Any good, free alternatives to Microsoft Word? Or a place for a free download of it? If it''s a free download of microsoft word, PM me, posting it might get you banned.

But a compatible free program that can be opened by Microsoft Word without reformatting everything. Does it exist?

dem recommended the two that immediately come to mind.

Realize that the issue is not going from some program INTO MS Word...the issue is going from MS Word to other programs. Word should be able to import standard formats (ASCII, HTML, RTF) without much of a problem, but going from the Word-proprietary format through the provided converters often leaves a lot to be desired.

For what's it's worth, I used OpenOffice for a while, and although it was basically compatible, I found that I was wasting a lot of time adapting to the different UI. If you're willing to put in the time to learn a new interface, then it might be perfect for you.

LaTeX is only for the die-hards, unless you are writing your thesis or doing a lot of non-standard stuff (including math or source code) it might eb too much of a hassle. It *is* really cool though :)

OpenOffice Writer is a worthy MSWord replacement.
