I've been to a few of the high-end restaurants in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Wasn't impressed at all... and I do know how to cook.

As an American, I think the biggest issue with our food is the amount of stuff allowed in it. Salt for example, so much of our food is packed with far more salt than necessary which means many are desensitized to the high doses to where any amount less makes it "bland" Other flavorings and dyes, the use of high fructose or Aspartame instead of cain sugar...it's rediculous. Overly spiced, overly smoked, brine solution filled, overly cheese flavored and overly garnished with gravies, butter....everything about our food is designed to compete with other foods, so they increase the "flavor" with whatever is cheap.

Want to eat healthy here? Well that costs a lot more money. Walk into any common, mainstream grocery like Walmart and there isn't much available that's legit healthy. Plenty of labels designed to fool you like "heart healthy" though. "Organics" can be 3-4 x's the cost. Many communities here have what we call "food deserts" where you have to drive quite a ways to acquire healthy foods which leaves out the poor folks. I don't know anything about Brittish foods but I think if American's think it's bland then it's probably because it doesn't have enough salt and fake flavorings in it.

The problem with the beef stew is the lack of vegetables. Add some carrots, peas, celery, parsley for garnish, and plate it in a bowl instead of dumping it on a flat plate like an animal, and it would look like any other beef stew.

America, asia and uk are pretty bad in this reguard.

In places like italy and russia theres more fruit and veg and less processed crap.
However like all populations there is quite a lot of variety to what people eat.
