Aliens: Colonial Marines demo vs. final build

This was a vertical slice. The same thing will happen to Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us, where it won't be as staged as cinematic as the E3 demos.

Whoa, that's on the official website, now that is false advertising.

If you're holding on to Wii-U hope, the PC version looks like utter shit too, PC's with 16GB of ram and all the bells/whistles can't make this game look good.

Why would the Wii-U version have completely different assets and look better when compared to much better hardware?

Watch the video that DieH@rd just posted. The examples that you gave are games that were primarily shown without setpieces. So obviously AI might not work exactly the same as in those demos. In this game they completely removed sequences from the game that were in the demo. The sequences that people actually praised when they saw the demo. So it's not a situation where the game is just being played differently.

This seems to deserve its own thread

That lighting in the game is terrible at this point. THE DEMO WAS FUCKING AWESOME! I COULDN'T SEE THE END OF THE CORRIDOR AND THE ALIENS CAME OUT AND I COULDN'T SEE THEM AND I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE THIS SHIT.

Sorry guys... I was fuckin' hyped for this one. :( at least I didn't buy it though...

According to the Kotaku article, TimeGate threw out all of Gearbox's assets (which is nuts), perhaps Demiurge (who is independently handling the Wii U version) still used all the original assets.

One things for sure, this whole story is getting crazier by the minute.

This whole thing is without precedent. I could see the console versions being shittier than initially shown, but the PC version just boggles the mind.

I don't care the extent of Gearbox's involvement - it's their fucking name on the product, they're on the line. I'm sure they'll lash out at consumers at some point, somehow blaming us.

To top it all off, by all accounts the game's selling quite well, or so it initially seems - hopefully it just gets destroyed by word of mouth.

Wow this was such a drastic difference. I wonder what happened really. Sega and Gearbox should explain this in detail if they respect their costumers.

Gearbox really is hit or mix and insists on not being a trustworthy development studio (Duke Nukem, and now this).

A vertical slice doesn't usually look better than the final product. The differences in scripting, item placement, little superfluous details, those I get, but everything else, holy shit.

The Jim Sterling video is now in the OP. I'd suggest that everyone watch that. It's even more damning than the original video. The overwhelming majority of what was shown in that demo simply doesn't exist in the final game.

seems like this happens a few times..

sometimes it looks like alpha/beta versions of a game in some ways look better than the final product.

I don't follow gaming press much these days... especially after the entire industry basically rolled over on PS3 Skyrim (save very few exceptions) but that video piece by Jim Sterling was much welcomed. No bullshit or PR-feeling spin. Just calling them out, finally.

Gearbox has been pulling this shit for too long, they and other devs like them deserve to take the hit for it... I hope this kind of coverage becomes a thing.

Alpha looking better than the final game has become pretty common these days. It's just that the difference is usually more subtle, like BF3.

Here it might as well be a different game.

Has the video of the guy playing a level in "Pacifist mode" been posted yet?

He basically just runs through a level without shooting his gun, quite appalling really :|

Pitchford is the biggest bullshit artist in the gaming industry imo. He makes Molyneux seem like a very honest and forthright guy.

This is true.

The guy's a joke. The shit he pulled with the bullshit story about how he played and beat Gabe Newell at poker to win the right t use the name 'Gearbox' still cracks me up. Valve came out and said that when they didn't even meet until after Half Life had shipped and Pitchford came out on damage control saying he hoped everybody enjoyed his 'tall tale'. Fucking prat.

OK....no longer holding at hope for a Wii U version....

Jason Schreier replied in his own article on Kotaku:

We heard from a tipster about a month ago that the Wii U version had been "postponed indefinitely." We reached out to Sega, and they denied it. I'll let you guys fill in the blanks there. :)

:/

could be taken either way though, postponed indefinitely....... so it doesnt show up the other versions?

not holding out any hope though

What was removed/changed in BF3 that looked better than the retail release?

From talking to developers using UE3 near the end of this generation, I'd guess that gearbox just collided with RAM limitations. Animation rigging like the original demo takes a fair amount of RAM. That lighting model is incredibly memory-hungry. And I've heard since last year that they couldn't get the alien AI working correctly, in that they didn't know how to get the aliens to navigate the environment believably.

Why the hell not leave those effects and lightning model in for the PC as "very high" settings or something. Crysis 3, Dragon Age 2 (DX11) and Skyrim look like vastly diff games on PC.
I guess money is the answer but still. UE3 can look that good!

The sad truth is Gearbox will get away with this and most of guys here will probably will say 'hail gearbox' when they announce next borderland.

I'm out. Fuck you gearbox. I won't buy your shit anymore.

Hm, I assumed they were going to release it after all the bad word of mouth came out and then blame some other factor.

But I guess they're just going to straight up cancel it.

Meh... I get what you're saying but Borderlands 2 was pure gold. I'd take a third game happily.

I suppose that makes me part of the problem.

I really wish I could be in on a meeting between Sega and Gearbox right now.

Gearbox:

Pecan was supposed to hit beta, but GBX instead came to an agreement with SEGA that they would push the release date back one more time, buying GBX around 9 mos extension.
About 5 of those 9 months went to shipping BL2. In that time, TimeGate managed to scrap together 85% of the campaign, but once Borderlands 2 shipped and GBX turned its attention to Pecan, it became pretty apparent that what had been made was in a pretty horrid state. Campaign didn't make much sense, the boss fights weren't implemented, PS3 was way over memory, etcetcetc.

asking for an extension wasn't an option, and so Pecan crash-landed through certification and shipping. Features that were planned were oversimplified, or shoved in (a good example of this are challenges, which are in an incredibly illogical order). Issues that didn't cause 100% blockers were generally ignored, with the exception of absolutely horrible problems.

Angry Joe supported that game so much, he must be destroyed it turned out like this.

And pissed as fuck.

i was very dissapointed with BL2 the side quests n how they worked was filthy compared to the first. and alot of balance just didnt exist between the classes

At this point SEGA is just hoping the brand can push it to decent sales. I'm sure it'll do that.

But like many have said, we could've gotten Obsidian's Aliens action/RPG game if it weren't for this. :(

Yes, he was. He's liking the Multiplayer, but he's beyond upset about the everything else. It'll be up tonight.

I didn't get the same feeling from two that I got from 1. It just felt so boring and repetitive to me and the 'humour' forced and meme based, was the final nail in the coffin for me.

The video with Jim Sterling doesnt have any nest footage we see on the other video comparing both demo and final versions. Where can i see that full footage?

These target renders being passed off as gameplay aren't anything new, unfortunately. Far Cry 3 had a similar instance.
