There's actually a GSM version in production, as well
Hooray! Not that it matters again since I'm in contract with Rogers. Either way, XDA will work some Magic on my Magic if they can pull their heads out of their asses.

good shit.

I was expecting a higher processor speed in the droid. Makes me feel less bad about not getting it on sprint. And even more happy about the hero purchase. I am not missing out on much its seems. Droid is a really nice phone though.

The android revolution is coming!!!

I am interested to see how these stand up to sprint plans with free calling to all mobile phones. Maybe tmo has something up their sleeve. Your post points to the plans being better than they seem. Also since the cats out of the bag tmo really should just push up the plan explanation at least. Don't want misconceptions they need to release something official.

True, but they're sticking to their guns on this one. To be fair I don't think its the "upset" we were told it was going to be. But, you'll see it'll be pretty significant. I'm actually excited from a plans and customers perspective. You gotta think big with these things. A trend I'm noticing, and of course is catching on to here cause we're all techie geeks is that the carriers are rolling out all these new devices and stuff. And as awesome as new devices are, not everything is a WOW must have item thats going to penetrate the market. What I can say for now is that this is a start of a different direction where T-Mo is trying to target a wider audience than just the techies. Not to say that we're not having some awesome new devices for 2010 either, just saying.

Wait... Wow.. watch this:

Like I explained earlier, an ARM Cortex can probably go toe-to-toe with the 800 MHz ARM11 in the Samsung Moment. Maybe not, but it's definitely much faster than anything on the market right now. It's just a more optimized chip, both in terms of speed and power consumption; the latter will probably be the Moment's Achilles' heel.

The original spec called for a 600 MHz ARM Cortex powering the Droid, however, that was probably scaled back by 50 MHz to improve battery life - according to Motorola's official specs, the Droid can go for 6 hours and 40 minutes of continuous usage. Even if that doesn't include 3G, EDGE, or Wi-Fi, just the screen being on for that amount of time continuously is pretty huge, and far outclasses all the Android phones on the Market right now.

So speaking of this, how has the processor been treating you with the Hero? Showed my wife the Hero today when I saw the prices that you guys are posting for Sprint and it's making my wallet cry with AT&T. If Sprint would buy out my contract I'd switch today.

The Hero looks pretty nice, and if I bought a Sprint phone today, I'd probably lean towards that, but in several months time when our contract is up, no telling what they'll have at that point. I'm just wanting something that is going to go smoothly between apps, watch Youtube videos easily, check and send email, access and edit Google docs and calendar, browse various Android apps or games, etc..

with all the complaining about 500mhz processors, you'd think the ARM whatever (I'm not a techie, leave me alone) would be slow. it's not. The hero is very quick to change between "desktops" (there's 7) and switches between apps smoothly and easily. snapping back to the "home" screen is never a problem.

Sense UI absolutely makes this phone. I'm not kidding. I went in to look at it, thinking I was going to wait on the moment (800mhz processor, due out later in the month) and said screw it and dropped the cash.

I bold all of this because it is 100 percent true.

Every time this thread pops up to the top I'm tempted to pick up an Android phone. I love my iPhone 3gs, but nothing beats a truly open system. It's going to be hard deciding which one to go with if I switch. I really like what I've seen of the Droid, but if I'm switching carriers I'd much rather save $30 a month on my phone bill then keep it roughly the same.

Archos super-fanatic Charbox posted a video showing him using the Archos 5 IT (heavy use, I might add), and...

Wow. The resistive touchscreen is very, very responsive - if this was the only thing I'd seen of the A5IT, I would have truly thought it was capacitive.

Secondly, the accelerometer-based reorientation is hella fast! I was blown away. Less than half a second.

But, as I said with the Dell tablet, no Android Market is killer. Skittleguy (or anyone), you peruse XDA, have they produced an Android Market .APK yet? Or something I can use to get the Market on one of these tablets. The SSD/Flash version is just jaw-dropping. I still have my misgivings about they way Archos stitched their own OS next to Android for media, and a 3G option would have been nice, but the video relieved a lot of my apprehension about this thing. It's a multitasking Android beast. I cannot live without my Google apps though.

I believe Vending.apk can be extracted and ported from rom to rom, since it relies little on the framework.

There's AndAppStore too. They have a downloadable client here.

There's also SlideMe, but it's a lot smaller.

Sorry, is this new?

Full Motorola Droid Specs Leak Before Announcement

As we know, the Droid is a sideways slider similar in basic shape and function to the CLIQ. It has a full QWERTY keyboard hidden under its touch display.

The Motorola Droid will run Android 2.0, with EVDO Rev. A on board for super fast 3G. GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and USB 2.0 will help it connect to whatever you can think to connect it to. The whole thing is powered by a 550MHz processor, which is only a small bump up from the 528MHz processors running the current crop of Android phones.

The screen will measure a whopping 3.7 inches, with WVGA (480 x 854 pixels) resolution. It will have a 16:9 aspect ratio. Nice. The device will measure 2.4 x 4.6 x 0.5 inches, and will weigh in at 6 ounces.

The camera rates 5 megapixels and has image stabilization, dual LED flash and autofocus. It can capture DVD-quality video (720 x 480 pixels) at 24 frames per second. The phone will be packed with a 16GB microSD card, which is quite generous.

On the messaging side of the equation, it has support for Exchange, Gmail, POP3/IMAP, SMS, MMS, IM and visual voicemail. All this, and over-the-air syncing. Motorola claims up to 270 hours of standby time and 6 hours, 25 minutes of talk time on the 1400 mAh battery. Not bad, but the CLIQ didn't live up to its claimed talk/stand-by times.

Of course, it will integrate with many of Google's services, such as Maps, Search, Talk, Voice, Contacts, Calendar, Gmail and the Android Market.

Holy crap I just got to the part where he hooks it up to an HDTV and Bluetooth mouse for web browsing and 720p HD MKV video playing. Must... resist... until next year's model...

I know about those two, but being a Google fanboy nothing would quite compare to the "official" distribution store.

If I can get Vending.apk to work on this, I just might say screw it and get it. No monthly fees for Android would be great~

Please, can someone recommend me a phone?

I essentially need a new phone, an mp3 player, and a digital camera.

I'd like decent speakers so I can play my music at work without headphones and at least a 3 MP quality camera with a flash as powerful as a regular camera (there will be lots of pics in clubs and dark places).

I have large hands so I'd prefer it to have a keyboard but it's not a deal breaker as long as the touch typing works for me.

And I don't want to break the bank.

Is there anything out there that has that? Or am I asking too much?

I'm with Verizon.

Thanks

It's as if the Droid was made for you.

Edit: You sound like an advertisement, btw.

Wait to see what Droid offers. It's only a couple weeks away. :)

The whole "capacitive is omg amazing!" and "resistive screens are total crap" are pretty much a myth perpetuated by writers on tech blogs (esp. engadget) who have no clue what they are talking about.

It's more sensitive, sure, but resistive tech has also improved quite well.

The only Android phone that Verizon has, or will have for the recent future is the Droid as others have said, so there you go. If you like what it has to offer, go for it. Looks like a pretty nice phone!

The HTC Desire spotted with Verizon branding, so it might be coming out a few months after the Droid.

i'm in the market for a new phone and I really am having a hard time choosing between an android phone like the Droid or the HTC Leo which will run winmo 6.5.1 and will be upgradeable to winmo 7 next year. Both are incredible devices but in my eyes the Leo is just so awesome and I really like the open nature of Winmo and what is being done over at xda-developers with the platform, but at the same time I do have my doubts because MS hasn't shown Winmo 7 yet and that's going to be the dealbreaker for me.

Primarily I want my phone for voip with a good sip client and for mobile internet, gaming and applications would also be a bonus. I was going to go with an iphone but after doing my research I have decided that apart from the insane amount of apps and games it really isnt my thing.

I hate to ask annoying questions but i'm going to do it anyway :):

a) how is web browsing on the android?
b) is there good sip clients for android?
c) what's the app marketplace like these days?
d) any decent games on android?

thanks for your help, i greatly appreciate it!

desire is looks very close to the hero.

thanks for that, Android sounds great and that it really looks like it is coming into its own, it will be certainly a hard decision to make!

Thanks for the suggestion guys but I wasn't specifically looking for an Android phone.

But the Droid, are there any details on how powerful the "flash" is. My cell phone has a weak ass flash.

Dual LED. Should be bright.

And why ask for a suggestion in the Android thread if you weren't looking for an Android phone? Shame!

This is an android thread. There's gotta be a general cell phone thread around here.

I haven't read or seen any info on the camera yet besides it being 5mp and does pretty well in the dark.

We love the build quality of this phone. It’s mostly metal, and while it’s heavy, it gives you a reassuring quality feel that you just don’t find much nowadays as handsets get thinner, lighter, smaller, and cheaper.

I like that. My iPhone 2g has a heaviness to it that I love.

:D :D :D

This thing is practically a MID with a keyboard and phone functionality. I love it. Still a little off-put by the two blank keys, but wow. Wow wow wow. Please be heavily subsidized.

This might come as a shock to many, but the Motorola Droid has the best battery life out of any Android device we’ve ever tested... Motorola recently made a boo boo and let the Droid appear on their website, and official battery times are: 6.5hrs of continuous usage (phone + web + email + anything else, continually) or around 270 hours of standby time.

270 hours standby?!? This thing is ridiculous!

They mentioned improved media support in Android 2.0... Seeing how this thing is 16:9, I would love it if stuff like DivX or MKV was supported officially.

motorola-droid-preview-11.jpg

On the left: the past. On the right: the future.

So will the Motorola Droid be successful? Absolutely, we think. It will eat in to BlackBerry sales, Windows Mobile sales, and positively murder any lingering Palm Pre sales. It’s that good. Did you notice how Verizon still hasn’t announced the BlackBerry Storm2?

Wow. This thing is gonna toss the status quo for sure.

Only if it comes to other carriers :-/

I hope it's not exclusive for too long, Verizon is too rich for my blood.

Well, we know a GSM version is coming, along with a keyboardless version, so there's more than a chance it'll be on another carrier.

Even still, it's on the largest network in America, and that could very well give it the edge it needs.

VanMardigan said:
:lol

How long have you been waiting to say that? Don't blow your load that quickly, big guy.

I admit I've been biting my tongue for a while but this preview definitely did push me over the edge (in more ways than one :o.) So, please excuse that statement. :D

Objectively though, I don't think anyone can argue with the hardware specs. Maybe with Android, maybe with sales, but those specs are definitely best-in-class.

It’s crisp, sharp, vibrant, bright, and really, really responsive. It’s almost iPhone-level in terms of the capacitive touch

The Droid isn’t an iPhone competitor because nothing at this point in time is an iPhone competitor besides the new iPhone.

The past caught up with the future. :lol

At the "almost" statement, not having pinch-to-zoom does still hurt a bit, I'm sure.

At the "sales" statement, see my previous comment. ;)
