AMD Radeon 9070XT review thread

The updates will improve over time. What I would like is a nice driver update pretty soon, I've had to disable Freesync Premium because it's causing my screen to flicker on and off. Didn't have this issue with my 7900XT and game performance is fine so it's definitely a driver issue.

Edit: Looks like I managed to solve it by turning off VRR/Gsync on my tv and only enabling Freesync. I think it might have been using both at once, if that's even possible?

Well I cancelled my MSRP 5070ti order and just gonna run with the Asus TUF 9070xt OC. Been almost three weeks of waiting for the 5070ti with no clue as to when it will actually ship.

The 9070xt still came out cheaper in Asus TUF form than the PNY MSRP model I had on order. Nvidia needs to get its stock act together- they almost had me.

PT is twice as demanding as standard RT, but thanks to DLSS features (DLSS performance + FGx2) I found PT games to be very playable on my 4080S. 80-110fps is good enough for me (especially on gamepad) and even DLSS performance still offers 4K like image quality. At 1440p I use DLSS "quality" instead of "performance" mode and get 110-170fps in PT games. I'm perfectly happy with my performance in PT games.

In raster the 9070XR is as fast as my RTX4080S, and sometimes even faster (in AMD sponsored games), but it seems AMD is still one or two generations behind in RT. In PT games my card is up to 233% faster (Indiana Jones), but also games with light RT (like GTA5) runs much better.



At 4K native TAA I get 62-75fps in the grassy areas, and around 75-100fps in the city area. The 9070XT in this video has 33-40fps in grassy areas. With DLSS (transformer "J" preset) on top of that sharpness improves very noticeably compared to TAA native and the game runs around 90fps in the grassy areas and 110-120fps in town. I suspect that grassy areas tank performance on the 9070XT because it doesn't support OMM. Without this feature, RT becomes extremely expensive in grassy areas.

The 9070XT has competitive raster performance, but people who want to play RT games should go for the Nvidia. The 5070ti is only $100-170 more expensive in my country and it will run indinana jones with PT at 200fps at 1440P instead of 30fps on the 9070XT.

I guess it depends on your GPU and how much it is being bottlenecked. I don't know that there is a rule of thumb as to when you are really being hindered by an older CPU. But others here can probably give you a better answer.

In really demanding RT games like cyberpunk, or the witcher 3 I get around 30fps at 4K native. Compared to the aforementioned games, GTA5 Enhanced Edition runs much better.

I think GameGPU benchmarked the game without the latest updates and game-ready drivers. Framerate in GTA5 fluctuate a lot because grassy areas are way more demanding compared to the city, but I still get 62-75fps in the most demanding grassy areas and 75-100fps in the city. With RT very high instead of ultra I get 30% higher framerate and my 4080S starts to be CPU limited at times.

IMO GTA5 is one of the most optimized RT games I have ever played. Some RT games may run faster in 4K (e.g. RE3 remake 130-200fps), but GTA5 has the full package of RT effects. Before playing GTA5 EE I was expecting to get around 60fps with DLSS, but Rockstar has far exceeded my expectations. I don't even need DLSS to play this game at high refresh rate, although I still use DLSS because TAA native doesn't look nearly as sharp.

With all RT settings on high it runs almost 120fps locked in native 4k on 4070tiS. Ultra settings are completely not worth it (as usual).

Every single 5000 series of cards could fail and even then I still don't think gamers would abandon them.

nvidia is just better refocusing on the 6000 series on a more efficient node that gives a better performance uplift without the increased power draw.

Ok so finally got the 9070XT all working properly after uninstalling my 3060Ti and wow performance gains, 1440p everything ultra on MH Wilds at 80FPS, DarkTide (No RT) 160fps, first time with an AMD card, seems brilliant so far

I get 120fps in the city with very high RT, but in the grassy areas framerate will drop to around 90-100fps. I would need to use very high RT and DLSSQ on top of that to get 120fps everywhere at 4K.

Today I drove through the entire map and finally found an area where the frame rate dropped below 60fps (to 56fps to be exact) in 4K TAA native with "maximum RT settings preset".

My 9070 XT Sapphire Nitro + is on the way.
Probably was going to get a 5090 but not after all the bullcrap.

I want to build a good system though with upgrading the graphics card (either 5090 or better when released) in the future.

Any advice what to put with this?

Didn't buy another Nvidia card? How come?
 
Yeah 9070xt prices in euroland are shameful.
Hardware unboxed mentioned a few reasons why this is the case. Probably main reason AMD slashed the price lat the last minute, and is not offering AIBs rebates as in other regions.

Well, if they don't drop near MSRP I am not biting so say buy buy to another potential customer AMD.

Is MSRP in EU about €840 or so? US MSRP is $700 and doesn't include Taxes. So if you throw in VAT, €900 isn't that egregious.

Well guys- I left AMD. I returned the 9070xt and bought a 5070ti Gigabyte Gaming OC.

Works really well. First time using DLSS and god damn is it good. Was worried about the transition from AMD to Nvidia but its been smooth. No DDU needed.

US MSRP is $599, so based on currency conversion and including VAT, then the MSRP is the EU should be ~€670. The actual MSRP specified by AMD for the Euro is €695, so these cards are €200 euro over the MSRP.

I was annoyed that some games I have are DLSS and not FSR4.

Its more about my lack of patience considering I waited forever with my previous 7900xt- the idea of waiting longer for wider adoption when I could spend $200 more and get it now, along with better RT, just makes me sleep better.

Yeah, I can see that and somewhat accidentally managed to get MSRP 5080 today thanks to Microcenter (got it at BestBuy first this morning but order got cancelled).

Now I am debating if I want to keep my MSRP ASRock 9070XT or keep Nvidia. Or I might keep both and finally make a living room Linux "Steambox" PC.

At 1440p the 9070xt doesn't need upscaling. Not sure what you play at but i'm at 4k hence the better upscaling requirements.

Whats MSRP vs what you paid for your 9070xt?

To me MSRP for either makes both cards worthwhile, but the 5070/5070ti are totally irrelevant compared to what's on offer from AMD

I mainly play at 4K and preferably 4K/120. So 5080 at MSRP is pretty attractive, especially if you take RT into account.

That said, not sure it's $400 more attractive.

Absolutely not, MSRP in europe for base models (let's take the sapphire pulse) is ~630 for 9070 and ~690 for 9070 XT, 900 is completely outrageous and I've seen much higher as well.
I'm also seeing a lot of stock for this high priced ones, and could also buy one right now if I wanted to, the prices are just stupid.

FSR4 is really good now.I haven't tried it yet,but you can get FSR4 in quite a few games using Optiscaler
