I can see the potential as an add-on, but like said above, I see absolutely no possibility in having this integrated. If a company wants to make a phone that can survive impacts, they just make a more durable phone, not add vaguely Rube Goldberg stuff like this.

Haha, what? You realize that for this work before your phone hits the ground, the "system" would have to deploy almost immediately after it senses an acceleration force above a certain threshold. How hard do you think it would be for a human arm to create a similar force on a tiny ass phone for a split second?
Unless of course you're talking about airbags that deploy after your phone hits the ground, which is useless and is not what's being proposed here.
