Amazon patent hints at floating warehouses in the sky

Will the circle be unbroken?

CNN said:
Amazon may one day use blimps stocked with drones to get packages to customers even faster.

The ecommerce giant was approved for a patent in April for airborne warehouses that use drones to make speedy deliveries. The patent was recently discovered by an analyst at CB Insights.

Amazon's patent contends that such a system would allow for deliveries to be made in minutes. The move could also reduce the resources needed to make a delivery.

The patent describes how Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) blimps would circle over cities at 45,000 feet and launch drones carrying orders. The drones would initially fall to earth relying largely on gravity, and their motors would fire up for the final stretch.

Amazon motherships? That's crazy.

What will they do with warehouse employees? They already treat them like shit. But now they have to work on blimps? Or are they going to try to automate all that warehouse work?

This will be a huge loss for the writers who rely on the presence of Zeppelins as a quick sign that you're in a parallel universe.

Will they have the same life expectancy rate as a Shield Hellicarrier?

Exactly there wont be any workers. It will be automated.

I feel like clear skies will be a thing of the past someday. Like eventually it will be full of noisy gaudy drones delivering and advertising.

Drones aren't really noisy though

We might get there once high efficiency solar panels get incorporated into drones or batteries get a major breakthrough

Pretty crazy. Feels weird basically being at the start of "the future". Automatic cars, floating warehouses, drones, solar energy (<hopefully). Now we just need those microwavable pizzas from Back to the Future and we'll be set.

You know, I just had a crazy idea. We always see scifi futures with flying cars, but what if in actuality we'll just see a bunch of flying delivery blimps, trucks, etc and roads will solely be self driving cars for quick human transportation

Wouldn't weight be a huge issue though? It takes a lot of energy to put any kind of weight into the air for any amount of time, and Amazon wants to put warehouses full of shit in the air long-term?

I dream of a day when manual driving on public roads is outlawed and transportation is handled completely by computers that maximize efficiency.

I'd love to live in a sky city, though not so much work for Amazon. At least we know there will be humans working up there. No way in hell it'll just be robots unless we are dumb enough to give robots the high ground in the coming Robot/Human War.

Yeah but think of the joy and laughter the obituary would bring to many

Open that history book to page "dude took out drone delivery services by taking a box of dildos to the forehead"

I'm in af

You don't want free dildos and a fat settlement? You're weird.

idk how to feel anymore, I didn't know today would be filled with so many pros and cons of getting pegged in the face with a box of dildos tbh
