It's simple, really. As long as you can strike early and strike fast.
Order multiples of each amiibo when ordering for in store pickup. That way, you have your pick of the litter. A better chance at getting one in desirable condition.
Yes, I'm the jag that ordered 24 amiibo from wave three and the most likely reason that there are no more "in-store pickup" options for my store.
Go up to the counter when you pick them up and ignore the temptation to feel ashamed or embarrassed when they haul a huge pile of colorful figurines from the back.
Go through the process of checking ID and showing the card used to purchase them.
Sign your receipt, and when they bag them up for you, DON'T GO ANYWHERE.
Go through your amiibo and select the ones that are worthy of your ownership. For example, with wave three, choose the eight you find desirable. Then, hand the other sixteen BACK to the employee.
They will most likely need your ID again, but after lots of scanning, they will have returned your amiibo for you and you will get 2/3 of your investment back in two to three business days.
After the adventure that was Wave 1 (in which I bought one of each, like a fool), this is how I've done Wave 2 and Wave 3. So far so good. Just got my Zelda and Diddy today (well, three each, initially...).

Or you can keep your spares for scalping or helping GAF or what have you. I've thought of holding onto some extras for the latter purpose.

My local Toys R Us didn't have any Luigi's out yet, but they had a ton of Lucario pre-order cards. Got one of course, but if each pre-order card guarantees an Amiibo, I'd like to think the exclusives will be plenty in stock. At least I hope so.... I need my Rosalina

Just checked and Best Buy is processing my Little Mac Pre-Order and Zelda just shipped earlier! Super excited as I could not find a single one at 2 Wal-Marts and 2 Gamestops.

Very long story, I hope you ALL read it.
So, I pre ordered Marth, Samus and the Smash Bros bundle at Best Buy for in store pick up. Order went through, sweet.
Fast forward to 11/21, I drive to my local Best Buy to pick up my order.
Bundle? Check.
Samus? Check.
Marth? Huh? Where is he? I told the CS rep that one amiibo was missing. She looked everywhere in the store for me and the database. It turns out Nintendo didn't ship any Marths in Connecticut (soon after Massachusetts as well). She showed me the Best Buy database herself for Marth. That CS person was a saint, she should be a role model all CS people.
She apologized and told me to keep calling to see when its available. I had one week until the order was cancelled. I can totally wait a week.
I proceeded to call the day before Thanksgiving. I asked if Marth was in since I got an email for the order pickup the day before. The person who picked up the phone was like "yo Falcon I see it right here, its ready go pick up (exact words)." I had to work that night so I had my parents get it for me since they were going to Rhode Island which was on the way. Mind you this is the day BEFORE Thanksgiving. On the way to Best Buy from RI, it took 2 hours (should have been 45 minutes). They didn't god damn have it. My dad saw the guy there who claimed it was there and he wanted beat the shit out of him for making him wait in traffic only to find out he lied and it wasnt here. The guy thought Link was Marth.
Saturday comes and Nintendo never shipped any more Marths to fulfill the pre orders in store. I called BBCS to change it to ship to home. It is scheduled to arrive 12/23 but there is no guarantee since I have seen people get Links from Amazon instead.
So this is the funny part. I emailed Best Buy 12/6 to find out what is wrong with mt order (I didn't know at the time when it would arrive) and Nintendo as well regarding discontinuity and compensation for never sending any to my area. My dad was leaving for Japan. He found displays filled and crates behind the counter of Marths, Villagers, WFTs and every amiibo available at this Bic Camera he went to. He got me one, stayed a week for his job. Came back the following Saturday night(12/13) and I finally got one. Best Buy responded that Monday and Nintendo that Tuesday. It was faster to go to Japan, stay there a week, buy the Amiibo and come back than to hear a response from Nintendo or Best Buy.
So that is why fellow Amiibo collectors, you don't do ship to store at Best Buy or any other store (amiibos only). Because something like this might happen. Mind you this is not a Best Buy (CS department aside) issue but rather Nintendo's fault for not properly shipping a product to two states.

Forgot to mention that TRU had pre-order cards for all of Wave 3. Won't get them there since the price is more than other places, but I wish other retailers had those pre-order instore cards.

Sweet just imported a Pit and Cpt. Falcon! Just 40 bucks. Not that bad if I don't say so myself.
Or just always have a plan B. Like the going to Japan part.
That freaking sucks. I hope that doesn't happen to any of us. I'm glad you got your Marth!

You could have got 3 amiibos US for that price though in store... I ordered from amazon.de at 33$ though to US. My only issue is it having the number on the box vs. the rest of my US set not... although I'll cancel the order if it shows up on target.com again staying up all night not missing it this time.

I knew that the Nintendo World Store was getting more Marth and Villager's (well that's what they've been telling me on the phone for over a week).
So this week was my hell week. I have an 11month old daughter, Tuesday I had to go get her bloodwork, today my mother in law had a doctor's appointment at 2pm, tomorrow is a christmas party, etc... So my luck it would come to the Nintendo Store today. And it did.
Anyone from the NYC area knows this, I drove down from Yonkers. So I was home at 12:15pm because I was suppose to watch my 11 month old daughter while my mother in law went to the doctor.
Well, 12:30pm, I see the thread here, and I call down. They got em. I pack my mother in law and baby up in the car, and drive down there. Now, today is a "gridlock" alert day. Which means, you can't get anywhere once you are inside Manhattan by car.
So I parked on W. 52nd between 9th and 10th Ave. and ran to W. 48th between 5th and 6th. It's about a mile. LOL. I was so dead. I get there, and I'm waiting in line, and guess what? 4 people behind me is my wife's sister's boyfriend! LOL. I think he was buying me Marth and Villager for Christmas!!!! (THEY ARE THE BEST). So I got my set (since it's 1 per customer), and I'm pretty sure they are going to give me the other set!!!! I'm sooooo pumped. I actually did want 2 of them. One to open and use, and one to collect
. But I may keep them both boxed. LOL. I really love the boxes. Oh and I didn't get a bent sword one!
Oh and my mother in law made it to her doctor appointment by 2:20pm. Not bad!

Yeah, and if I run into a Rosalina or Lucario in the Wild I can just picked them up so I have a complete NA roster.
Did they have a lucario pre-order? If so can you get one for me?

I picked up Zelda at Best Buy this morning and had no issues at all. I pre-ordered all of wave 2 on the 8th. I'm going to pick up the rest when Best Buy gets them. They are getting each one at a different time though.
Hope I won't run into any problems for wave 3. I have Meta Knight pre-ordered for in-store pick up at the usual Best Buy I go to (which is pretty great for in-store pick ups) and the rest (not including the exclusives) at a different Best Buy.

Oh screw that guy. They shouldn't even let someone pre-order that many since it's flat out clear they intend to scalp them. I'm considering pre-ordering an extra one or two just in case one of my friends runs into trouble getting theirs. Perhaps I should.
And I can't believe I missed Rosalina already. I really want one of her.

Rosalina being such a pain to preorder atm is such a annoyance.
Especially when she's one of my mains in smash and that is the main reason I want her on my shelf.
EB did care that scalpers bought them up but I guess at the store level they don't. It's just really stupid why bother having a preorder if you can let one person buy them all though honestly.
Demand is through the roof so yeah unless everything is abundant in Wave 3 nonexclusives then it will be the same.

They can't take his away but they could allocate 1 preorder slot from one store to that one.
Oh good idea I'm gonna complain anyways.
Its OK if its sold out but not OK if you let one guy but then ALL.

He's a douche, but retailers aren't new to this game. They should have limits on exclusives like this.
Still no Wave 2s yet where I live. Absolutely insane. Not even a Zelda. I finally just ordered a Zelda and a Luigi on amazon, and also put in a pre-order for Bowser and Sheik (my most wanted wave 3s. I figured they would be common, but apparently none of them are going to be common where I live). The quality on these varies so much from figure to figure that I really don't like buying them blind, but I can't take checking every store in town every day any more.
Might be done with Amiibo after those 4. It's just too much of a pain.

That's what really bugs me about this. People who actually play these games and main these characters (like you said with Rosalina) are having trouble or just plain not getting their favorite characters because of scalpers and people who only care about these now because they're popular. I've loved Animal Crossing since the GC game and plan to main Villager when I get the game but because I couldn't pre-order his amiibo, I'm now SOL until NA sees a new shipment because I'm sure as shit not paying $30+ for one.
Not to mention Rosalina being an exclusive and the clueless people out there who think she's Elsa and buying her up because of that alone.
