All of these got nominated while LEGO didn't.

Song of the Sea is from the guy who did Secret of Kells which was pretty magical. I think the only one it probably could have gone in over was Boxtrolls which I haven't heard anyone rave about so that's surprising.

Well this is a more shameful list of nominees or rather list of films not nominated than usual. Throw the entire academy.

Nobody who votes gives a fuck about the animated category.

HTTD2 will win just because however many dads sat through it with their kids.

I can see "The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" winning just for possibly being the last Ghibli film.

GKIDS would be really smart to play up that narrative, even if it's not technically true. This is the best chance they've ever had at one of their films taking the award, and they need all the help they can get.

It has no chance.

Meh. The only category I'm really upset about is directing where it looks like the Academy doesn't have a clue what they're doing anymore. Anything else it's hard for me to be upset about because it's so predictable of what the Academy will snub. No Lego Movie is a joke though.

Takahata hasn't won an Oscar yet so there is that angle too.

However again the voters seem to have such a complete disinterest in the animated category that I imagine it will boil down to which film has been literally seen the most.

We've gone from 10 BP nominees, to 9, and now 8. They should just go back to 5. :P

The current rule is 5-10. But a film has to get over a certain threshold. I think it's essentially the top 10 films that get at least 5% of the vote. It's possible something like Nightcrawler would've made the top 10, but it didn't get at least 5% or whatever the threshold is.

Kind of a crap year for animated fare to be honest. I haven't seen Boxtrolls or Song of the Sea, but Big Hero 6, Dragon 2 and Lego are all toddler-oriented, simple-minded affairs. Kaguya is all right. And I guess the insanity of the Lego Movie has its charm, but I personally don't miss it among the nominees.

Elite Squad I can't comment on as I haven't seen it, something that I will rectify asap, but what could The Raid 2 be nominated for? Certainly not Best Screenplay or Best Acting...maybe Best Directing? But I don't think the directing was anything to write home about apart from the fight scenes.

They should invent Best Stunts or Best Choreography award or something akin to that so The Raid 2 and films like it (John Wick, for example) can be nominated and win academy awards.

Best foreign film.

Shit, I knew it, I've regressed to a toddler level mindset. Too much time spent lurking on gaming side threads.

The View was talking about how the lego movie got snubbed but they started complaining about kaguya getting nominated because of course they have no idea what it is.

Lego might be, but both Dragon 2 and Big Hero 6 feature some sincere moments that doesn't really resonate with toddlers but definitely resonates with adults. BH6 specifically tugged at my heart strings.

what im trying to say is that youre a monster, jett.

I'm not saying they aren't enjoyable, but I don't think they're worth of recognition either.

BoxTrolls is far more simple minded than the Lego Movie. I feel like Lego's plot twist and the moment at the end
With the dad and the kid
were good enough to make it a step above 'toddler level' Also, it has as high of an aggregated rating as any animated movie this year so it can't be too bad.

Pretty much. The scenario could play where that film is everybody's number 2 film on the ballot, but because it didn't get any first place votes, it won't make the final cut.

lol, I watched BH6 last week and thought it was one of the more formulaic movies I've seen in recent memory, everything about it was bog standard. It did nothing for me. A very inferior effort from Disney after Wreck-it Ralph. If that makes me a monster, so be it.

I didn't like Secret of the Kells, so I'm not particularly inclined to watch Song of the Sea, and I'm totally eh on Laika, so I'm gonna go ahead and say that Kaguya deserves the win.

My wife is really pissed about the Lego movie snub, but I can't say I'm surprised by the Academy ignoring it.

I echo all the sentiments in this thread for Jake Gyllenhaal; he was amazing in Nightcrawler. Granted, I haven't seen any of the other films for the Best Actor Nominees, but it's too bad Jake didn't get a nomination.

Also, just watched Gone Girl for the second time last night to refresh my memory. Can't believe it didn't get nominations for Editing, Directing, Original Score, and Adapted Screenplay. That movie is a freaking masterpiece, in my opinion.

American Sniper is getting the full blown advertising treatment; I must have fast-forwarded through 10 commercials for it last night.

I’ll withhold judgment on the entire movie, but not getting a good vibe from the trailer and as much as I like Bradley Cooper, that southern accent he’s sporting is grates on my nerves.

If Song of the Sea (haven't seen yet but plant to soon), or Kaguya won in the animated category I'd be overjoyed. We all know it's going to Big Hero 6, though : (

Edit: Just to be clear, BH6 is a good film, I'm just so sick of Disney sweeping the Oscars every year. Other countries exist, dammit!

I guess Saoirse Ronan didn't have enough screen time in grand Budapest hotel to snag a best supporting actress nod. She was very charming in it though.

Will probably be the first time I skip the Oscars since I can remember. My only horse in the race was Nightcrawler and that was totally snubbed. I wasn't expecting much, but smfh at no Gyllenhal nomination at least.

Interstellar was most certainly NOT robbed. In fact it got nominated for Oscars it doesn't even deserve, like best Sound Mixing.

Eh i dont think interstellar deserved a direction nom but if shit like imitation game makes the cut, then i dont know who the fuck is nominating in the direction category. Id might as well throw nolan in the mix, better than the pedantic shit morten Whatever did.

For the record though, id nominate damien chazelle and fincher over nolan for direction for this year, who did fucking fantastic work over whiplash and gone girl, respectively.
