60fps over the next few months.

Either way, I love both the Switch 2 and the Steam Deck OLED. I feel fortunate enough to be able to afford basically all platforms that come out, and so I tend to root for everyone.

Well, I guess keep enjoying your indie library running at medium settings. And please, complaining about waiting for devs to patch Switch games while praising the Deck is bad comedy. Oh, and us real ones only use DDR pads for 2D games.
