Amazon Studios has picked up U.S. rights to iconic Korean director Park Chan-wook’s upcoming lesbian-tinged drama “The Handmaiden.”

The deal was one of a raft of 116 territories pre-sold on the film by CJ Entertainment at this month’s European Film Market.

Inspired by British author Sarah Waters’ original novel “Fingersmith,” “Handmaiden” is Park’s first Korean-language feature as a director since 2009’s “Thirst.”

Park’s adaptation involves a young Korean female pickpocket from the slums, who is hired by a charming con man to join an elaborate scam. She becomes the personal servant of a wealthy Japanese heiress and seduces her.

If you are not living in USA, fear not

Among the other sales were deals with Phantom (Japan), Catchplay (Taiwan), Edko (HK/Macau), Dreamwest (Australia/New Zealand), Bloomsbury (Mongolia), Kurmaca (Turkey), Gutek Film (Poland), Aero Films (Czech Republic/Slovakia), Mozinet (Hungary), AMA (Greece/Cyprus), Koch Media (German-speaking Europe), The Jokers (French-speaking territories) and Swen (Latin America).

About 7 years since Thirst? Damn!
That's kind of a weird marker since he made Stoker and some shorts between Thirst and now.

I think he is an excellent technician, but his movies can leave me a little cold at times. Always ready for his next movie tho

Amazon is going in hard on films. I'm liking that a lot.

And hey, a new Park Chan-wook film is always cause for celebration.

Haven't seen Stoker yet, or any of his films past Sympathy for Lady Vengeance for that matter, so I'll try catch this one.

Did he write the script for this? Dude's a wonderful director, and has an absolute eye for visuals, but he needs to stay as far away from a pen as possible.

I can't believe it's been so long since Thirst. Stoker was so disappointing.

Young Gun Chung-hoon Chung is my bread and butter, though. Possibly my favorite cinematographer.

I would kill to watch some of the stuff in an actual cinema, but these things rarely get localized where I live (Oldboy was the exception but I was too young at the time to understand any thing back then).

You had me at that first picture :D

So is the movie done and was just being sold? When should we expect to see it?

It finished shooting in the fall, I believe. But I don't think it has a South Korean release date yet, so hard to guess on a timetable.

Are you serious? Park Chan Wook directed an adaptation of Fingersmith? Sarah Water's Fingersmith?! Now there's two things I love I never imagined would meet. Ever. Like if someone had asked me what I think the likelihood of this happening was a few minutes ago, I would have laughed and told them zero percent.

Also, lol at 'lesbian-tinged'. Fingersmith was definitely more than just 'tinged' with lesbianism, though I wouldn't put it past this movie to tone down on those aspects a little. I hope not, but yeah.

I just read the wiki on Fingersmith, and that totally sounds like a Park Chan Wook movie.
