Android Gaming Thread New OP

Started playing mega mall story yesterday, bought it a long time ago but never got around to playing it. I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but progressing in the game takes forever. Trying to accumulate hearts to get new plans takes so long, I end up leaving the game running and walking off so I don't have to spend hours staring at the screen.

Still, it won't put me off Kairosoft. Cafeteria Nipponica or Dungeon Village, which one should I get next?

Hey guys, my gf got a Samsung Note and now we're looking for some good, free games! Can anyone recommend us some or link us to a good list please? :) It'd be greatly appreciated :) she's enjoying endless runners like temple run or atm Samurais vs Zombies, but really anything not too strategy-heavy would be appreciated :) Just found Robotek... Thanks in advance!
I recommend buying games. The free games will either have adverts or be designed around making you pay for in-game items.

Yep, and considering the price point for games, it's really a no brainer.
Although I do believe that the most of the free app versions (Created either monetizing every element or ad support) still gives a decent 'demo' before you buy.

There's quite a few doom ports for Android, isn't there? I use DoomGLES, it works fine. Xperia Play controls work great too.

Oh right, totally forgot Doom is open source :P. I don't own it though. But now I'm gonna look for some other open source stuff.

Edit: Whaaa?! Hexen is on GooglePlay? Why oh why can't I access it from here ): 'least it's open source. Totally own the thing on steam too, so this can be taken care of in a nice and legal manner :D
Too bad I have no god damn idea as to how I would compile it and stuff

Yes absolutely. No need to buy first if there's a free version available to try, I just appreciate games which don't nickel and dime for for content.

I'm seeing a far higher paid:free ratio than I expected with my game. I thought it would be about 1:100 but I'm actually at about 1:9 total and yesterday was 1:5.

My game Blast Ball just released onto android. You can check it out here:

There was also a really awesome review of it on eurogamer for the iPhone version yesterday:

So horribly addictive.. in a good way. Not like heroin.
Funky tune too! Nice work sir.
Controller support or mapable hardware buttons would be a bonus... but since im able to use my ps3 controller on my sony tablet id like that in (almost) everything now! haha!

My game Total Pool has just been updated to include play against an AI opponent.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.friendlymonster.totalpool

Woo nice!

If your thinking of future updates UK 8 ball has so many rule variations, it might be a nice feature to be able to tweak them (non movement of the cue ball, one shot carried, naming of the pocket on the black, free ball, etc... maybe add in a chalk feature ie : if you forget to chalk the cue your shot goes all fucky) Just throwin some ideas your way. Its great as is :)

Cheers, I'm heavily invested in improving it further. I did think of having rules be adjustable, but they're already extremely complicated and was also worried that having a few being optional would only highlight further the ones that aren't there (plus hopefully when it comes to online play they will have to be standardised).

Your chalk idea is hilarious, but sounds like it might annoy people! I tried to steer clear of miscues and the like.

online play

will we have to put money on the table for a go? ;)

I just remember Archer Mcleans pool on the Amiga and its funny squeaky chalking noises

with UK 8 ball you never play the same rules twice, everyone has a different set it seems. I could give you mine, the next mans will be different

Definitely not real money.

Maybe I should have this sound effect while the ai is thinking.

Yeah absolutely, best to just stick with the one (superior ruleset in my opinion) rather than head down that neverending rabbit hole.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it!
I'd like to add controller support, but it'll probably be awhile before I might get the chance. My only testing device right now is a busted droid incredible, and I can't really afford any new devices right now for testing :(

I've also just released a free version called Blast Ball Kickoff, which can be found here:

How are the n64 emulators (if any) on Android? Ignoring the onscreen controls, how do they play?

I have one called N64 Player and most games work well. Paper Mario is glitchy, though, the image keeps flickering for me. Haven't tried any of the other high-profile games as I only got it to check out the more obscure stuff that I never played originally. Controls are next to impossible, though. Don't even bother. Really need to have physical buttons or use an external controller via bluetooth or something.

Do NOT use N64 player, it's stolen open-source code from another developer (the original app is mupen64plus AE) and in breach of GPL.

Mupen64plus works ok but is a bit slow at the moment, but is being actively developed and will hopefully we the best option soon. The fastest emulator at the moment is N64oid, it's on the SlideMe market.

is there an arcade racer like Ashpaht 6 HD which actually runs smooth @60FPS on my galaxy note? Asphalt 6 is kinda cool but it's also stuttering like crazy...

Have you gotten the latest update? That supposedly improved things on a few devices.
Now for the note, I heard it's problem was it's GPU is by far not up to the massively increased resolution from the SGS-II.

Unfortunately, in it's quality, Asphalt 6 HD is a loner. Though I am a bit angry that the game completely autoscales, buy a fat Lamborghini, go back to bronze beginner cup... BAMM. Holy lowflying jet bronzeleagers, Batman.

Where did you read that about the note? I mean, I said this myself, but still I would be interested in another source.

Latest update, I don't know. Downloaded it from the Samsung store, there is no update avaialble, when I start the game it says "could not connect"...

Is there a way to control which apps can send push notifications, like the notification settings menu in iOS? Some of the free games are sending way too many push notifications - I could just uninstall them, but I'd rather just make it so they can't send notifications.

Awesome update, been playing the game a lot more now. I've beaten the AI twice now at 8 ball but can't seem to unlock anything beyond easy, Racks are just 1 one. Do they unlock at best of 3 only?
Yup, best of 3 only.

If anyone has the game and has issues with matches freezing (seems to be a rare issue) I would be really interested in hearing from you so I can try and get this sorted. Cheers.

Best strategy or hugely complex RPG that isnt star traders (or any of them from the same dev)? Tryin to find something that is just as good, haven't been able to yet.

So Angry Birds has always got a shitty rep here on GAF. It's mocked and used as an example of a game which is showing how stupid the mobile market is and "killing hardcore games".

I've been playing it for the last few days (yeah, way behind the times, I know!) and I'm honestly baffled why. Right now, all I can assume is the people who say this are either extremely anti-phone games, haven't ever played it, or both.

To me, it seems no different to a game like Peggle, a game which is almost universally loved by "gamers". I've managed to get three stars on all of the levels for the first two parts of the game, but as I'm progressing it's becoming quite damn hard and very much a respectable puzzle game. I can see some levels taking a lot of effort to get three stars on and I'm not ashamed to admit I've given up on a few already because I just couldn't figure out how to do it.

I honestly think if this game launched on Steam/XBLA etc it wouldn't have nearly as much of a bad rep as it does on GAF, because it's a damn good game.

I will say I wish they listed the requirements for getting three stars. It sucks I have to get two stars and then try to guess what the next threshold is to get three...

I really need to stop playing it to try out other games, but man, it's so tough not to load it up and try to perfect another level...

Space is pretty good and quite clever. Played through it and liked it. There is a certain randomness to it though.

Angry birds stuff.
It's a lot like Peggle. An essentially random mechanic with minimal player agency. You can't be bad at the game, you can't be good at it. Sheer attrition will get you the three stars. It tricks you into thinking you are acquiring skills since it takes a few goes to get that high score. This makes it incredibly accessible and surely has fed into its popularity. The reason Peggle isn't as hated it's that it isn't nearly as successful. The platform also has something to do with it as you say.

I don't think it's as random as you make out. Certain skills I've acquired definitely help me now I'm in the harder levels.

Of course there is a huge random element to it in regards of where the structure will fall etc, but I do think there's quite a bit of skill involved as well when you pick shots.

See? It worked on you too. That's what it's designed to make you think. Doesn't make it a bad game. This is why it's fun. We humans love ascribing meaning to chance, we love watching random patterns like slot machines.

It's very clever.

There have been loads of levels where I could do a certain move and the same thing happened every time which was key to getting three stars. Those moves allowed the more random ones to have a better chance of going in my favour. It's definitely a mix of luck and skill, but more luck.

There's a ton of games way better than angry birds on both Android and iOS. And the concept of angry birds isn't really new/revolutionary. Along with the stale game play, that's why I don't play it much. Space is a much better game because the game play is much more unique and interesting.

Are any of you lot into the star trader rpg game? I've read on many places that it's really complex and interesting once you get into it, but I'm having a real tough time getting started. Some kind of starting walkthrough would be awesome, if anyone knows of one.

It's not like Peggle at all. I can't comment on Space since I haven't tried it, but the original Angry Bird is a bad clone of a genre of game that's already been very popular on Flash gaming sites. I'll give credit to their design since it catches the attention of casual gamers, but in terms of gameplay it's a lot worse than all those games it directly copied from.

It's somewhat similar to Zynga ripping off Tiny Tower, except that the original (Crash the Castle?) has already been ripped off dozens times and there are way better clones.

I have a Transformer Prime coming on tuesday so I will be setting up shop in this thread - and i'll also make the generic call (that's probably been asked 1000 times):

What games should I get? I have an ipad... so ports for the most part aren't what im looking for. Strategy games would be my favorite touch control genre.

If you have a US note, then you have a sub par GPU unfortunately. Asking it to give you 60fps from a somewhat visually demanding game like asphalt, at a high res, is asking too much.

Are there any good first person dungeon crawlers on Android? I have been feeling like my phone has been lacking in that department lately.

Does anyone know if there are any good loot rpgs/dungeon crawlers in the store?

I have been playing Legends of Yore and it is fun, I was just wondering what else was out there.
I'm really not a big android gamer, but all the rpg-style games I've played have pretty shoddy. The roguelikes are pale, shallow imitations of better games (except for Slash'em I guess) and something like Cyberlords just led me to wish that I was playing Syndicate or Shadowrun instead.

So here's what I did.

1. Buy Dosbox Turbo. Don't get adosbox, because it runs slower, doesn't support game profiles and doesn't support absolute mouse tracking.

2. Go get an awesome dos game, that let's you control with mouse only, like Might and Magic 1-5.

3. Play that shit.

Yeeeah, that's what I'm talking bout.

We've just released a game I've had the pleasure of working on as the designer. Would appreciate your thoughts. It's free so there's no risk involved ;) You can get it HERE.

Thanks!

Delver is a bit odd, it seems like it wants to be a roguelike with permadeath and all but it doesn't randomize the dungeon so it gets repetitive quick.

A game about controlling a big, slow battleship like those in Starfarer or SPAZ would probably work well with touch controls but is there such a thing for Android or even iOS? I'm thinking that an old PC game called Stratosphere: Conquest of the Skies would also work well cloned on phones (the original developer is long dissolved I believe). A big, lumbering flying fortress should be controllable with touch easily.

Whats the sms permissions for?

Microtransactions. They're not necessary though, and you need to confirm your purchase about 200 times before it goes through ;) If you're not jonesing for avatars, you can easily get enough virtual currency to buy everything in the game a couple of times over.

^ installed, looks good!

Thanks! As PR-speak as it may sound, we really take feedback seriously, so don't hesitate to let me know if you run into any problems.

K I just might put that in the description cause I'm guessing a number of users will either ask about it or post low star reviews asking why its needed.

Also just for my curiosity, so sounds like the sms system is some separate way than the standard google in-app purchases?
