To put it bluntly, no, AT&T has not announced any plans for Android. There's a couple rumored phones for it, but nothing likely to come out soon, except for maybe the Dell Mini 3i, which is a bit of a gimped phone.

yeah that's how it's been the last few times i've looked. guess i'm gonna have to switch to verizon or t-mobile or something. i wish people would stop with this stupid exclusivity bullshit.

What happens with apps that are coded to take advantage of the standard res? How do they scale to the higher res screens of the moto?

If their target API level is still 3 (Android 1.5), they won't appear in the Market. I don't know if they'll run or not.

If their target API level is 4 (Android 1.6) though, they'll be upscaled and the OS will do its best to make it display correctly.

I will probably start doing some development in the next month. gotta find something that i would find useful.

What's there that ckohler hasn't done? PMs?

I use the NeoGaf WebApp whenever I'm not near my PCs, but I have not had much use for PMs...yet.
A dedicated NeoGaf App, that supports ads (for the sake of the website) would be awesome.

Ugh the Cliq looks like a Toy. I would really like a sophisticated Android phone to come out on T-mobile. Anything like that in the pipeline?

I disagree.

The Samsung Behold II is the other one set to come out. I have it on good faith one or more may also be coming before the year is over, but those are the only two in the light right now.

Posting from my hero. Today was the first time i really used the browser alot. The browser is snappy and it has handled evey page well. Good.stuff. Android.ftw

Hands On

I think its ugly.

I think HTC has set the bar for Android phones, in that phones without a UI overlay will probably get generally ignored if there is the option for Blur or Sense or anything else.

Truth i showed my friends the hero and a lot of them are not really power users but would not consider getting an android device because they were not impressed with the ui. They all love sense ui.

It's actually interesting that the processor sucks, since it's forced people to try and push it to the limits. What's resulted is the incorporation of BFS into Android kernels by Cyanogen, an idea that's popular enough that Google is actually incorporating it into the source.

Which is completely awesome and validates both root users and Google's trust of them.

Anyways, Eclair has arrived at the Googleplex! The chips just keep on falling in the Sholes' favor.

I think this is odd because Cupcake and Donut were put up at the Googleplex a while after Google officially announced 1.5 and 1.6, respectively. We have heard absolutely nothing official on 2.0, and we haven't heard of Eclair officially since some Android team members mentioned it in the list of Android trunks at Google I/O.

I wonder why 2.0 is coming so soon; for now, I doubt it will have the UI upgrade I was hoping for.

Ok, so I jumped the gun and decided to order the HTC Hero from the sprint website.

It's probably common knowledge, but yesterday i was going to order it, filled out the pages, then cancelled, and got a "But Wait! $50 off your invoice credit" offer. I wasn't sure if it was just a random offer, but still wanted to wait until found out i was going to get some money that is owed to me back for certain. So once I got confirmation today, I did the same thing, filled out everything, cancelled, got the same retention offer, and went ahead with the purchase.

Yay $50 rebate! That's what made it so appealing for me when I got my Magic through Rogers.

Also, WTF at Eclair? Donut is JUST out, so why?

Indeed.

Also, according to the description on those Eclair vids, they were taken and uploaded using an Android phone. Which Android phone, Dan Morril has left up to speculation.

Anyways, something interesting from Verizon's Twitter:

@dao777 That's right! Have a great day.

Certainly feels like we're accelerating towards some sort of announcement soon. Maybe in the next couple days, if I allow myself to be that optimistic.

My girl has an LG Vu from AT&T and really wants a new phone. I hate her Vu and it's infuriating capacitive screen. Software sucks as well, no threaded messaging, just shit phone. I showed her the myTouch at the mall and she really liked it. Her contract doesn't end till next year, so here's +1 for a future Android user. :D

The Hero is an awesome phone. Doesn't fit my personal tastes but I'm not surprised people are into it.

So, it is still a rumor but it's too interesting to ignore.

This unconfirmed memo from Nexus404 says what Project Black isn't: A phone. It also claims Black is a turnaround plan with "blazing speeds" "3x" the competition and phones from hot makers ("Nokia #1 and Samsung #2"). WTF.

All the employees who received the information were required to sign confidentiality agreements. Each sector has received it at different times, the bulk of them actually received it the 13th, after most of the information was already leaked (Although it's not entirely accurate…)

That said, the Project Dark is not any ONE thing..its a term for a company TURNAROUND; Last to First is what some like to say. It's an all inclusive "package" that includes blazing speeds, 3 times faster than anyone will have on the market for years. Phones people actually WANT, using top of the line models from the top 2 cellphone manufacturers in the world (Nokia #1, and Samsung #2). Hot software like Android. And European priced packages.

And all of this will make Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint's head spin when its released faster than anyone can have time to finishing reading any official press releases.

330 Million in new networks Verizon? Try nearly 10 billion.

Newest source

I really hope this is true. Not only will it give me a better option, being $50/month plan for Android on a fast network (we'll see...) but if it works, it'll have other carriers racing to improve as well. Part of me is just thinking I should ditch the Moment for the Moto Cliq and see if I can change my plan when/if this is announced.

Doesn't matter how fast it is if the coverage areas are so small only 1% of subscribers can access them...

Whatever Samsung is cooking will most likely run Android. I doubt Nokia's will run Android, but you never know I guess.

Read a review of the Cliq and yowza, was pretty harsh. Terrible battery life, apparently.

Plus it looks like social media overload, which turns me off, unfortunately.

Need an android phone, need it on T-Mobile (because g/f is on T-Mobile), annnnnd I kind of don't have anything to buy right now!

Yeah, Engadget's CLIQ review was not so glowing. They said that its vibration was so loud that you would need to turn it off when in class/meetings/movies. That's a dealbreaker right there.

FYI the Vu's screen isn't capacitive

Any concrete news on Touch HD2 coming to sprint? I cant wait to see the customizations that come along with it from the chef community. Im still amazed at the things they are doing with my first generation Touch, as its kept mine alive far longer than it should have been.

I can see this being true. While Tmobile is in last place here in the U.S. their parent company Deutsche telekom is one of the largest wireless companies in the world. While Verizon has 87 Million subscribers in the U.S. and ATT has 79 Million subscribers. T-mobile has 150 Million subscribers worldwide. And when Tmobile merges with Orange in Novermber they'll have 270 Million subscribers. It's about time they start flexing that muscle in the U.S. market. 10 Billion on a new highspeed network isn't a bad start.

The Gizmodo review is pretty good.

They also make note of the weak battery life saying you'll definitely need to charge it every night. That's not really an issue for me since that's what I have to do with my Sidekick now. And why wouldn't I just plug it in at night? I'd have a car charger too, if for some reason I needed to charge it on the go.

I've read a few "T-Mobile to buy Sprint" rumors in random comments on some Android news stories. Anything behind this at all? It sounds silly.

Hmmm I don't have any concrete news on that but Sprint has been going down for some time now and Tmobile has more than enough money so I wouldn't be surprised.

HTC... Quietly Brilliant?

As it was announced a few months ago, HTC is launching a $50M advertising campaign in the United States today. The first signs can already be seen on HTC’s US website which now sports a totaly new design:

http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2009/10/15/htc-launchs-us-advertising-campaign-is-quietly-brilliant/

It also covers winmo devices, but half of the clicks go to HTC Hero so eh. It'll be interesting to see what effect this has.

Oh, so it's happening. I remembered reading HTC wanted to become a known, popular brand to the masses and that they were going to embark on a campaign to do so. I doubt it'll change anything. I also think you can't just say ever phone is "You" for the description just because you can change the wallpaper.

Time is going by so slowly. I really want to play with the Moment to reassure myself that breaking my rule of no moving parts is justified.

Is it true that Sprint won't upgrade to 2.0 for a long time? Because that's really, really lame and I don't think I'll be able to handle having outdated software and seeing all these cool new features and enhacements I can't use.

Maybe Sholes is the winner, then.

Samsung has said 1.6 won't be coming until 2010, so 2.0 probably after that for the Moment.

HTC has not announced any 2.0 plans, but a rumor floating around now is 2.0 will be exclusive to the Sholes until Q2 2010.

Hey guys, just curious about how customizable the Android web browser is. I've been nothing but irritated by the lack of customization available in Safari. Namely simple things like turning off images when browsing, etc.

Also can you set Android to only join known wifi networks? I'm irritated by regular interruptions by my iphone finding nearby wireless networks.

Sorry if this is the wrong topic.

On the "with Google" devices, you can disable images while browsing. Also, you have to manually join a new WiFi network; only WiFi networks that are stored as "remembered" will be joined automatically.

I don't know about the non "with Google" devices since I have no experience with them.

Awesome, thanks. Just to clarify, if you come within range of a wireless network does the OS interrupt your current activity and ask you to join, or does it jus disregard the
until you manually add one?

Thanks again.

You can set notification on or off. PEACE.

EDIT: And notification is unobtrusive, even when on. A little icon pops up on the notification bar, and that's it. It's up to you whether to open the window and look. So I tend to keep notification on so I can get online quick in a pinch, if I'm near an open connection long. It only notifies of open networks too, which is also nice. I think my iPhone notified me for any wireless network.

Yeah, iPhone can be a fucking nuisance. I'll be at a stop light trying to load a map on AT&T's shitty fucking Edge network and the Iphone will interrupt, wasting my precious fucking seconds at the stop light, with HAY HAY HAY I FOWND A NETWORK CAN I JOIN IT HUH HUH HUH CAN I?!

Swear to god.

One month left and this fucking thing is out of my hair. :D

Notifications do suck on the iPhone but I thought you could set it to only join known networks.

Droid Dog threw a lot at the Hero to see what it could handle multitasking-wise, and I came away pretty impressed. He focused on the browsers performance, first without anything and then with widgets and other apps, including the music player. It did very well.

I'm not sure how many apps were running when I used it in the Sprint store but iPhone pinching is smoother, so that may have made me think it was slower and "laggier" than it actually was. It's not laggy when you pinch, just different as it reformats the text when you've finished pinching...I don't really notice when my iPhone reformats the text, it just does along the way. It's a very small thing now that I get it, but I still think I prefer the Moment! :D

Droiddog

Also, if anyone is having Hero battery issues, it's been traced to the SMS app. More on that.
