They're playing here at the club on campus (Club Downunder) in October, w00t! Hurricane Ivan caused Of Montreal's show for tomorrow to be cancelled though... :( I hope it gets re-scheduled.

their label is holding off because of some major bands coming out with album in the Oct/Nov months (emeiem, no doubt, U2). I do think it is somewhat of a mistake, especially since the album is leaked.

good stuff though :)

IMO it is better the source tags and code. the songs are just more interesting and friendly i guess. the kids song is awesome.

track 2 fuckin owns. this needs to be the single not worlds apart.

did they get any radio time with source tags?

I must be the only one that's not very into this. It feels too mellow and polished. Maybe someday, but it's not grabbing me now.

And I have easy access to it if anyone wants to PM me. I'll be taking it down soon though.

See, this is why I like it. But I can understand your opinion. Like, if I wanted to listen to more raw, abrasive, screamy madness I'd listen to Madonna or ST&C. Variety is a good thing.

Variety *is* a good thing, but when I think Trail of Dead, I think forward-thinking post-hardcore. I like this record, but it sounds like somebody spooged Floyd all over the studio tapes. I know Trail of Dead and ATDI are both from Texas -- is there something in the water that turns all the post-hardcore boys into Floydian proggers?

Trail of Dead has (had?) an absolutely revelatory live show. However, I fear their mushroom-cloud laying live act may have been stringent on their pyrotechnic guitars, crushing riffs, loud up-front vocals, and dense sonic quality. This album. . .has none of that. It has mad production that shows me the studio they've spent the past 3 years building is indeed state of the art. Some of the songs jump out at me, but I'm disappointed by the lack of an obvious hardline rocker in the vein of Baudelaire or Monsoon, or Days of Being Wild, or Homage.

I've only listened to the album a handful of times, and I guess its a good follow-up to a nigh perfect album, but I can't help but be a little disappointed that they appear to have left their roots behind completely. I haven't really delved into the lyrics and song writing much, but it appears to be an improvement, however I have a bad feeling that the plastic sheen on the record will make any song writing improvements a moot point.

I'm sort of a mix of angry, disappointed, happy, and relieved. They didn't fuck up the follow-up. There's some nice touches. There's a couple of great songs. They're giving us something new. It's better than the post-hardcore turned prog of The Mars Volta. There's a lot of good things here, but the big bad thing is that the Trail of Dead I've loved and worshipped for 3 years apparently now resides in the land of ghosts.

Super Furry Animals' next album is officially the album of 2005. Fuck you, Trail of the Dead. You lose.

I'm still holding a torch for Travistan. If Trail of Dead can't deliver the hardcore action, perhaps the man that fronted the band ToD was often compared to could. Alas, it appears I'm the only one that has high hopes for this album.

Also. . .SMiLE motherfuckers! The Go! Team. There's still contenders to be released. . .and it's official, this Arcade Fire album is making my list in some capacity. To release the best debut album of the year in the same 12 months as Franz Ferdinand and TV on the Radio is quite a feat.

EDIT: Ack, sorry, I was thinking 2004, still. 2005? New Bjork? I doubt it. Medulla was supposed to be out originally in like the Fall of 2003 when it was known as the Lake Experience or whatever. Unless her next record is as stripped down as Medulla actually sounds, we won't be getting more Bjork action until 2006.

Super Furry Animals? Yeah right...

We have Spoon, Beck, and a new Björk album to look forward to! And possibly maybe the Flaming Lips!

Super Furry Animals, to me, are better than all of those bands. :D Six albums strong, each one building on the strengths of its predecessor. I haven't encountered many bands capable of that much.

Well, actually, all of their albums are great individually. I can't say one is more evolved than the other. What I can say is that they've yet to bore or disappoint me, unless you're counting the occasional unremarkable b-side. But that's not what this thread is about.

New Trail of the Dead = :(

True story: At an SFA show I attended Wayne Coyne was present. I'll bet he likes them better than his own band.

Aw fuck, why am I saying SFA are better than The Flaming Lips? All I'm suggesting is that that's the album I'm holding out hope for. Phantom Power spoke to me in many ways, as did their live shows. To scoff at a band that can produce this is unreasonable in my eyes. I fail to see how in a world of crap British bands like Keane, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand, Radiohead, etc., people can't take that seriously.

The Flaming Lips hold a special place in my heart, as does Bjork.

Real bad news on the Travis Morrison front White Man. He's turned on us... now he spends his days praising the works of Dashboard Confessional, while trying to delude people into thinking his new mp3s are anything besides pure shit. Travistan is going to be a disaster.

Yeah, but you see, when she was working on "THE LAKE EXPERIENCE" she was also touring the GH album, so there is a chance that we'll see the Medulla follow up next year because she is working on it right now, and doesn't plan on touring until it's done.

crap British bands like ... Radiohead

Surely you jest.

I don't have a problem with polishing, but it just doesn't work here. This isn't what I'm used to Trail of the Dead sounding like... and while I have no problem with change in general, I just don't think this is a good change. It's overproduced (and poorly at that, in my opinion) and as White Man mentioned, the Floyd inspriation is extremely obvious... but not fully successful. This just isn't the sound that they seemed to have been leading into... and for me, that's a problem because that's just what I loved about them.

It's not a BAD album, it's just not working for me. Perhaps things will change by the time this is fully released, but if it stays as is, I'm not into it.

no i dont :(

It doesn't exist since this was leaked far earlier than most albums usually are. As far as I can tell, none of the untitled tracks even have official names decided on yet.

The new Spoon is going to kick everyone's ass, you heard it here first folks.

As for ToD, I was really hoping they'd go the more dance-punk route that "Intelligence" off of last years EP displayed. Oh well. I'm gonna wait 'til release on this one.

Dead

well not really...yet

Im hoping its as far away as possible as last years EP, good lord I hated that one to the last note. But yeah most of the impressions ive read seem like they went into a "floydian" mode

Yeah, I kind of feared this. I've heard people say that the songs sound like shitty imitations of songs off Change. Between that news and the whole ToD goin' Volta thing, I'm kind of sad. . . the age of post-hardcore appears to be past us. It's sort of the genre that turned me from a Dischord-lovin' hardcore whore into the elitist prick I am today. I can't even comprehend how a genre that gave us both Emergency and I and Source Tags can be allowed to die like this.

I have heard people say Travistan sounds better than those tragic mp3s. My fingers are still crossed. I'm still glad I got to see the Dismemberment Plan. They also had a killer live show. . .and believe it or not, I think they're underrated. Sure, Emergency and I gets all the praise, but all their other work is pretty much on par with it.

This is all really bittersweet. Stupid to say, but thinking about all this is making me feel downright OLD. Fugazi needs to release a new, killer album, STAT. You see, when Fugazi changed directions with The Argument, they did it in a downright superlative way. Oh, Ian, I love you, even though you're apparently an asshole.

People slag on Elena's Tomb too much. That was ToD doing their very best impression of a hyper-aggressive SY. . .minus Intelligence, of course, which is pretty much brilliant (and not really a ToD song. It wasn't even re-recorded for the EP, just remixed and remastered from old tapes).

As far as the MOTIVATION for releasing Elena's Tomb, Conrad pretty much said on the old ToD forums that they really wanted a vehicle to get their videos to the fans all while delivering something new. So they basically threw together a few songs they put together while touring Source Tags. They ruled out doing a Peel Session EP since fans would've had those tracks from import singles. . .they wanted to give us something new. It's not their best material, but it did the trick. And it lowered our super high expectations for the next record without totally crushing our hopes. Listen to the skeletons of the songs on Elena's Tomb. . .they're all tracks that would benefit from a live jamming session. That's what they were written for.

A little. But Hail to the Thief has put me off from them almost completely.

Maybe they can make up for it with their next release. Until then, Super Furry Animals is the best band in all of Britain.

You know, I'm a bit disappointed there's not much fist-pumping fury on this album, but songs like "Worlds Apart" just make me so pumped in a different way. Wonderful album.

Just curious, what of SFA's output have you heard? I'm just curious as to why you dismissed them as though they're a joke like Coldplay or something.

Every post I've mad in this thread has been a hideous derail, and I apologize for that. But I'm just curious.
