Am I the only one that chooses not to vote?

I look at it this way: If I don't vote, people are influencing my future without me having the chance to influence theirs. I play the game based on that principle alone.

If I'm uneducated about the candidates I'd be doing people a disservice by casting a vote. I typically stick to presidential elections after watching all the debates and doing a moderate amount of research.

You're making it seem like you're the deciding vote.

I'm lazy and I really don't care.

I'm happy I got a day off though.

Hahaha hilarity, my point is proven is it not?

I suppose I'm simply arguing that one does not forgo their right to complain about their circumstance because they did not make a choice concerning it.

You chose to Uninvolve yourself in making a choice that directly affects you. That's a choice.

By not making a choice you either endangered your circumstances or improved it, but who knows, you didn't make a choice.

I definitely voted today. Can't recall missing too many elections. Even when I was in college.

As others mentioned, you can really make a difference at the local level. In my town, we have town meetings to vote on the budgets for the town and schools and other articles such as the Community Preservation Act which allows the town to preserve open space or to fund recreational activities or provide low income housing. One of my favorite votes was for a new rail trail. That was 14 years ago and ground will break on the project next year.

I normally do vote but today I'm sick and I already know which way every vote is going to the point where even a 100 of me wouldn't change the outcome of this election. Nothing stops this train
wreck

I vote in every election., but harbor no illusions of it changing anything. Just trying to switch spots to stripes.

I used to vote pretty much never, except for in the presidential election.

However, these days I go more often, mostly for governor or senator.

If I actually feel that something is at stake, I'll get off my ass. In today's case I really had to put my vote behind the democratic senator. I really don't want the Republicans to have majority.

And when it comes to things like Question 1-4 or whatever, I've been finding that important too. Examples like medical marijuana and the expansion of the bottle deposit are those which I actually think are worth voting over.

I live in AUS and i really wish it was not mandatory to vote as you have situations which you had last election in which you didn't like either of the parties but still had to tick a box

Im guessing the people who counted the votes must of seen quite a few cock and balls drawn on the voting slips as that's all i could bring myself too

I blame south park for a large rise in "both parties are the same there's nothing we can do shit sandwich/giant douche" mentality.

Vote. There was a time when it was only available to the privileged white male land owners.

Also vote in things other than the presidential election. Local counts a hell of a lot.

Really? Your life is sooooooo busy that over the course of the last 6 months since primary were over you haven't had enough time to read about a half dozen people and their stances?

It's kind of hard to find time for certain things when you are working 40+ hours a week and struggling with depression.

I had a converstion with the mother of one of my friends about this. The local elections had come about and she casually asked me who I was voting for, and I said nobody. She was genuinely surprised, and asked me why not. I said there was nobody I wanted to vote for. We then went onto discuss about parties and people, she asked why which party I mostly agreed with. I said if it had to come down to it, probably the conservatives because I like certain old fashioned traditions like sitting down to eat a meal with your family etc. but I would never vote for them because they hate poor people too much. She said that I should vote for labour then to make sure the tories didn't win. I told her voting shouldn't work like that. Just because there's a particular party I really disagree with, doesn't mean it's rival will get my vote.

I will continue to not vote until there is a person/party who vehemently agrees with how I believe a country should be run. I keep myself informed. Tory is too discriminitory for me. Labour is too weak for me. Lib Dem is too shallow for me. BNP is too racist for me. None of the parties out there want what I want, and ones close are flaming racists/homophobes who should never be in charge lest we get Nazi party 2.0.

I think a bigger problem is that these politicians do not speak to the younger crowd. I don't think there is disinterest, it is just the fact that when young people do vote they are not satisfied with the results. Didn't a large majority of young voters vote for Obama? Because I remember that happening and then after his first term people lost interest because it seemed like he was treading water.
Politicians won't speak to that crowd if they can count on them not bothering to get involved in the process.

I voted today just to spite the Republicans. I live in an area dominated by Conservatives/Republicans and it's sad that they keep winning by maybe 2-300 votes.

You can't abstain on single line items? I do that on local issues I don't feel strongly/informed about.

I blame south park for a large rise in "both parties are the same there's nothing we can do shit sandwich/giant douche" mentality.
That mentality has been around a lot longer than South Park has.

People that complain about how their government without putting even the smallest bit of effort in engaging with said government annoy the hell out of me. If you can't bother to demonstrate a pulse to your politicians, what reason do they have to care about you?

I had little knowledge on the candidates in my state so I chose not to vote. I voted in prior elections, but decided not to make a blind vote.

I'm in the same boat as you. From my News Analysis class it sounds like voting at the state and local level is more important than for Presidency, but unfortunately I'm with ignorance as to what these candidates are doing and what they're proposing so that would be in a bad move to vote for something I don't know about.

I voted in Tennessee tonight, and I felt like I was peeing in a lake. But you know what? If other people helped pee in the lake, then maybe people would notice. Maybe we could even turn it yellow.

Everybody who doesn't vote, you guys are complicit in the shit that's going to happen tonight.

It's your fault.

I feel like I'm the only one that actually sees what's going on.

Red, blue, left, right, Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative....it doesn't matter. They're all the same. Corporations own this country and they control everything that takes place in Washington. They spend hundreds of millions of dollars to "influence" congressional opinions, and they have 3rd party organizations and lobbying groups that practically work alongside politicians to create legislation that fits their needs.

Politicians don't care about Americans...they just don't. Most of them are lavishly rich, and like most people, they care about themselves, their families, and their own self interests. I cringe every time I see one of them donning blue jeans and a buttoned down shirt while talking and shaking hands with Americans in rural areas. It's just a PR move. They're actors. They couldn't care less.

And yet, every year, Americans seem to get galvanized behind a given politician. People seem to think that once their guy gets elected, their lives will suddenly improve and everything will be wonderful. In the end, nothing changes.

It's why I just can't bring myself to vote. To go and vote is a vote of support for this entire, incredibly corrupt system. It's a vote for a person who doesn't know and doesn't care who I am. Worst of all, people are indoctrinated at a young age to go and vote because it's such a unique "right", as we have a "choice" about who we choose to put in office. Yeah, what an amazing "choice" we have. In reality, we get to choose the puppet that serves as the face for corporate America, because it's the rich corporations that are actually pulling the strings.

you're not alone, but remember this: there are people out there who wanted to vote today but got fucked over and it wasn't 'both sides' that screwed them. they may be similar in some aspects, but they are not the same.

This is what I try to do... Sadly, it hasn't worked yet, but I'll keep trying.
Yeah, it can be frustrating to vote for those that are already doomed to lose. But in terms of protest it might actually achieve something. If 20% of all people don't vote, nothing in the political landscape changes. But if those 20% would vote for a third party a lot would change.

Every year I resist the urge to put up VOTE FOR KANG and VOTE FOR KUDOS signs in my yard because even I'm not that cynical. You can at least try to choose the lesser poison once every couple years.

98% Green Party, 94% Democrats, 82% Socialist ... and 5% Conservative and Republicans. Suggested: Shenna Bellows for Senate (no idea who she is but there's a 94% match versus the next best thing, 5% GOP candidate)!

...there's a Green party!?
I'm not American, but I got similar results.

98% Green Party
97% Democrats
74% Socialist
31% Libertarians
10% Constitution Party
8% Conservative Party
2% Republicans

Its even worse than that. What the "non-voters" don't realize is that the reason that they don't have an impact or see any of their issues addressed is because they have no voice, they have no presence. If I know you aren't a factor in the election, I can give two shits what your views are because I don't have to cater to you at all. You might as well not even have a viewpoint on ANY issue because I won't care because I don't have to appease you at all.

Do you ever vote...? There are plenty of other parties/candidates you could've voted for if you really didn't like liberal or labour.

Dammit, the Democrat city council candidate in my district is losing by a percentage point to the Libertarian candidate. Local votes matter!

I made the mistake of going with my gut and voting for the nearly identical other D candidate :(

My polling place broke into applause when I voted for the first time. It's such a legitimately rare sight there.

If there's one things corrupt politicians can count on, it's the laziness of young voters.

Damn Americans and their applause.
