One thing I love about the series, that many don't consider, Ward was the first character in the show that we were introduced to, before Coulson's "reveal" even when Maria Hill was interviewing him.

The fact that he turned out to be the villain still remains a twist I love because of that. We started not with the hero, but the villain.
