Americans: Would you fight in another Civil War?

It's probably not likely, but suppose Titor was right and the blue states did go to war with the red states in some future scenario. Would you fight for your home state regardless of its "color"? Would you try to defect to the other side? Would you be against the war / seccession entirely?

Bonus - for non-Americans - would you advocate your country intervening in the conflict, or staying out of it?

Hmm... no I wouldn't fight. Probably try to go to Canada if possible. If not, pay some cayotes to sneak me across the Mexican border.

Haha, ludicrous. I do feel alienated and perplexed by the idealogies of the "red" states, but there's no way in hell I would harm them.

Would they harm me if Jesus started whispering in their ear? I like to think it's unlikely.

Let's say the OT forum had a civil war, and half of the forum wanted to fight because they wanted more sex lives and technology help topics, and the other half wanted more "What are you listening too" and sports threads....

I dont think it would happen... besides, a popular resistence wouldnt have a prayer anymore.. military is far too technological it would be put down in a hurry.

No. I don't identify completely with either side (although socially speaking I lean much more to the left), not to mention killing someone just because their ideas happen to be different from mine doesn't seem all that kosher to me.

What I would do is get the hell out of here.

It depends on the climate I guess. The post-911 and pre-Iraq 'you're not American!' 'freedom!' blah blah environment would sound pretty ridiculous to get caught up in, if someone just wrote it out on paper before it actually happened. So I can't rule out how I'd react.

I would probably continue doing what I'm doing and flee the US.

No fucking way. I'm not fighting over a plot of land. I'd move to Canada or Europe, which I'm planning on doing anyway. So I can't see why I'd want to risk dying for something stupid as that. PEACE.

Uhh, we have a civilian military. If you think that they'd be keen on firing upon their families and friends, regardless of how it was framed by their superiors, you're insane. Yeah, if there were small pockets of fighting, it could be spun as those rebels being treasonous/insane, and the military would attack them-- but when their own families and friends starting becoming involved in the altercations, it'd stop quickly.

I'd like to know what is meant by 'we have a civilian military' here, and I'd like to know of a country that doesn't have one. I don't think America seems very special in terms of how its military interacts with its people.

This is the second time I've seen someone on this forum point this out as something unique or special.

Did I say that it's unique? It's certainly not-- not among modernized and non-communist/dictatorial nations, at least. All I'm saying is that it lessens the chance that there'd be a large-scale, sustained military effort against the populace, if that popular movement was in any way widespread (as I said, small pockets of rebels could be painted as kooks of some sort-- not so for 40M+ people).


And I think that there are still quite a few countries that have a military "class" (that is, where the military, along with their families, are kept isolated from the civilian populace, thus skewing their allegiances), but I'm too lazy to do any research; my main point was just that it lessens the chance of our military being used against us (as it does for any country that has a similarly comprised military).

You guys are stupid. If civil war broke out that would be the biggest land grab in recent memory and I would raise an army and take huge chunks of the former United States for myself and form the Nation of Greg under the "Phoenix Mandate".

Yeah, good point - if there were a new U.S. Civil War, al-Qaeda would swoop in and destroy both sides.

Hell yeah! I would kick some redneck ass! Lets not forget that California has an unlimited army of Mexicans just waiting to be called up. The Red states don't stand a chance.

It really ends up being urban areas (strongly democratic) versus rural areas (strongly republican)
