An Even Newer DS Model

AMN has just posted a story on their DS site that reveals a patent for a DS model that Nintendo has never officially shown before.

In addition, this DS has a very special feature that has never been mentioned yet either.

You can check out the article here.

"double touch screen. didn't Apple just do that?"

yes but hundreds of different products contain mutli-touch screens, it's definately not an apple invention. the one i can think of right now in particular is an electronic music triggering device that features a touch screen with 5 touch points at the same time.

The d-pad and a/b buttons look completely unusable. Look at how low they are.

That said, it looks like it could be cool for a completely new system in the future. It would really allow the lower screen to become a joypad and therefore justify two screens.

hmmm ... not a DS ... has 2 buttons ... new features ... GBA is almost 5 years old ... I GOT IT ... its the new GAME BOY. DS/GBA = Game Boy ... Touch?

You mean DS micro. :D

While the DS Nano will do away with all buttons, and you'll merely stare down the game until it does what you want.

"A new patent filed by Nintendo Co. Ltd. on Feb. 2nd, 2006..."

This drives me insane. Pet peeve alert: people who can't read patent filing dates.

The patent was actually filed on Jul 19th, 2005.

Look next to the text "Filwed" on the left (22). It was only published recently, because the USPTO is low. July 19th is quite some time ago, probably before the DS Lite was designed, etc. etc.

(Also, this isn't a "new DS model" -- it's a patent. Wow, I'm cranky!)

Yup. Companies patent stuff all the time that don't necessarily come to fruition. It's still interesting, though. At least this one is from mid-2005, and not like 1999 like so many "new" patents that get dug up.

Based on some older patents Ive seen, the real deal ehre seems to be the multi-touch screen. The actual design of the unit doesnt matter, its just to give the context.

Think of it like the GBA Dev kit which shipped with a SNES controller and a screen. GBA doesnt have 4 face buttons, but the dev kit does.

Nice site!

So, either the DS Lite will have multiple touch functions that have yet to be announced, or another DS is in the works to be launched at some point after the DS Lite.

Really? It's one of those two? lol

Oh snap! I bet this'll either become the DS2 or the GameBoy Evolution. Perfect merge of the two, I'd say. Dual screen, classic GB button layout, and the new innovation of it is a touch screen that can detect two different points. Slick!

Wonder if it'll ever become a reality?

Its probably for the next gameboy notice how it only has A and B buttons like previous gameboys

Do you honestly think the next Game Boy is going to have two buttons?

WTF. How is that a GOOD thing?

I see we will have double-pronged penises (penii) in the future... GROSS.

without reading all the posts in this thread, i wanted to ask a few things.

how far back does R&D /patents on the original Nitro (DS) go?

It was announced by Nintendo without its name in 2003. fully revealed and released in 2004. so it has to go back to at least 2001-2002 and probably earlier, right? would you guys say it goes back to the late 1990s, or more like the early part of this decade ?

also, do you guys think that, aside from futher revisions of DS such as the one discussed here, that Nintendo is working on a true next-gen DS? call it 'DS 2' or 'Super DS', if you will.

a most likely fake mock-up of DS 2

but interesting anyway :)

*sigh*

Patent-digging is like searching for needles in a haystack where no needles were dropped.

Not to mention that those pics actually look awfully familiar. I think they appeared in another of these patent threads...probably one in 2005 :P

What's pretty interesting it's that this patents secures a DS touch panel wich detects two simultaneous contact points, menwhile final DS hardware doesn't does this.

Maybe, this patent is for future installements on the DS brand.

Oh my god, I'm loving to think of a DS with more power than a PSP. Can't wait for this.

Well, considering how Nintendo opted to keep the revmote's number of buttons to a minimum. Sounds quite likely they'll keep the next gen GB simple...and rely on a nice widescreen multi-point touchscreen instead.

This is complete bullshit. This was taken from a interview with Reggie recently where he said that they plan to have revisions every 18 months or something to that extent. They just took that and added speculation to it. Besides, this site has been proven to be unreliable in the past.

Mr.Miyamoto = Logan Predy (the "author" of that article)

At least that's my theory.

I thought as much as well. No offense to them, but the writers on that site just have a habit of constantly posting their own articles on message boards.

The design has that old look of past Gameboys. Nothing like what Nintendo has been doing with Micro, Rev, and DS Lite. My guess on the patent is that it's an early DS model, back when it had only A/B buttons, and the two-pointing position touchscreen scrapped to keep costs down.
