Alex Garland is on his 7th playthrough of Elden Ring

I really like elden ring but some of the boss fights are really frustrating to me. So I usually just replay other from games instead

Garland is a good writer and I'm just happy a scriptwriter is actually playing the game they're adapting.

Looking good so far!

Can you overlevel the enemies in Elden Ring like you can in the others? I've just started it and I'm thinking I won't be taking on that first big guy on the horse until I'm a much higher level than I am now.

Yes, Tree Sentinel is there to teach you that you don't need to try to defeat every enemy you come across right away. You'll get stronger.

Those NPC guys you summon for Radahn are fucking useless.

Edit: I was thinking about promised consort Radahn. The original one was easy with summons.

It's really not as replayable as souls games. It's too big with too much filler dungeons.
Ah yes, Elden Ring has 'too much content.'

What a tragedy. Imagine a game giving you hundreds of hours of exploration, lore, and build variety, disgusting, right?

I'll never understand the constant complaints about games being "too big." Like… you bought the game because it looked fun, right? Now suddenly it's a problem that it lasts?

Not every dungeon hits the same, sure, but the sheer variety in builds, paths, and outcomes makes it one of the most replayable games out there.

If anything, it gives players the freedom to choose what they want to engage with. That's a strength, not a flaw

Wait...I get it that he's not familiar with gamer lingo, but he sounded like he's NG+7 and not just random 7 playthroughs on 7 different profiles/save files.

Always great to see directors knowing source material before the live action adaptation of games.

That's promising, breath of fresh air from the usual sperging: "i don't play games" / "we have our own vision" / "we want to bring something new to the table"

Writer/Director of Dredd, Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War, and Warfare.
Dredd is great, i like that movie a lot. The rest is average at best and not interesting to me at all.
Video game movie adaptations have been ridiculously bad, i maybe only like Silent Hill (2006).

If they're smart, they would just narrow the scope and focus on the story leading to the night of the black knives, when the assassins murder Godwyn. That event triggers Elden Ring story

It has to be something like this. No way you can fit everything into a 2 hour movie. Gotta do it in chunks.

I think there's a lot of freedom here to explore the concept as long as it has an authentic feel to it, since Elden Ring's story is more about worldbuilding than narrative.

Garland has demonstrated that he extends care and respect to nerdy source material adaptations (Dredd) and authenticity to his projects (Ex Machina, Warfare, etc.).

I'll never understand the constant complaints about games being "too big." .... That's a strength, not a flaw
There is not much to understand beside: Not everyone is you. So just accept that some people might dislike the very thing you believe is a great feature.

7th playthrough is pretty hardcore levels of obsession whether those are NG+ runs or entirely new saves. My initial playthrough took 200+ hours. He must know where everything is in the game without even thinking about it.

Cool, thanks for the philosophical breakthrough. We can shut the whole forum down now, no more discussion needed, folks, everyone just has different opinions. Pack it up

But seriously, if someone says a game is worse because it has too much content, in a genre built on replayability and exploration, I think it's fair to push back. Saying 'not everyone is you' isn't a mic drop, it's just dodging the actual conversation

Even though it is older, 28 Days Later is his best script, imo. And is surely the most applicable to game like Elden Ring. A guy roaming around an apocalyptic wasteland trying to survive. Best Zombie movie ever, and it's not close

He also wrote 28 years Later, which comes out this week. Curious on the reception of that

The whole thing should be based around those pots - especially their village, the castles and that dude who rips his arm off.

Sounds like an equivalent of "method directing"? Like, really engrossing and immersing yourself in the source material to find the right feel for it.

Nevertheless, I have to pay respect to Garland's commitment. He also seems to embrace the "git gud" mentality. Ninja dogs and neko-chans should take note.

If it's such a strength, why is Dark Souls so much better? 🤫

I really hope the movie has nothing to do with the player tarnished and focuses on before the shattering into after the shattering. Would love to see the Demi gods family dynamics. Id love to see Godwyn just be the best older brother to just get cooked by Rannis night of the black knives.

More likely he knows that lots of people seeing the interview won't be familiar with the lingo, so he's simplifying it. The game calls it ng+, he knows.

That's pretty cool. Hope it won't turn into some game of thrones type of nonsense.
Making a good movie from a game is hard, just like making a good game from a movie. They're rare.
