Season finale was really a dream sequence thought up by Slaine to cope with the beating he was getting in Epi 8. They also brainwash him ala Manchurian Candidate. Season 2 opens up where the beating ends and Slaine is ready to fight for Mars.

I think it's telling that people prefer a protagonist that has zero character and no arc over the typical angsty shounen anime I-wish-I-was-shinjin-ikari MC. I think you guys are right, it will be more fun to root actively against the show and its characters than just enduring the boredom of season 1.
