Yes ok I agree, but is incredible, the same day that sony re confirm, the analyst say the contrary.meltpotato said:i think speculation is fair until they actually lock themselves into a date.

Are they so stupid?

Ok, but why I must belive to the analyst, when the same sony confirm not deley?meltpotato said:honestly, there is plenty of room for reasoning on both sides. we will just have to wait and see what develops. a lot of people have brought up great reasons why a delay will provide a benefit for early adopters so im happy no matter what happens.

Sony showcases PlayStation 3 at the Taipei Game Show
Sony will postpone the scheduled launch of its PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console from this spring until August, as the company is facing several issues with its production plans, especially its plans to include a Blu-ray Disc drive in the next-generation game console.
Nvidia unaffected by possible PS3 delay, say sources

Sales of Nvidia graphics chips should not be affected by a possible delay in the launch of Sonys PlayStation 3 game console since the company is only licensing graphics technology to Sony instead of producing silicon for the Japanese console vendor, according to sources at Nvidia Taiwan.
Sony will postpone the launch of its PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console from this spring until August, as the company is facing issues with production plans, according to an earlier report.
Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Hwang, however, admitted in a conference call that the company would not receive any royalty payments during the current quarter (ending April) from Sony, despite the fact that Nvidias RSX graphics chip, the PS3s graphics engine, is ready, according to a February 17 report by Realm Media Networks.
Sony is likely to outsource production of RSX chips to IBM or Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), according to sources at Taiwan contract makers.
On the other hand, ATI Technologies, Nvidias rival, seems to have gained an advantage in the PC gaming sector by supplying its R500 (Xenos) graphics chip for Microsofts Xbox 360, according to market sources.
With strong sales of the Xbox 360 plus chip orders for Nintendos upcoming Revolution game console, ATI is set to see revenues grow at a robust pace this year, the sources indicated.

Executives at Sony's PlayStation unit also risk testing the patience of their colleagues on the consumer electronics side of the company, who say plans for Blu-ray are on schedule. Members of the Blu-ray Disc Assn., including those at Sony's consumer electronics unit, are furious at what they call erroneous statements about Blu-ray delays.
Sony in mid-March is scheduled to release pricing and availability this summer of standalone machines, sources say. Meantime, both Samsung and Pioneer have said their machines will be on retailers' shelves in a few months. "We are pretty much on track to see initial Blu-ray products appear as early as May," says Pioneer Senior Vice-President Andy Parsons.

Only in America
Honestly, Sony can't lose as long as they get enough units out to North America for Holiday 2006. Really, that's the key...

The groaning erupted into a full roar over the weekend, as a report from Merrill Lynch states that the PlayStation 3 may cost as much as $800 when it hits retail.
In the U.S., you need to have software available at launch.soundwave05 said:Is there really a good reason to launch first in Japan other than tradition?
Why not launch in North America in September, and then bring the PS3 out in Japan in November or even December. As long as its before the year-end Japanese shopping rush, it really doesn't negatively affect Sony.

There's some interesting Blu-ray Disc news today. On Friday, Wall Street brokerage firm Merrill Lynch issued a report suggesting that the launch of Sony's Blu-ray compatible PlayStation 3 console could be delayed as much as a year from the company's initially anticipated Spring 2006 target date. We'd been hearing that the launch might be pushed back to November, but this could mean Spring 2007. What's worse, some cost estimates place the launch production cost of each PS3 unit as high as $900 ($230 for the Cell processor alone, along with another $350 for the Blu-ray Disc drive). That would mean a likely retail price for consumers at between $700-800. The news has set Sony's stock falling and actually impacted the entire Tokyo stock market on Monday. Sony has denied these reports, but has yet to announce official details on launch date and price. Ouch. You can read more here at Gamespot.

Tenacious-V said:This particular part is of interest to me. With the BoM already estimated to be where it is, was that under the assumption that RSX was going to be built inhouse at Sony?? If it indeed is going to be outsourced to TSMC (more likely than IBM imo), that would bring the price of RSX even higher as it would require additional charges to outsource and the cost of yields couldn't be absorbed by Sony, inevitably making the BoM go up even more. Along with that would be a slower decline in manufacturing cost compared with inhouse manufacturing, overall making RSX more expensive for a longer period of time.....

Tenacious-V said:I'm kinda confused on what that's trying to say....
Mmmkay said:It's saying that SCEI has always outsourced to meet demand, because they have limited capacity. So news that RSX is being outsourced shouldn't come as a surprise, but perhaps when it starts is the key missing piece of the puzzle. I've half a mind to suspect that the 'August' date and RSX news being coupled would be in reference to Taiwanese contractors coming online to supply the extra demand what SCEI cannot meet.
Tenacious-V said:So we're going under the assumption that RSX is being manufactured in house, but at capacity. So they're outsourcing as well?
But to what extent is the outsourcing? Aren't Sony making CELL in house as well? If so, how much space do they have for RSX at Sony in the first place?
Mmmkay said:It's not nearly clear enough yet to say with certainty. But I think we've always been under the assumption that RSX was being made in-house. CELL is initially being made at IBM with SCEI stepping in later to take over, so really they've not got much else to make.
