Alien Covenant Trailer Released

I can't really wrap my head around what I saw in the trailer and wouldn't mind if someone would spoil the plot to me in PM.. Because if it's what I think it is, it makes no sense.

I don't want to watch the trailer because I haven't seen the previous films. I just want to know which movie this is a sequel to. Is it Prometheus or the other Alien films and which order should I watch them in to 'get' what's happening in Covenant?

You only have to watch Prometheus.

Re-watching the trailer, this really feels like a series that is out of ideas. Another crew landing on a planet to find another one of those ships, another egg chamber, another face-hugger, another android, more women fleeing down long metal hallways, more alien stalking. This stuff stopped being scary after Aliens. That the shower scene at the end is both a horror movie trope and re-uses the tail-between-the-legs from Alien is just depressing. It's easy to forget - or not even know, if you grew up after Aliens came out - but this series used to be really scary and kinda fucked up. They're so iconic now, but the designs in Alien were incredibly....well, alien. Strange and new and unsettling.

There's NONE of that here. It's so out of ideas that they have to resort to showing a bunch of character deaths just to elicit some sort of reaction. It's just sad at this point.
100% agree with this sentiment. In fact it seems to just do the Alien->Aliens to Prometheus.

Blomkamp is never ever going to be able to make that Alien movie. That was before Chappie bombed. He has had two big budget failures in a row. Blomkamp is not going to be trusted with this. His career doing blockbusters is pretty much dead.

I remember how amazing the Prometheus trailer was, few things have gotten me more hyped.

Fool me once, Ridley Scott, fool me once... I will absolutely wait for reviews for this one.

I want to see if anyone can back me up on this:

Alien: Resurrection is a super fun (albeit dumb) action movie.

Prometheus was dumber, no doubt.

Resurrection has its cringey moments but its indeed fun, I thought the alien human hybrid was a very interesting idea that was poorly executed, Ron Perlman is always entertaining to watch anyway.

Danny McBride is in this? He actually has a serious role.

I thought this movie was gonna pick up right where Prometheus ended. Looks like this takes place years later.

So much Prometheus hate.

I guess I'm just lucky. I remember the trailers for it and I thought it looked really stupid but I also had no idea it was connected to Aliens in any way. When it hit on demand I rented it one night and was blown away. All of the hints and nods along the way had me like, "no way... Is this an Aliens movie?" When the Xenomorph, or Deacon I think it's called, appeared at the end I was marking out.

The movie wasn't perfect, sure, but boy was it fun and the cinematography was beautiful. I also adored the main theme which was just perfect. I'm super pumped for the sequel even though this looks to be much different than what I was I expecting after the ending in the first movie...so long as they keep us intrigued while answering the many questions left hanging I'll be alright. Heck, we still have two more prequel films after this!

I saw Prometheus with some friends and when we got to the cinema we had to the chance to watch that or Avengers and (being an Alien nerd) I convinced everyone to see Prometheus. I spent the rest of the day apologising. This film looks like more of the same.

Ridley Scott was going to produce it though, so if Covenant does well and Ridley is still on-board with the idea, plus Sigourney Weaver has said she is interested in doing the movie, then there's a good chance it could still be made.

Are they really planning to drag this out for 2 more sequels after Covenant? How? This trailer shows they are out of ideas.

I guess if Avatar can do it so can Promaliens. :/

I was so pumped for Prometheus I went to the midnight premiere. Never before have I had such a sickening feeling of disappointment that only continued mounting through the film until about a third of the way through when I just accepted that this was going to be an irredeemably bad film.

Never gone to a midnight premiere since.

I'm still not sure I understand why people hated Prometheus. The characters doing dumb things seemed like a minor nitpick to me that without the HonestTrailers video going viral, most wouldn't have noticed those moments. The film was a box office success, reviewed well and scored well within audiences, it's really just the vocal few controlling the conversation. Scott making more of Prometheus just makes sense, considering it was the most financially successful Alien film ever and reception was fairly positive.

But to me, this looks way more Alien than Prometheus

I had problems with Prometheus, but it wasn't the worst film ever, I guess I just wanted more "It's going to lead into Alien" than it ended up giving. But that's equal parts my fault and Scott's fault for not knowing when to shut up in the press. I didn't want it to necessarily be an Alien film, just tie things together better than it did.

That being said, my issue with this trailer is not that it's 'more Prometheus', it's that it feels like designed by committee, a committee who thought Promethus' failings had to do with it not being scary enough, instead of other script issues. I'm still going to give it a chance, but maybe not in theaters

Genuine question: for people saying this trailer shows no new ideas...what did you want a minute plus, edited trailer to show?

Some people are writing off the movie already, which in my opinion is an overreaction (just like declaring a film awesome based on a trailer would be)

Now I just want Blomkamp to do his Alien film so some people here get annoyed.

I will check this as soon as it hits theaters. Not too excited after reading spoilers and seeong trailer but I'm sure I'm gonna enjoy it nevertheless. Though I really really liked Alien 3 too.

While I'm personally excited for this flick I'll admit that was a bad trailer. It really did nothing to intrigue the viewer other than show a quick shot of David, which is a bit disappointing considering how many questions have been left lingering. Maybe it's a good thing though since trailers often show too much these days.

Blom's movie in every sense will be Alien 5 which if we're counting this as an "Alien" movie within the official canon I would imagine it is still pre-Alien. The problem I have with it tho is that the look and feel of the ships of which there is of course "Well, you have a mining freighter vs. science boat..." argument but that still is thin on substance IMO.

I still can't believe they'd show a backburster scene in the trailer. I think something like that would be surprising to see for the audience whom are probably expecting something from the chest?

Really the Xenos being a biological weapon created by humanity's dark forerunner's and not an abomination of nature is kinda stupid.

Is it possible that there are Good Engineers and Bad Engineers on this planet? The ones we saw at the beginning of Prometheus were the Angels and the ones on the military installation were evil ?

I think it looks pretty badass. Glad Scott is bridging the Prometheus character David to the origin of the xeno evolution since he's the most interesting aspect of that movie. Hyped as fuck.

What? Next time you complain about a buggy game I will ask yout to go through the code and point put what the problems are and what is to do.

Oh you were being serious? I thought you were kidding.

Sorry the trailer didn't sell you on the movie. I enjoyed it and don't know what else to say, other than its a trailer and trailers are often not at all indicative of what the final film will be like.

Sounds like you're hedging your bets. I'll watch but I'm not expecting anymore than a rehash of Alien.

Dude, why do you always get so unnecessarily aggressive? I see you in so many threads getting needlessly hostile about something.

I agree with this. The sad thing is, there are interesting stories to tell in the Aliens universe, but they've kept retreading their own well worn ground instead.

I felt like Prometheus was a (flawed) attempt to change direction, and a return to what made Alien 'Alien' is exactly what this franchise needs, even if it means redoing ideas. It worked for TFA, and to a smaller scale I think it could work here.

People reading alot from the first trailer to a movie.
First people complain about trailers giving away too much, now when they don't people complain that there is nothing new and nothing there.
I think people just like hating and shitting on things.

OK, so I watched the trailer again. Honestly, it tells me really nothing about the quality of the film, as is kind of usual these days. It was a perfectly passable "this is a horror movie with Aliens in it" trailer. Good or bad, it's hard to know. The visual design looks really good, as per usual with Ridley. I very much hope the story holds up. It's unclear how large of a role David has in this one or if Noomi is even in it (is she?).

The Prometheus trailer was something else. Dark, mysterious, foreboding, etc. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess they didn't want to set people up for disappointment this time around and just did a straight sci-fi horror kind of trailer.

Anyway, hoping this pans out.

I really don't agree that there's nothing new or interesting to be made inside the alien universe. Just that this is not the way to do it, at least from what we saw in this trailer.

I was really pumped for this film. If it's good, they made a terrible first look trailer.

This read presumes that they know the thing they're trying to sell is disappointing, though, so instead of making it better, they're just gonna sling it as-is.

It's definitely a weird position to be in for the marketing. Might have been why they opted not to do their own thing and instead apply "somber dirge-y pop-song trailer template" to it.

I hate your post more than the trailer

Tangentially related: but I feel silly for never noticing before that the Space Jockey telescope (or whatever) is a giant cock'n'balls. I guess everything in this universe is either a peen or a vajayjay.

Well of course we like hating and shitting on things, everyone does.

But it's so much easier when the thing in question is actually shitty, like this trailer.

Even if you're hyped for this film, the trailer was really badly edited, and if you needed convincing that this isn't just the exact same story as Alien/Promethus all over again this trailer also failed to do that too.
