Android Hardware Thread - 2009 Edition

Well since this is an Android thread I'm gonna recommend that. The MyTouch running 1.5 achieves feature-parity with the iPhone, however there are still some caveats. It doesn't have as much polish overall as the iPhone (yet), and the Android Market has about 11% as many apps as the App Store (though this gap is closing, slowly.) The things you mentioned, Web, Shazam, Facebook, PDAnet and GPS are all there. Some may even have homescreen widgets so you don't need to constantly open and close apps- just turn the screen on and bam, instant info.

* post loaded with a healthy dosing of fanboyism, but also includes distilled truth
You've sold me. I'm calling AT&T tomorrow. I'm going to ask them to give me the iPhone 3GS at the full discount, or I walk. They probably won't cave, so I'll probably be closing my account of 8 years and switching to T-Mobile. It'll be $310 for T-Mobile, unless I get them to waive activation. My monthly bill will be $15 less. All else is the same, except now I'll have unlimited text versus only 200 or so. PEACE.

I actually kinda like the Android green / white color scheme. It's different.

I'm glad there's more Android phones coming out. More phones = more people familiar with Android.

I can't decide if the Tatoo is nice or ugly. I'm leaning to ugly since it's only so -so in a promo shop.

The LG phone would be perfect if the screen was bigger.

Eh, it's a decent size, thankfully (and more importantly) it looks to be HVGA.

sorry to ask a probably tired question, unfortunately i don't have much time to browse the thread, but does sprint/will sprint have any android phones? they look pretty cool

Sprint's Instinct is now a line of phones, upcoming being the Instinct HD and the Instinct Q. Instinct Q is Android. QWERTY slider, it's another "ok" looking phone. I'm really waiting for Android hardware to blow me away. That's why I'm so excited for the HTC HD rumor...that would be instabuy.

Man, there have been a lot of announcements with all these Tattoos and whatnot. I currently have a G1 on T-Mobile and my wife (starting from yesterday :) needs a data-capable phone since she's working her job and going to grad school part time. Staying in touch and on top of things will help her.

So I'm considering getting the MyTouch, but I read that it was a little gimped RAM-wise when compared with the Euro and possibly Canadian versions. Is this a big deal? I was planning to root it and try a Hero ROM on it. I'm pretty experienced by now, messing around with various ROM builds on my G1.

Is it worth waiting a while for other Android devices that will be available on T-Mobile? I don't want to wait more than 1-2 months.

Thanks.

Wait until at least this Thursday when Motorola unveils their Android phones. At least one will definitely be on T-Mobile.

As far as RAM, the T-Mo version is the same as the G1 in that department, so if you are fine with the G1's speed with ROMs, then you'll have no problems with the MyTouch.

Rogers, get this model and I might give you money.
But it's just the Magic without a chin! And if we're lucky then us Canucks will be getting Sense in October or something.

Well, I like the Magic-design but, on the other hand, I think Hero's UI is better and more integrated. That is why a Magic-style Hero looks most appealing to me. I am not exactly sure what that Sense thing is you're talking about though. Enlighten me !

Motorola event tomorrow! :D

Can't wait.

Plz have Sholes. :(

I hope they show something cooler than Sholes and that odd little mini Rumor looking slider.

Sholes looks pretty nice design-wise but the leaked pictures don't seem to do it any favors. I'm looking forward to some nice video and maybe even a carrier announcement.

T-Mobile has the myTouch for $99 with promo code KICKOFF24. Some promo for Oprah, I guess. I am glad I waited until today. I still have to call AT&T, and then I want to see what Motorola offers for their T-Mobile and AT&T phones. I trust the promo code should work all tomorrow, so I should have some time to think about it. AT&T just got too damn greedy with the iPhone. :( PEACE.

It's essentially what makes the Hero look like the Hero (the UI).

Would the code work on a one-year contract buy?

Wow. SO GLAD I waited!

Unless something is announced that is totally crazy awesome tomorrow, I'm doing this. Hawt.

Plus the hero has a standard headphone jack. The non standard jack on the magic kills it for me, otherwise i would go for the magic.

This kinda relates to the thread and may sway some to become HEROES.

Sprint is planning to lower their everything plan to .........$70/month.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/sprints-big-surprise-to-be-unlimited-calling-data-text-and-m/

Unlimited text, mms, data, minutes for half of what every other carrier is charging.

Holy shit, the Hero is looking to be the best phone deal on the market this year.

The unlimited is to all mobile phones, so the $69.99 plan still has 450 minutes, they will just only be used to landlines.

Still an awesome deal, but I wanted to clear that up.

I think so. You can always give it a try. I stumbled on it randomly last night. I ended up making the purchase. It is simply too good a deal to pass up. I can get this phone for $100 now, and then a new one at XMas when I hope better hardware shows up. Thanks guys. I'll be part of this thread more now. :) PEACE.

I don't know what you're looking for in a device, but Sholes form factor looks nice and I want a device with actual buttons I can press. Touch screen horse shit is nice as a novelty; but more often than not after the third fucking press with nothing happening I have to restrain myself from launching my iPhone into a wall.

why the hell hasnt any sholes info leaked for the moto event today....they best show it!

There were a round of rumors that Sholes may not be shown today. I hope this isn't the case, but if it isn't shown we were warned. :(

I really want a new phone. I have a Rumor right now, but I can't wait until March when my plan expires.

I think I may do the Sprint $70 unlimitied plan with a Hero if that is still around by then! 2 years is so damned long! I wish there were a way to get the new plan and a Hero today!

You are correct. Practically, though, I think the only time I ever call landlines is when I need to call a business. Every one of my friends and family have transitioned to cell-only.

The Cliq or however they're spelling it is really nice. I'm amazed that it's the bright phone we saw months back, it looked lame before and beautiful now. I especially love that there are only three buttons under the screen...the cluster of buttons on the myTouch are uncalled for and don't contribute to the ease of use in my opinion.

So congratulations Tmo Android fans. Still not the answer to my request, as it has no wifi and low to no intenal storage. It's one of the best looking Android phones yet though, that's a plus.

Motorola Announces MOTOBLUR - A Social Network Powerhouse
Picture%201.png

Motorola s just announced Moto Blur, an Android based UI that places a large emphasis on social networking. From what we know so far, Moto Blur is:

* A set of social networking widgets
* Deep integration of social networking services into the Android OS
* Online backup, restore, and remote wipe
* Integrated contacts and email ala Synergy

The service looks to be very compelling. You have Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace statuses all updateable at once and also populated everywhere on the device. Getting a call? See their latest Facebook profile photo and their latest Facebook status (or Twitter, or whatever) pop up as the Caller ID. Tap on a contact and see their entire social network history right within the address book. It's a very comprehensive take on all your social networks.

Furthermore, it looks like it'll be a joy to use--HTC Sense watch your back.

159476.jpg

In addition, Moto Blur offers an online backup service that allows you to log in and track your phone's location if you lose it, and then remotely wipe it if it's clear that it's gone astray.

The first device to take advantage of Moto Blur will be the T-Mobile Click in the US. More on that in a moment!

Not bad. I still want the Hero on T-mobile USA. For all the talk about Sprint losing market share, they seem to manage to get two of the best phones in the market (Pre, Hero).

Yeah one blog said it had no wifi. As far as memory I think memory cards are lame and slow in my experience. Does Android allow you to save apps on the card or is that still only an option for rooted phones?

If that's the only issue since wifi is there than it's not a huge issue but its still settling for me. Screen should be bigger as well.

Looks fucking amazing though. Really awesome looking phone and motoblur looks very nice.

Contacts have seen the new Motorola Android Phone, and all feel the phone is extremely well designed, and probably may be a winner. Contacts tell us that it is slimmer than iPhone, capacitive touch screen seems more precise than iPhone and feels faster than iPhone. The native processing of code on Motorola is much faster than anything out there.

You know, in the back of my head I kept expecting this handset to be crippled in at least one major way, but I can't find it here. There's still five missing puzzle pieces though: CPU speed, RAM, interior storage, price, and date, but from what I've seen so far, I think this is going to be the best hardware keyboard-packing Android phone for a while.

Hard to believe it was about a year ago at one of these September conferences that the G1 was revealed. :) What great progress Android has made in just a year.
