AMD announces FSR 3.1

The right side gif looks a tad softer?
Otherwise the shimmering improvement is fairly obvious.

The big gain here is dlss with framegen which basically solves the 3000 and 2000 series not having framegen while maintaining dlss quality.

AMD does what Nvidia don't.

Jif encoding at the 4:11 mark? Hardware Unboxed are dead to me.
Well I hate them for long time, but if its truly a GIF (not JIF, who the fuck is reading it like that??), then shit like this can happen.

This presentation is mostly about FSR FG implementation in the Snowdrop engine.
But there is one cool thing there.

Good for AMD, Nvidia need's competition, and i've used both DLSS and FSR, i support both tech's and will continue to do so.

We need AMD to really push-- there NEEDs to be valid competition against Nvidia

Their big weaknesses currently is their upscaler solution and Ray Tracing. In terms of pure rasterization their GPUs absolutely compete with Nvidia. Hell, they flat out beat Nvidia often.

Absolutely. They need those. Tracing and AI resolution. Nvidia is showing what they're willing to do to people when they don't feel they have any competition and it's not nice

Some games are already getting patched with FSR 3.1

Ratchet & clank

Ghosts of Tsushima

Spiderman and Miles Morales

Ghost of Tsushima

Missed this at the time, but the API for forward compat sounds good. Does that mean updating for improved upscaling is as simple as swapping out a dll?

Good for amd. If they get their upscaling and rt performance on par with Nvidia I'd consider buying a card from them again.

I was literally waiting for this so I could get R&C on PC lol... I'm too bothered by FSR artifacts except for 1 or 2 cases I was but I have more games to play and could wait patiently anyway

I don't have the game to test, but from what I've read on other forums, the FSr3.1 implementation on R&C is the worst of all the listed games.
There are improvements, but there is still some amount shimmering.
So if you are going to buy this game, do it directly on Steam, so you can refund it, if the image quality is not to your liking.

Excellent series of updates.

I'm eager to see how the .1 upscaler improvements work out. (FSR 3.0 was just framegen, the upscaler was the same problematic one of 2.2 I believe and this promises some improvements in movement quality.)

I also hope some of these features could come to PS5 versions of the game if they're good (although I assume all have custom solutions rather than using AMD, and only framegen would be an unused feature but it wouldn't necessarily matter for these games, although framegen was used on a FSR 3.0 update for Immortals on consoles.)

...Whelp, this news went downhill faster than I could type. Still curious to see what's good and not about the 3.1 rollout.

Horizon Forbidden West too. Nixxes updated the whole suite.

Sort the input lag on frame generation, and clean the image up, and grey zone might actually look and play alright for me finally

I find fsr2 good enough, but mostly because that's the only option on a lot of games. I don't see the disocclusion as much as I do general shimmering. I only use the quality setting because after that it starts looking a little booty.

UE TSR is better, but it's not in many tames. Hopefully this will be enough improvement for me to play on balanced.

Interesting that it's all Playstation titles getting it first.
They must be working real close with Nixxes and PlayStation seeing how they're the only titles announced in their community post. God of War Ragnarök isn't out yet but they mention it along with Jetpack Interactive, too.

I just got ratchet and clank.. it looks bad on steam deck with the setting on.. or I did it wrong

Edit: I did it wrong

This is the Patreon for Lukefz:

For people that want a free version of an FSR3.1 mod, there is DLSS Enabler and Optiscaler.
I recommend DLSS Enabler, a it does most of the work, automatically.

AMD already said they would be improving FSR 3.1 upscaler for pre-90 series cards, is this already available in Optiscaler?

The team at Optiscaler has already implemented it. But they haven't released a version with it yet.

But you can download the SKD from here:

Then take the files amd_fidelityfx_dx12.dll and amd_fidelityfx_vk.dll and place them in the game's folder. Of in the Optiscaler installer, replacing the old version.
The new file version is 1.0.1.41314

I haven't tried it because I have FSR4. But I have seen a few people saying they did notice a significant reduction to disocclusion artifacts.

They need to release a version of RDNA4 for RDNA3 GPUs, or at least RDNA3.5, even if it's a lower quality version, because the lack of ai upscaling is a massive detriment to AMD mobile hardware. All of their APUs, both for laptops and handhelds up to 2027, are sadly RDNA3.5-based, no RDNA4 as they will transition straight to udna in 2027, and that means even Nvidia or Intel mobile hardware that is significantly weaker can produce better or at least comparable image quality. No matter how much they improve FSR3 its not going to be able to produce decent results at handheld low resolutions as seen with steamdeck etc. The switch2 hardware in handheld mode, for example, is comparable and yet it easily produces better image quality/performance due to dlss.

I mean, personally, I have been waiting to buy an AMD APU-based laptop for a long time. All I needed was for them to launch FSR4-compatible hardware, and Im there, and instead they decide to fkn push out RDNA3.5, whatever that means until next gen...

This is sad.

RDNA4 model running on RDNA3 or older is not possible with no hardware acceleration

If they implement "RDNA4" for old hardware will be the evolution of their current software implementation, non the ML one.

Hence, I said a downgraded variant. Rdna3 did improve upon Rdna2 in that regard, albeit nowhere near as dedicated as Nvidia's approaches. I truly hope they can at least develop a frs4 variant for the Rdna3.5 chips because it would be ridiculously shortsighted of AMD to develop their APUs with no ML compatibility in mind when that's all they have until 2027 for laptops and handhelds.
