Android Gaming Thread New OP

They have added to the market description since yesterday stating it wont work on rooted devices.. kinda shitty for the people that bought it before

I don't have an Android device but I'm just wondering does that mean if you have a rooted device you're forced to pirate it?

Great job SE! You try and stop people pirating the game by preventing rooted phones playing it... Except it's been patched by pirates already so you have only lost sales and pissed off a very large percentage of android users (who now only have the choice to pirate it).

Do you even have to root an Android phone to feed it pirated games?

You don't need a rooted device to install pirated apps. You can side-load them via USB or SDCard and all you need to do is tick an option under settings that allows the installation of non-market apps. A lot of devices (such as the Kindle Fire) were released with this option hidden in an attempt to prevent piracy, among other things.

On the flip-side though, you do need root access to actually pull the .apks from the device's system/data/etc partitions and, well, "distribute" them.

By the way, piracy severely frowned upon 'round these parts. Tread lightly in the subject.

Yeah I know, I'm just wondering if that's even a useful criterion to determine a potential pirating. The only time I dealt with APKs was with some indie bundle that included Android games. Well, wouldn't be the first DRM that looks at completely wrong things to block access.

Nope. Airdroid supports copying APK's from your phone on non-rooted devices. I use it often when I'm copying old non-market apps from my phone to my tablet.

It's already out.

It's probably incompatible with your device if it isn't showing up.

If it is listed incompatible, maybe try out Amazons app store?

I have a GSIII.

It's fucked up how I couldn't find it on my phone by typing the search term "Rayman Jungle Run." Yet, on the online/web store -- as you've linked me now -- it shows up fine. Thanks! c:

Why not try the Amazon App Store then? Otherwise don't be too sad, it's not the next coming of Jesus or anything :D

That and a willingness to install software that's likely been modified with dubious malware. We've had at least one person suffering from that around here.

Seriously.

Yeah, I'm not sure why you'd bother considering what's available on Android anyway (most stuff is free to pay anyway and the few games that cost money to buy and are good are usually by basement developers that need all the money they can get and even then it's like 2€ at most). The app situation here is bad enough already, don't make it worse!

It's still completely idiotic to use replaced firmware as some sort of "piracy detector".

I guess in addition to recommending good games we should also warn people of duds.

So my dud of the day is Air Navy Fighters. The developers previously made F-18 carrier landing, a whole game about the worst part of any air combat game. It shows. In addition to having way more simulation detail for the landing process (the game has no rudder at all but it lets you activate air brakes, flaps and whatnot in a whole different control screen) than any part that actually matters it makes you land a LOT. Like a mission consists of shooting four things in the most boring fashion possible (you just fly closer until it's marked red, you hardly have to point at what you want to shoot with a missile) and then a landing. Or another mission consists of shooting down a helicopter, then landing on an airfield before taking off again and landing on a carrier. I haven't managed landing once, it seems rather arbitrary about when it allows your wheels to touch the ground and when it just kills you so I just consider a mission successful if I've smashed the plane into the airstrip. Missile dodging also seems to consist only of spamming your unlimited flares.

The other two I didn't like today were Puppet War and Solar Warfare, mostly because they don't support my Xperia Play's controls (ANF does but it's rather inconsistent with how e.g. the right trigger works, whether it switches to missiles or to landing mode). SW is the worse of the two because it uses tilt controls and I don't know what kind of environment some devs of portable games think portables are used in but tilt controls fail utterly when you're on a train or in a car which is the primary use case for portable games.

Anyway to access other region Play stores? I'm tired of waiting and want to play FF Dimensions already, well the prologue part that is free. No matter how hard I try to go to Google play Japan I get boot back to the American store. Sometimes I even get the US store with Japanese text.

Google "MarketEnabler" and set your carrier to DoCoMo.

Get a Japanese SIM card if you do not want to root your phone. I think that's how they detect it.

Funny, since that's how you install the amazon market on phones.

So Nisa is only localizing the iOS version of the neptunia app?

Also any word on Monster Hunter Massive Hunting?

I'd like to know about Neptunia as well. I'm not buying another iPod after my 2G became obsolete and unsupported in -one- generation.

Guardian Cross is also supposed to be iOS/Android and is also iPhone only at the moment. Ugh :(

OMG, Chaos Rings finally came to Android!

OMG OMG OMG

EXCITED

I'm curious - do you think having the game as the free app will end up increasing sales for you? I've heard arguments on both sides of the fence.

I already own the game on the Play store, but it will be good to double dip "just in case."
I have no idea. To be honest I'm not expecting much but it can't really hurt to try. At the moment I get 0-2 sales on Amazon and 5-10 sales on Play per day. The vast majority of my income comes from ads on my free Snooker game on Google Play. I've also been offered to have Total Snooker as a free app of the day but am holding off to see the response from this.

And cheers for the sale!

I decided to pick up Total Pool at the Amazon App Store, because I do like to show some support of NeoGAF's own.

Wasn't going to pick up it until I saw this. Always up for supporting GAF.

I supported the guy by actually buying his game way back when he posted about it.

Yeah still not quite sure how it's supporting me, but I asked for it! So thanks.

I got 103k downloads on the day from Amazon, Google Play sales for Total Pool went from 3 to 8, obviously yet to see the impact on Amazon sales but not expecting much.

If things don't get better on Amazon soon I'll be taking my apps off there.

I emailed ubisoft regarding this issue. This was their response:
Unfortunately we cannot guarantee compatibility with every device at the moment, I have highlighted this incompatibility through the appropriate channels for processing. Your device may be compatible in a future update, however we cannot say this for certain, nor can we provide a date on this.

If you have any further queries or issues please do not hesitate to contact us again and we will assist you further.

Link to your play store page? I'd like to see what other apps you've made.

Just in case this hasn't been posted before, the Play store now has a wishlist function which is pretty handy.

This is a game changer. Goodbye MarketMarks.
