In the tradition of the recent Predator 2 and Robocop 2 threads here's another sequel that got shat on back in the day and has slowly been re-appraised. The interesting thing for me is that this was my introduction to the Alien franchise. I had seen the commercials for the Kenner action figures and got a crap load of them when I was 9 (remember when action figures were almost $5 a piece back in the day? Holy shit.) and since the commercials used some footage from Aliens I had deduced that there's movies out there. So, I bought a used copy of Alien 3 at Blockbuster, gathered all my Aliens action figures together and very soon I realized that this is not that kind of picture.
But I loved Horror movies and a couple of years later I realized that I love Nihilistic films in particular, and yes I'm a fan of Von Trier but I did not like Nymphomaniac, so it kind of makes sense as to why I like this one.
Because this was my introduction I did not form such an attachment to Hicks and Newt and I did not expect the film to be set on Earth or the Alien Planet. And I appreciated the film for what it was; a well shot, well acted, overall well done Nihilistic Sci Fi Horror film. Then I saw the Assembly Cut years later on DVD.
Assembly Cut blows the ever loving fuck out of the Theatrical Cut and is the definitive version of the film until Fincher oversees a director's cut which will probably never happen. It adds so much more to the film and is quite an experience. Possibly my favorite of the Alien Franchise. Course, I soon watched Aliens and loved it and also saw Alien when I was 9 but didn't like it was much back in the day. And yes, I watched the series backwards which is a weird thing that I often do with franchises. For the record, I enjoy the first 3 movies equally, some days I prefer one over the other, but I completely ignore Resurrection and AVP and the sequel aren't cannon.
