Amazon Kindle |OT| of eInk superiority

AndyD said:
Cant do it from the kindle. You log onto the library website, select a book, check out, then it opens the amazon web page where you send it straight to the kindle. Only works over wifi, not 3G.

No file to download and transfer, it sends it directly. Although if you want you can download the azw file to the computer from the amazon page and load it manually, instead of sending directly.

Thanks, I just found it. I guess I clicked on something else on accident because I didn't see kindle at first. Shit is so awesome.

Edit: No 3G? Boooo....

Any library connected to the Overdrive network is doing it, as Overdrive is doing it. I got two books last night from Nashville public. Very easy, very cool. There are currently near 8000 books on Overdrive available in Kindle format to loan.

The only drawback is that I have not figured out a way to see when my book expires on the Kindle itself.

Is there a link on Overdrive to the libraries in the program?

Also do you need a card from a library (generally meaning going in person to get one)?

So excited about this working!

EDIT: Figured it out

SWEEETTTT!!!

EDIT: Used my old Brooklyn Public Library Card to get two Lovecrafts! Now I just need to get one for where I live now.

Finally this is that cool future I was promised by 1950s Sci-Fi and 1990s AT&T commericals

any tips on finding Japanese ebooks that work on kindle? don't mind converting to pdf or kindle format with tools if necessary. Seems like Japan has a whole bunch of its own proprietary formats like .book which aren't compatible with anything except specialist apps.

Anyone sporting 3.3 firmware yet? They seem to be going out randomly to the mobilereads users - one 3G in the UK, one 3G in the US, and a wifi KSO in the US. It installs fine over the hacks, and isn't breaking them. It looks to be unrelated to library lending.

For anyone who is interested I found the FCC paperwork for the tablet. It should be Model D01400:

and the eInk wifi only - D01100

So in addition to the Kindle Fire announcement, new eReader model as well? Sweet.

A shiny new Kindle sounds sweet, though I'll probably stick with my Kindle 3 for now.

Well this is interesting. All the focus has been on the tablet, new e-Ink kindles have sort of flown under the radar.

That's more what I'm interested in. Would be very happy with the usual improvements: a slightly revised design that's thinner and lighter with better screen and battery life.

I'm with you on all that except battery life, I can't really complain about it, I mean I read every day and still only charge once in a month. Granted I don't use wifi or anything else so maybe I'm atypical.

I don't want a tablet, I hope for a new e-ink Kindle as well, as I have never had one of those but would like to buy one, but I have been holding out for a new one instead of buying the Kindle 3.

I'm in a similar boat. Battery usually isn't a problem unless I'm using wireless or the lighted cover. Still, it's nice to dream. Heck, I was happy with the second-gen Kindle, but then the battery life darn near doubled with the third-gen (up to two weeks offline -> up to a month offline). Excited to see if they keep that going.

Amazon is set to release two new Kindle black-and-white e-ink models in addition to an aggressively-priced 7-inch tablet with a color LCD screen on Wednesday, with the company considering expanding to larger 10.1-inch and 8.9-inch tablets next year to compete with Apple's iPad.
It's odd the wifi model won't have touch. Edit: oh, it's rumored to be $99.00.

2nd Edit:

Here are the i.MX515: Applications Processor specs:
CPU Complex
800 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 CPU
32KB instruction and data caches
Unified 256KB L2 cache
NEON SIMD media accelerator
Vector floating point co-processor

Me too. Not even a part of me is interested in the tablet (I'm not even interested in the tablet I own), but I'm stoked over new eInk.

OMAP3 is really disappointing for a device shipping in late 2011.
That's not even good for an early 2011 device, is it? The Nook Color has a OMAP3621 at 800Mhz and that launched at the end of 2010.

Same! And despite my earlier statements about sticking with my Kindle 3, the new touch model might tempt me...depending on the price.

Wish they were putting touch on the wi-fi model, though. Don't really have a need for 3G personally.

Yeah it's cool but still won't make me upgrade. I like seeing where they're going with them but honestly I can't see myself getting a replacement eInk device for years (barring the current one breaking)

3.3, really? I'm still on 3.1 here. 3G non-SO. Can't seem to find any info on it...

Check out this link:

It seems to imply that Amazon Prime will give you access to certain books...or something? That idea sounds amazing. This, combined with lending from libraries, combined with lending with friends is just going to be incredible.

Searching around, 3.3 appears to be mainly for enabling local offers on SO Kindles.

I'm definitely excited for the touch screen model. Kind of hoping my lighted case still works with it. I don't really want to buy another of them.

I'm excited to hear about a new eInk model.

Does this use a newer eInk technology than what's in the current Kindles, or is the improvement elsewhere?

Seems unlikely. There is a newer e-ink version called Triton, but that's the color e-ink, and Amazon has stated a few times this year that they don't consider color e-ink to be at an acceptable quality yet.

The best b&w e-ink is Pearl - same tech already in Kindle 3 / Nook Touch.

Hope the pricing on the touch version is reasonable. I can't believe the Kindle DX is still almost $400.
I doubt it'd be more expensive than the Nook Touch which is 139. If anything they'd probably want to make it cheaper.

No word on the time of the conference is there?

I suppose they do need a touch-based e-ink device just to check that box as matching B&N's offerings, but personally it's not a style of e-reader device I'm very interested in getting. Color e-ink in the Kindle3 housing would be great, but that's not happening, so I think the interesting developments will be the tablet, but I doubt we'll get any hard facts about the roadmap for that come next year - since they'll be wanting to sell the product they're about to release.

Is that a typo? It says that the 7" tablet is both e-ink and LCD?
I didn't even notice that, and I think it says "LGD", so I'm guessing typo or poor translation.

Unless they pull some back-lit magic out of their hats I'm probably sticking with my 3, so I'll be sticking with my 3.

I got it from here: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=150585 I don't know what Amazon is doing. They have had us on three different upgrade tracts (is that a thing, upgrade tracts?) one for pre-SO kindles, one for SO Kindles, and one for post-SO non-SO Kindles. Maybe this is their way of getting us all on the same firmware.

In July the E ink corporation patented a stylus touch eInk screen, and at the same time Amazon obtaind the domains Kindlescribe.com and Kindlescribes.com, so that my be something. They also had some new color patents in January, but I really doubt we will see it this year.

Maybe if there is a Wifi-only version of that model. Otherwise, I would expect it to be more. The 3G Kindle 3 (non-ad supported) is $50 more than that.

This right here still annoys the hell out of me. If there were any e-reader I wanted it would be the kindle dx. It is still priced way too high. Hope they say they are lowing the price today.
