The skill and talent level,of your average person back then had to be way more than today. 7 billion people on earth today, no idea how many there was back then but I doubt it was even half that. They had all these engineers, artists painters. How many painters in one of your cities could even paint something like that, let alone a small town? Every Roman town had shit like that in it.

I remember in saw on a documentary some ancient jewels and Roman treasures found and one of them was this egg shaped thing with gems on it. No one has figured out how it was made. The design is intricate. They could recreate it, but they haven’t figured out how the romans did it with the tools they had available to them back in their time. That’s how advanced they were, experts today can’t even figure them out in some respects.
Nowadays we have twerking and Tik Tok. The world is devolving.

Pompeii was really cool to visit, esp with the volcano looming in the background. Ruts in the road of the carts paths, pipes to and from the more expensive houses (lead which opens up a lot of interesting discussions). Brothels with lewd images all over the walls.. And so on...
Visiting Pompeii was one of the most interesting parts of visiting Italy.

The one thing they had back then which wouldn't jive now is time.

Back then, you read about churches, palaces and castles being constructed not in years, but over decades. I think there are some uber churches which had been work on for 100s of years.

They also surely had 100s or even 1,000s of people al slave laboured to build stuff by hand. Probably working in heat 15 hours per day with no weekends. And if you suck, some dude with a whip gives you a lashing to hurry up. Now you got giant skyscrapers going up and it always seems there's hardly any construction crew even on site building it.

These examples just show how absolutely creative humans are and how that separates us from the rest of the animal world. These pieces of art above are thousands of years old, yet if you gave me a chisel or paintbrush I couldn't make that - that means that a ton of skills, creativity, learning, teaching, and passion goes into it, and those qualities can be expressed regardless of technology or age.

Yeah, what an incredible find. Was in Pompeii like 2 yrs ago, its such a cool site. You also notice how life in its essence was still very similar to what it is today when you look at the home designs, streets etc.
I don't necessarily think this is the best example. Our singular creativity sure, but there is obviously far more creativity distributed throughout the rest of the biological world that resides in humanity. As for artistic beauty, form and function humans in my opinion haven't created anything that can rival stuff in say the world of flowers, butterflies, and birds. I mean involved in promoting ecological urbanism, and in terms of aesthetics, coral reefs straight blow away any city I have seen, contemporary or ancient. It is the degree to which we employ conscious design and planning that distinguishes us, and how this ties to function.

I wish we could get a birds eye view of civilization back in time. Life is such a strange concept, time seems irrelevant but images like this really make a person seems small in the grand scheme.

This is pretty cool.

Looks like they served chicken, duck, and.... dog?

Architectural design not that different than what we use today. The Romans were so advanced.

The dog is tied up like a pet, its doubtful a menu item anymore then Nymph was on the menu

Virtual reality will bring it to us as close as possible one day. When technology advances and we gather more data, I think there will be programs where you can insert yourself into a random point in time and it'll look and feel photorealistic and you can interact with people and walk around and explore.

Better than nothing I guess.

It's crazy to think people lived there, that kids probably saw that artwork and found it cool, that people may have used that place as a meeting place... it's 2000 years old and it's very different than what we have today...

I really don't buy the "Civilization is only 6500 years" thing. We know humans have been around for at least 200.000 years, it's very unlikely that we're the first to develop a big civilization and technology.
