Amazon orders Channing Tatum-JGL English-dubbed Romanian cop show spoof. [trailer up]

Can we all just take a minute and just admire what Amazon just agreed to launch?
he Dark Knight Rises star has boarded Tatum's Romanian cop show spoof Comrade Detective, which has landed at Amazon for an Aug. 4 premiere.

Formerly titled Iron Fisted, Comrade Detective is described as follows: "In the thick of 1980's Cold War hysteria, the Romanian government created the country's most popular and longest-running series, Comrade Detective, a sleek and gritty police show that not only entertained its citizens but also promoted Communist ideals and inspired a deep nationalism. The action-packed and blood-soaked first season finds Detectives Gregor Anghel and Iosef Baciu investigating the murder of fellow officer Nikita Ionesco and, in the process, unraveling a subversive plot to destroy their country that is fueled by — what else — but the greatest enemy: Capitalism."

According to the series description, the show "was sadly forgotten about after the fall of the Berlin Wall," but has now been rediscovered and remastered with the help of Tatum and Gordon-Levitt. Comrade Detective is further described as "a true portal into a time and place and a powerful reminder of what art can be — and it is now ready to be seen by the modern world on a larger scale than ever before."
Subsequently, the cop spoof will be presented in Romanian with Romanian actors Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici in the lead roles — and dubbed in English as a Romanian show of that time would have been. The actors will be dubbed over with the voices of Tatum and Gordon-Levitt as the lead characters.

The vocal cast will also include Jenny Slate, Chloë Sevigny, Jake Johnson, Jason Mantzoukas, Nick Offerman, Fred Armisen, Oscar winner Kim Basinger, recent Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, Tracey Letts, Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale, Richard Jenkins, Debra Winger, Mark Duplass, Katie Aselton Duplass, Jerrod Carmichael, Bo Burnham and John Early.
Thank you, Peak TV, for letting such an absolutely crazy idea exist in our world today.

If they absolutely get this right it could be huge..., if not it'll be a joke that runs out of steam within five minutes of the first episode.

Just saw the trailer. Looks hilarious! This has remnants of Garth Meringhi's Darkplace and Kung Pow all over it. Day 1 for me.

But Kung Pow came from a a place of love, and Darkplace was self-deprecating. This just comes across as laughing at 'silly foreigners' to me. Unless I'm missing the irony, of course.

Will watch for JGL then Tatum

Are you dubbing it as a strict translation or are they ad-libbing some stuff, I can't tell.

This looks more in vein of that Aussie Sensible Chuckle show mixed with those Eurotrash skits of horrid English accents dubbed over naked Austrians talking about gardening.

Weird. This is something that maybe works as a collegehumor video. An entire TV show of this? No thanks.

Yeah, perhaps the trailer hasn't done a good job but the over the top explosions, poorly directed stunts, cheesy dialogue and off-beat (forced?) humour kinda reminded me of Darkplace. I guess it was just me then.

I'm disappointed that this looks like a modern show. If the conceit of the series is that it's supposed to be this long lost show from behind the Iron Curtain from the 80s, why does it look like pristine 2010s digital cinema?

I mean, making the comparison again to Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, Darkplace actually did look like a shitty long lost tape of a show from the '80s.

Huh, I don't remember it, but I was maybe too young in the 80s to watch it.

The Romanian leads are current actors. With one of the Romanian leads, Corneliu Ulici being born in 1983 according to Google.

So this isn't an old 1980s Romanian TV show dubbed over. This is a brand new show Amazon is filming in Romanian and dubbing over with a big name Hollywood cast.

They are just claiming it's an old show for marketing/advertising.

It's certainly an interesting idea.

Could have a stronger 80s feel by using old cameras and tape, and a 4:3 ratio but I'm liking it.

The intro and exit with Channing was unnecessary.

Very Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (which is a god tier show) I wonder if this will have that shows eye for detail.

I'll definitely give this a watch.

Because "you'll take your 4:3 480i and love it!" isn't going to go over well with anyone, nor can you actually distribute that particular format anymore these days (Amazon's lowest quality is probably 562p -or whatever the correct number is- or so). The technology itself also no longer exists in any working practice, so you'd never get that.

Also, Darkplace is far too experimental for what Amazon is pushing for at this time. The BBC can do experimental due to not being a public business.
