I wouldn't say that's completely true.

Yes they had Forza as their answer to GT, but what Xbox did with online multiplayer with Xbox Live and Halo/Gears did set it apart from PlayStation. Plus it had a much stronger focus on WRPGs that Sony did it in the early days.
Online was a trump card, sure, but the PS4 largely evened the playing field and that removed such an advantage. Outside of that, Microsoft has mainly chased PlayStation.

Sorry but Fable is an old dead Xbox IP and X has made it a target for wokeness. I doubt it’ll get anyone on the outside to take a peek into Microsoft’s bubble. And if it’s a true exclusive we’ll see the usual crowd try to tank it with negativity. With a timed exclusivity it could have a chance but then the woke controversy will still sink it. Plus it’ll come at a time when Xbox is truly dead unless it’s delayed til a surprisingly promising next generation.

Fable could've sold me on an Xbox, many years ago. Not by itself, but if you threw in a few other good exclusives - Starfield (had that turned out well), Avowed, Indiana Jones - that would've done it for me. With MS changing tack over the past year and seemingly porting many of its exclusives to PS, I'm not feeling that motivation anymore. I'm not expecting all of those games to migrate to PS5, but I think most of them will, eventually. And I'm fine with waiting. I'm basically a one-console guy anyhow.

Btw, I expect that MS will manage the timing of their "It's coming to Playstation" announcements more carefully in the future. With Indy, I think parading the announcement at Keighley's event backfired on them - created ill will in the fanbase, undercut a boost to Xbox brand perception, and maybe even cost them some console sales. They would've done better to keep the PS announcement for well after Indy's release on Xbox/PC.

They definitely became more similar in the PS4 era, but I disagree that Xbox always felt like it just wanted to be PlayStation.

Certainly looked that way, particularly during the 360 era. The whole point of Xbox's existence was to stop some imaginary "domination of the living room" and broaden DirectX's presence in the console space. Both of those things meant a head-to-head with PlayStation (which wasn't a problem). But, it just didn't come with enough to set it apart (again, a feat SEGA accomplished when it declared war on Nintendo). Then, mid-gen, they decided to chase the Wii's success and push Kinect from there through the early One years, proving to be a costly mistake. Afterwards, they just went back to chasing PlayStation in a spec war and never found that 360 footing which had potential.

Nintendo learned this lesson the hard, but smart, way, as a head-to-head with PlayStation usually means a total beatdown. Microsoft never got the memo and stayed course.

Both of those things meant a head-to-head with PlayStation. It just didn't come with enough to totally set it apart (again, a feat SEGA accomplished when it declared war on Nintendo).

In my view, that's why they never got beyond the fortunate success of the 360.
They wanted to compete with PS, but I felt in the early days they had their own identity that was closer to PC gaming than what Sony was doing.

I think the difference was that Sony adapted to nullify those differentiations from Xbox, in a way that Nintendo didn't really do.

You're doing a bad job of pushing this Xbox Series sales are going to pick up marching order that you , M14 & ExtendEmbraceExtinguish all of a sudden started posting about in the last few weeks lol
Oh come on don’t start that console war marching order thing with me I probably have record low console usage at this place I don’t care about any of that.

But accuse me of being an Indy fan all you want because that I am! And I just started playing it!!!!!

First impressions - Nostalgia overload! Aching face from all the smiling at how it starts 🥲🥰 This game is made by fans!! 👌

And if this can’t sell consoles at least to oldies like me then nothing can! That’s my first impression take. Assuming the console version is alright which it seems like going by DF.

I pay attention & I noticed that the new theme is "Momentum" & "Potential" basically ignoring reality to talk about fairytale endings , you might not be part of the minions but you're right on code.

Well sorry for stumbling into that then lol
tbh I’d say I’m further away from console war than I’ve ever been in my whole life at this point. PC for MS 1st party and PS5 Pro for Sony 1st party is the way 👍 (for those of us who just can’t handle fomo, the rest can go with whichever they want, at a LTTP point the platforms are merging)

Surprised we haven't heard any tid bits about bf sales. Piscatala and dring are quite.
He’s too busy finding ways to shill instead. Series must’ve done abysmal numbers. For the life of me i can’t figure out how to post the link.

Why would people buy a Switch right now when the next system will be announced shortly and very likely be backwards compatible?

Christmas gifts. Children are known not to care very much about that.

You don't give kids enough credit. My 11 year old is more anxious for the next Switch to launch than I am. So are his friends apparently. But yes, very young children obviously won't care.

If enjoying a game makes you a "shill" then aren't all of us shills? You can enjoy a game without it being related to how well a console sells.

Do all of us work for Circana and have the data right now? Don’t play dumb.

I see that I am not the only one who finds the silence regarding November sales "suspicious". Every year there was talk about Black Friday sales, there were articles, etc. This year, absolutely nothing....

It's the 9th of December & we haven't heard a word about Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales numbers from any Analyst yet.

I'm shocked more people on GAF aren't like you guys. But yall are 100% right! Where's all the Black Friday sales articles at? We are weeks removed......yet GHOST TOWN!

I guess it goes against the " Momentum " & " "Potential" keywords they have been told to push.

But don't think at least want to get "likes" and engagement on some small hints of what the Black Friday sales were like (regardless who won or lost BF)? I find it almost impossible to believe both of them are so in the pocket of Microsoft and Xbox. That almost goes against logic to me.

Back in the day we used to get Black Friday press releases from the big 3. Sadly that doesn't happen anymore

He's still a person that plays games.

When Matt talks about enjoying a Sony game, do you think that means "PS5 must have done abysmal numbers"? Or does it mean that Matt enjoyed playing that game?

It doesn't hurt it at all. Exclusives matter and third party games also matter. It's not mutually exclusive.

Circana and GSD monthly reports come later. It has nothing to do with "PlayStation domination".
We never had to wait for NPD / Cicana to get Black Friday Analyses & Reports

We do to get anything reliable, since tracking companies are the ones with the actual data.

We used to get these

Threads 1 and 3 come from Gfk, which is a video games sales tracker.

Thread 2 comes from Adobe Analytics, because that's about Black Friday in general, not just video games.

When Gfk and Circana realesse their reports, people will make threads/articles about them.

I think the reason we're not seeing any "it was the biggest week for X" posts is because this year it wasn't the biggest week for anything.

Which Sony game did he play after Black Friday?

I genuinely don't understand why you're rolling your eyes.

The principle is the same. Your theory of "Matt is tweeting about an Xbox game because Xbox Series sold abysmal" doesn't make sense.
We are talking about Black Friday, not about any other month. You’re just arguing in bad faith hence the rolling eyes.

Circana reports video games sales monthly and the November report is due next week. They don't regularly release full reports just for video game sales in Black Friday.

What we might get is a press release about the tech sector as a whole in Black Friday. They've done that before.

Matt's tweet about Indiana has nothing to do with Black Friday sales. Circana not doing a Black Friday video game report has nothing to do with the Xbox Series numbers.

Edit: which of these facts did you funny demigod demigod ?
Guess I'll ask here my question is has the ps5 won every NPD/Cicana this year?
It's won every month since May 2023 I believe.
