Analysts mixed over Sony PS3 delay
Merrill estimates cost of manufacturing system at $800

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- A downgrade of Sony Corp. and a flurry of analysts' comments are raising further questions over whether the company's forthcoming PlayStation 3 video-game console will miss the all-important holiday launch window in the United States.

Merrill Lynch electronics analyst Hitoshi Kuriyama wrote Thursday that the PS3 launch could be delayed anywhere from six to 12 months, with the result being an autumn launch in Japan and a late 2006 or early 2007 launch in the United States.

In addition, Goldman Sachs analyst Yuji Fujimori wrote Monday that as long as the launch takes place in time for Christmas 2006, a delay is not necessarily a negative, and that any share price decline presents an opportunity to buy on weakness.

In January, MarketWatch wrote about the possible delay as Sony downplayed the PS3 at the Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas. See related story, "PlayStation 3 launch date in question."

Most U.S.-based video-game publishers, however, have said in their most recent series of earnings calls that a holiday 2006 launch is more likely. See quarterly earnings report for Electronic Arts.

A Sony representative said that the company is standing by its "spring 2006" launch period. Sony's U.S.-traded shares were last off 0.8% to $45.64, and have lost 8% of their value since closing at $49.80 last Tuesday.

Merrill on Thursday downgraded Sony shares to sell from neutral, focusing in part on the high manufacturing costs for building the new machine. A Friday note from Merrill semiconductor analyst Joe Osha estimated that the initial bill of materials for the "expensive and difficult-to-manufacture" PS3 could total $800, with costs falling to $320 three years from launch.

With analysts expect the PS3 to sell at around $400, Merrill Lynch said that Sony might consider delaying the release until it can reduce manufacturing costs further in 2007.

Although Sony dominates the global market for video-game hardware, it currently lags Microsoft Corp. in the battle for next-generation consoles. Microsoft launched its Xbox 360 console on Nov. 22 in the United States and sold 1.5 million units globally during its most recent quarter; the company maintains it will ship 4.5 million to 5.5 million systems for the entire fiscal year ending June 30. See Microsoft earnings report. Also see archived story on Xbox 360 launch.

In January, Evan Wilson of Pacific Crest Securities said "the most likely scenario" is that PS3 will be released in Japan this summer with about 1 million units, and in America in November with 1 million units, followed by a European launch in March 2007.

Later in the same month, Prudential analyst Brent Thill wrote: "We think the news may come at two large Sony-specific conferences early in March taking place in the same week -- Destination PlayStation, from Feb. 27 to March 3, and DevStation, a PS3 developers conference, from March 1 to March 2 in London."

Thill thinks that Sony will launch PS3 in Japan this June or July, in North America in November and Europe in early 2007.

Didn't they (Merrill Lynch) say PS2 would retail for $400 during the same year PS2 was to be released?

Also, I agree with Yuji Fujimori. As long as it gets out in time for Christmas, it shouldn't be a problem.

But knowing my luck, I won't get my hands on a PS3 until next year anyway.

It appears that the PlayStation 3 will contain many expensive, difficult-to-manufacture electronic components--much like a top-of-the-line synthesizer.

like the thing from the Masters of the Universe movie?

and of course it will come fitted with a burglar alarm, because PS3 is so bloody expensive...

Oh I'll be selling PLAYSTATION 3s like a mutherfucker come launch :D

:lol

Damn You....people will be making a nice profit off this thing if they play their cards right. Who honestly thinks Sony will be able to meet demand?

This article states ML's estimate at 800$ not 900$. Did ML fix their special math or are they just guessing it was a mistake? Either way it's BS, but people argued the ML article was rushed and thus error ridden, maybe there's a new more fleshed out article? Anyway, just curious.

I'd try to get all the piano blacks you could if its available at launch. Fans seem to be all over that one. It'll likely bring in more than a silver one would.

In general, would it be possible to pre-order more than one system at a time anyways?

Most places will let you pre-order one, but get your wife, brother, sister or GF to preorder one...

I have 2 preordered at Gamestop and another 2 at Gamecrazy....

I think that, for the first time ever, I am gonna go to my local Wal Mart and camp out for a Midnight Launch party......gotta do that once in my life, and I might as well be doing it for PS3 :D

Oh and...FTW:

They'll probably only have one colour at launch (silver?).

White FTW, btw.

So damn slick!

Though I would be afraid to touch it, cause like the PSP, it's beautiful glossy look would likely be marred by my fingerprints.

It's funny the PS2 kinda had a 80s-design vibe to it, the PS3 looks like an early 90s type of design.

It's OK ... the size of the unit is pretty gaudy though .... its going to look big no matter what the color is. The boomerang controller just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the system design either.

I just hope there is no "power brick" to deal with.

Didn't Sony already say that the system will only be availible in the silver color?
Yup, shortly after E3, even. I cried. Maybe they've changed their mind since..

I'm offering someone a PS3 if they can't buy it. Now if they want to offer me 1500 i'll gladly accept that.

i hope they give you it in rape $'s, scumster!

Come on Sony, 10 million launch units and scalpers burnt! :D!

Hmm, if I am somehow not able to preorder, I will consider your offer. No more than $50-100 over the original console price though. Come on, you can't screw over a fellow gaffer like you would random eBayer. :)

At this point, all this speculation is a huge marketing hype for Sony....

Basically they can do anything and it'll hype the system some more...

i think everyone who doubted MassiveAttack should have aftershave rubbed into their freshly shorn nuts...

... even if it turns out he was wrong! :D
