Alien Romulus | Rotten Watch

Just finished it.

It's a 6/10 for me. Not bad, but not good either. Just extremely predictable.

You've got a problem with your Alien film when the android is the highlight. David Jonsson saved the film.
The Michael Fassbender's android was also the highlight of Covenant as well. By intention from the Android's POV.

It should not have been a repeat in this one.

I would entrust Alvarez to direct a sequel to Event Horizon 2.

Just let him do his thing and he will come up with something really good.

Fuck, I would kill for a sequel to Event Horizon, but not from Fede.

Also it may be an unpopular opinion, but IMO, Event Horizon is a better movie than Alien Romulus.
I don't disagree with you. Event Horizon is original but is clearly inspired by the ALIEN crew. That said, the casting choice for EH was on the money.

Romulus is a culmination of set designs (and ALIEN: Isolation) and then stitches them together pretty well. Which is a challenge in it of itself. It is really fucking difficult to make an ALIEN sequel in this day and age and I respect.

But the crew is not memorable at all. I couldn't name any of them from the top of my head. There's Andy....

I agree with this line, but it's not impossible, I've said my piece with this movie, I applaud the practical approach and that's about it, the rest is at best bearable on account of seeing the Xenomorph again

The cast didn't bother me, but I agree, it isn't memorable.

I liked it a lot, yes it has problems, but not as many as Covenant.

My Ranking:
Alien = Alien 2
Romulus
Prometheus
Alien 3
Resurrection
Covenant

I hope there is another in this vein, which could be with the
survivor
of this one or the inevitable:

Nah, I still have it at;

Alien /Aliens
Prometheus / Covenant
Romulus
Alien 3
Alien Resurrection

Don't care about the haters, Pro and Cov still do it for me. Sure there's some serious retardation going on in some of the characters decision making skills, but the movie give really good lore and I love the way they tie in the Engineers and concepts of intervening with Humanity. I find it am interesting concept.

I certainly wasn't disappointed by Romulus, it was much better than Resurrection and Alien 3 in concept and expanding on the Alien lore even if 'we found derelict space station entire company somehow missed so let's take companies ship with no reasonable explanation to loot it' had me trying to figure out how that made any sense.

That ending though, was not expecting that. I loved the tie-in and it was genuinely one of the most nightmarish things to come from the franchise since the original hit the screens. It was quite something and tied well to you know what.

I'd rather see the original 2 hour cut of Event Horizon with all the hell sections intact that made the test audience sick than a sequel. Like where could they take the story?

I don't know really, it does seem that EH is a standalone type of movie, no?

But it would be possible, as long as it doesn't try to over explain or be full of quotes and similar scenes like Romulus is with the others Alien movies.

Finally seen it and it's a 6/10 movie, probably on par with the first Prometheus. I loved the visuals, but not a fan of the cast (the black kid was by far the worst) or the story in general.

It's a shame how much the facehuggers got nerfed in the first scene and failed with their first 2 attempts, or how the characters managed to evade xenomorphs so they would be able to activate zero G and attack them without worrying about the acid.
Ripley's one-liner was so bad lol, they weren't even fighting the queen.
I liked the hybrid from the finale (the one from Alien 4 was still better though ;p), but the birth and "reaching maturity" were definitely rushed.
The acid death and cocoon scene were probably the best ones.

Finally saw it. Liked it, but didn't think it was as good of the hype. Still, I think it's one of the better ones since the first two Alien movies. I'm a sucker for the franchise so I hope they continue to make more because I love the atmosphere and lore.

I think it started off very interesting. Starts at an off planet, and I'm really into the setting and feel of the movie immediately. Then the ship gave me old school Alien vibes. I love the set pieces in these movies. It was also cool to see an old friend. It was tense, it built up slowly, the stuff with the face huggers was really cool. Even tying it into Prometheus with the samples. Then it gradually started to devolve where I thought the second half of the movie was a major drop off and the last act in particular.

It just got way too out of control.

How quickly they went from one alien to dozens of aliens really killed the tense and scary nature of the movie. It's always more tense when there's one imposing threat in a movie that's lurking. They should have based the movie around that. Instead it turned into an action movie at the end. Mowing down hordes of aliens with the rifle made them feel cheap and weak. Dodging acid streams in zero gravity(c'mon), having a hybrid human/alien thing at the end. Kicking the acid pool so it burns through the ship, then it sucks the alien human thing out. They made the acid way too strong in this btw. You had it burning through entire ships in a matter of seconds. These are massive space crafts I'm sure incredibly thick built to withstand space elements and crashes, but somehow killing an alien can burn through an entire foundation of a ship in seconds. C'mon man.

Then somehow it clings on and they're dangling from a ship spiraling toward an asteroid belt and somehow Rain can keep her composure in all this and gather herself and knock it off. By the way, how it wasn't able to break through the glass on her space suit helmet is beyond me, it hit it like 2 or 3 times.

Overall I still enjoyed it, but those are the issues I had with it. I hope they still continue to make more and it actually made me realize how badly I want an open world Alien game where you can explore various locations and planets. If done well, it could be so good.

And Cailee Spaeny can act. She was good in Civil War, she has a bright future.

Such a tedious exercise in lack of imagination. Any good ideas the movie has are ruined by its inability to create anything resembling an original or compelling story. In a better movie, things like the zero gravity acid blood sequence, the directional rifle, the human genetic manipulation, the way synthetics behave and are programmed… all these things would land a lot better in a film that surrounded them with a compelling narrative.

But no. It’s another evil robot (with Disney’s patented ghoulish cgi resurrection) another final girl in her underwear suiting up sequence, another hybrid end boss, another elevator, another ammo running out sequence, another abandoned facility due to the alien, another decompression climax, ‘get away from her you bitch’ ‘you have my sympathies’ …on and on and on it goes. Like regurgitated food.

It’s called Warhammer 40,000.

From Wikipedia: ''Screenwriter Philip Eisner acknowledged Warhammer 40,000 as a major inspiration for the plot.[12] In the fictional setting of Warhammer 40,000, starships travel the galaxy by passing through "the Warp", which is a parallel dimension where faster-than-light travel is possible, similar to "hyperspace" in the Star Wars setting, but also infested with daemons which are liable to infiltrate the ship and possess the crew. Many fans of Warhammer 40,000 consider Event Horizon to be an unofficial prequel to the former, when humankind discovers the Warp and learns of its dangers the hard way.''

An Event Horizon sequel in 2024/25 would be like “Somehow .. the Event Horizon returned”. Be thankful for every franchise that dodges this cursed timeline right now.

“Somehow .. the Event Horizon returned”

Thats how the first film starts though. It would have to be

“Somehow .. the Event Horizon returned.........again”

Watch it yesterday and this is pretty much my take too.
There are a few good ideas and interesting concepts but the movie wastes all of them in service of just being another uninspired modern sequel that's constantly pushing for "member berries". Once they enter the ship almost every scene boils down to either "hey remember this from the old movies?" or "Hey remember that scene you liked in the old movies? We did something similar!!!"

Overall I'd say it was still a 6/10 since despite all the flas it entertaining and visually pleasing (aside from the awkwardly de-aged Bilbo)

To be fair, some sort of warp drive tech WOULD continue to be developed, just 'cause the first......100 or so folks to try it all went mad is not reason to dismiss the technology completely ::p

The Cockatrice

I'm retarded?
Ill post my thoughts about Romulus here as well since i posted them on the 31 days of horror.

Im not sure where to put it. The goods are that whoever was in charge of the movie atmosphere and the details, they did a great job nailing the props, the sound effects, and environments just like the first movie and the game Alien Isolation. These things are super important for me and it's why I might consider it the third best Alien movie. The actors I didnt like anyone, no one memorable. Im not sold on the main chick yet, but the ending and the floating acid scenes were quite good, although the ending was clearly Ressurection all over again which everyone hated except me. Ill need to rewatch it someday to decide on it, but for now, it was pretty good.

It was an ok movie, staeted off quite strong but its being said already:
- "get away from her you bitch" or similar in this movie, not needed, original was excellent, this was lame
- acid melting through the Hull in seconds, nope, not from previous movies
- tried to be a mish mash of Alien(horror) and Aliens(All out gunning) and failed at both.
- the human thing was terrible, like some cheap horror movie.
- blatant attempt at Sigourney Weaver strong female character, but the actress wasn't this
- the "bad" android is a terrible cliche in this franchise.

It was one of the better Alien movies is recent years but that's not saying much.

This is my favorite Alien sequel. Nothing really lives up to the originality and polish of the original film but the sequels can still be great.

And yeah that means I prefer this to “Aliens”, which veers too cartoon’ish for my taste and made cannon fodder out of the xenomorphs much too quickly.

Lupin3

Targeting terrorists with a D-Pad
It was alright. But the "plot holes" where the movie broke its own rules bothered the hell out of me.

I liked the first hour, thought the British guys were good, that death - you know which one - was fantastic

But

It didn't need 46 unnecessary ends, I was bored to tears with the stupidity of that .

I loved Romulus. Hope we get another one. Haters can suck a dick.

Alien - GOAT
Prometheus/Covenent - Damn Good
Romulus- Fun times at the movies
Every other alien movie - Brain rot . Yes including Aliens. Aliens is a cheesy action movie only fitting its time era. It is not a timeless classic action flick either, and it isn’t a forever movie like the original Alien.

The cast looking like teenagers bothered me and took me out of the experience. I just couldn't get passed that. Was hoping for a Dead Space meets Alien Isolation vibe. A movie where the characters are constantly being stalked by these creatures and them having to make use of the environment and tools to survive. I really dislike characters just getting hold of an assault rifle and blasting their way out of danger.

Was a meh movie overall.

I just watched and it was terrible with an ending so bad it made me wince in agony. A handful of nice shots and one good combat scene. "Best in the franchise"? More like best time to stop sniffing glue. 3/10

They announced a sequel is in the works with the same lead actors.
The Android was ok, the lead bird was completely forgettable.

Jobs fucked now as Romulus just knicked the best bits from Alien and Aliens but worse. What they going to steal the best from next ? AVP Requiem ? lol.

Who survived from Romulus? The lead girl and...the android? Right? All the others got dusted IIRC. Unless some shit got left on her ship (aka the sole surviving egg from Aliens into Alien3) then not sure how the same shit can happen to the same girl twice!

But overall I'd be down for more of the same, especially if they can shrug off Scott and move away from black goo nonsense and go back to more xeno stuff. I'm unsure what direction they should take, just sticking with horror and having a group of folks have to think their way out of a xeno outbreak is still a pretty damned good foundation for a film.
