Aksys is teasing something

VLR fixes 999's poor structure and was much better paced, but it also felt really uninspired and derivative with how Uchikoshi recycled a ton of his old ideas.

they could make it a pure VN and i'll be happy. i want closure too.

Yeah, I'd honestly take an equivalent of the iOS version of 999. Would love to see how it all ends. Although, if they put the resources in, like people have pointed out, this series actually would do well transitioning as a mobile game. Regardless, I'd be all for it.

as long as we're talking about VLR (spoilerz)

I gotta say i honestly didn't enjoy it. I adored 999 outside of the true ending and i was super addicted to it, but going from that to VLR felt very strange. The setting felt less sinister, the characters weren't as interesting outside of Clover and that's honestly just my pro Clover bias talking, and the ending was just this weird incomprehensible mess. I threw my hands up when they showed me the stupid timeline flowchart and tried to act like it made any sense, i'm excited for ZE3 because i'd like to see how this all ends, but VLR to me is just not good at all
(please don't hurt me)

that doesn't explain why DR 1 did well, not to mention 1 or 2 scenes doesn't = an entire franchise being popular, Uchikoshi's stuff just flat out doesn't sell

It's waaaay more than one or two scenes.

It's a button they hit purposely and with vigor. There's no denying that it's done for sales reasons.

Did the Infinity series also do poorly in Japan? He at least got to make a trilogy there, so I would think it did better than Zero Escape.

You stated what I felt but in a less confrontational way. I think VLR is crap, but I'm waiting for the third game to see how everything will work out.

VLR is uninspired, reuses plot twists, has a few badly designed characters, but I cannot help loving it.

Yep. Still fucking awesome. And reused twists or not, most of them did surprise me, although it was partially because I was actively trying not to figure out the twists beforehand lol.

For fun I was searching around how to type Greek letters (but I cant do it).
The Greek letter Sigma corresponds to S in English, but I found that Phi is

Just watching the eclipse on TV - its talking about legends used to explain eclipses and keeps using the phrase "eating the sun", "that golden sun being eaten by the moon" etc, reminds me of something...

On my first playthrough of 999, I got the 'Knife' ending. Sets the whole thing as a perfect 'And Then There Were None' type of mystery. I was disappointed by the subsequent endings but nonetheless I adored the game.

VLR, while good, never felt quite sinister to me.

Well, disregarding Kodaka stating that a big reason why he added the blatant fanservice scenes in Danganronpa 2 for Mikan was for the sake of parody (which doesn't necessarily make it right, mind you), they attempted to further the fanservice going from 999 to VLR purely for the sake of sales (as well as toning down its sinister mood because it was too "scary" for the Japanese audience), and that had the exact opposite affect than intended.

Danganronpa 1 sold much better than 999 and VLR, and that game did not lean nearly as heavily on fanservice as its sequel. It's just a game that is more aesthetically and, potentially, conceptually appealing to its target audience.

My opinion exactly. But I think it's mainly because I was looking too hard for connections with 999 characters that I felt disconnected with the story of VLR. It still had some very good moments, like the Luna ending. But overall, I think the 3D animations and the complete lack of tension made it a 6/10 in my book, where 999 is a perfect 10/10.

I couldn't get into danganrompa.

The characters were so 1dimensional. Couldn't even go through a lets-play

Yep.

Most of the characters are about as deep as a puddle of water....talking to a lot of them in School+Island Mode was torture at times. I've been re-playing Virtue's Last Reward recently and it's like night and day. Looking back at it playing Danganronpa 1 and 2 was like eating McDonalds while playing 999 and VLR was like eating at a five star restaurant in comparison.

Uninspired?

I totally agree with you. VLR felt rather flat compared to 999 because there there was no feeling of impending danger and you'd likely go an incredibly long time before hitting the end of a route. The ending
was a complete clusterfuck as well, 2 hours of incomprehensible info dump mostly delivered by a character that had gone from being one of the best to the absolute worst. Having to sit through that bullshit after Luna's incredible ending was just painful.

what on earth has this thread turned into i'm just trying to get my hopes up for ZE3 here

Seriously. I asked why VLR didn't sell, and we got...HERE. I was just looking for speculation on the JP audience.

You can enjoy two series at the same time, folks. Both deliver delicious white-knuckled suspense.

Just asking but have you tried to look the askys web(the normal one not infinity4) and see if there is any folder or something interesting on it?

If we're talking 999 vs VLR, throw me in with the VLR lot. It was a very different tone from 999 but that didn't make it any worse, imo. The ending blew my mind so many times but was actually not all that hard to follow. The way it tied everything together was just great.

I guess it helps I've never played any of his other works? I'm seeing people say he reused twists so I'm completely unaffected.

Danganronpa is an otaku game that sold primarily to an otaku audience in Japan. The Zero Escape games don't share that aesthetic, and so were less popular in Japan. Outside of Japan, both series appeal to similar audiences, so we wouldn't see as much of a gap.

In a way, I suspect that the Zero Escape creators don't really understand otaku audiences at all and so they misinterpreted Clover's popularity in 999. I imagine that they tried to tailor her in VLR to appeal to her fans, but ended up screwing up her character instead.

Is that what I think it is?

I hope it's what I would like, I asked some time ago about if they will bring zero escape 3 as they did with vlr and they asked me this: "just know if we can make it happen it will ;)". And now I have asked if they knew something about 4infinity and they have answered yes. #4thehype.

Seems like i was WRONG...
