Android Wear |OT| 2nd Gen is Here

By the way, this is a must have watch face. I have it on my gear live but it doesn't look as cool without a round watch.

iGTQrGyvkOFgz.jpg

Haha neat. Should have known someone would create a watch face like that.

Do you know if BB has the 360's out on display?
In my area of Illinois yeah they're out on display. Managed to get my silver one after calling 4 stores and being told all were out of stock. Going in store and asking yields better answers and results

Just a heads up, if you're having trouble finding one of these online or at physical Best Buy locations you can go to a Best Buy and have them order you one and drop ship it to your house, regardless of whether or not it's in stock on their website. According to my receipt from earlier today my order should arrive on the 18th, while most Google Play orders won't ship until the 25th and the Motorola site has been sold out since the 5th.

God damn,

I just went to best but this morning and that watch is a thing b of beauty. 360.

Really difficult holding off to Christmas.

They're going to have it on display starting tomorrow. Best buy mobile stores already have it though.

Mine had both the silver and black one on display behind the cell phones. Regular best buy.

Thanks guys. I will try and stop by mine. I have small wrists and want to see how it looks up close.

There's a Best Buy Mobile within walking distance and I want to see if they have it on display, but I am so tempted to just drop money on the 360. Need to stay strong!

I really want one of these. But I'm not sure what to get. Maybe I should wait, too.

A lot of these it seems like are something that works with Android, but not something with Android on them. It would be neat to have something that could work with other Android things, but could also do stuff without it, too.

I'd like to be able to do something like watch videos on my watch. That would be so neat.

But I don't know how much I can do with them. I kind of like the idea of being able to use all the Android and Windows stuff on a watch. And the battery life. I kind of would like to just be able to leave it on rather than have to charge it all the time.

I will enjoy my watch very much in 7 years or so when the tech is mature enough. However, this first iteration has me very impressed for being, well, a first iteration! Can't wait.

Why would you want to watch videos on a tiny screen? You wrist would get tired.
I guess you're right.

Well, I mean, if it's on my wrist, it would be kind of neat having it there all the time.
And quick youtube videos would be fun and maybe wouldn't make my wrist tired. And I wouldn't have to worry about dropping it if it were on my wrist. I really like that.

Really hoping Moto can come up with a classy design that uses a fully circular (OLED) screen for their next iteration. And obviously a better, more efficient processor.

How much detail would you be able to make out? The screens are so small (and potentially round).

I put the Pebble Steel Black band on my black 360. Makes the watch look completely different and it adds some weight to it. I love the way it looks even more now.

Just got a 360! Will put the battery for a thorough testing tomorrow but so far it's pretty good. Trying to set it up was a pain though, as it just sits there on "just a minute" screen for what feels like forever. This system feels very fickle, but now that it's running and paired it feels great. Looking at my wrist for notifications feels so intuitive as well. It kind of felt weird to look at my phone in certain situations because I'm already accustomed to this more convenient watch

After the initial setup process, it's been pretty great. The install process does take a while, and even longer still if it tried to do update and fail while on low battery. I feared it wouldn't charge once I switched out the Moto X adapter on the cradle to the original one, but it worked fine. Charged to 100% and I've been using it since 130pm.

  • Sent off two voice-to-text messages
  • Sent two notifications to my phone for review
  • Jogged for an hour with runtastic tracking me, checking my heart rate several times, and controlling my music
  • Checked the clock a few times and

I'm at 37% at 7:00pm, so it could be better as I don't really consider that to be super heavy usage and more like "typical" usage. At least, with my schedule.

I'm currently at 30% and I've been unplugged since 730 am so approximately 12 hours and I've been fucking around with it all day.

I received 86 texts, replied to three via voice, received 12 emails, checked the scores of football games via okay Google 4 times, and checked out the Google now cards 6 times. I consider that pretty heavy use. It'll easily last me the whole day. And the charger cradle is so easy to throw the watch on, I don't mind Charing it every night.

Hmmm.. that's so odd you'd get so much more usage out of yours than in my situation. There are times where the watch will do nothing, i'll check it, and it's gone down 1% in a few minutes while in others, it seems to hold up well so I don't know what's causing what seems like inconsistent usage. Perhaps I'll look into whether anyone's made some type of battery-stats app for it.

[edit]

It's now 9pm and the battery has dropped to 31% and I haven't used it at all other than to check the battery just now.

it is kind of weird you're down to 37% in 6 and a half hours of moderate use. i probably do something with the watch around twice and hour and im at 50% after 9 hours of sitting on my wrist. and by "do something" i mean check messages, check heart rate, and look at cards/reminders. maybe runtastic is the one being battery heavy? i already have a good impression of how fast the battery charges though. i put it on the charger for 5 min and went up like 10%, which is crazy fast

It's 10pm now and its down to 27% so it seems a good 3-4% every hour with no use other than it being connected to the phone. I did notice a few notifications, but I don't imagine that would drain the battery since it's already connected anyway (as in, so long as the screen doesn't turn on). At least, I didn't notice it flashing on. You may be right in that Runtastic and heart rate sensors may have a high battery drain.

I wonder how much better OLED would have been for this battery size.

[edit]

2am and it's at 13%. So, 3-4%/hr is pretty accurate in terms of non-interactive or occasional "look at the time" discharging.

People like using their own watch bands so this would suck.

I think I could deal with not changing bands if it meant the product in the end was better. I would hope other people could feel the same. Like a week without charging versus charging daily would make me give up custom bands in a heart beat.

Just got my 360 today, haven't had much time to mess around with it yet but it sure is a pretty device.

I wonder how feasible it is to actually put anything useful like a battery or sensors in a flexible band.

MKBHD review for Moto360 is up.

-Screen resolution is kind of low but fine.
-Screen is pretty good in everything but direct sunlight. Better than the OLED displays.
-Battery life is "ok". With his 7am-2am day: Battery life ends up at 30% on moderate usage / 10% or less on heavy.
-Ambient mode being on/off is a big factor for battery. Probably won't get a whole day with ambient mode off (with it off, the screen only dims when not in use instead of turning off completely).
-Charges very fast.
-Charging dock is really cool. You can charge the watch with any wireless charger though.
-Software has some performance issues sometimes but nothing crazy. Mostly frame drops here and there. Not sure if it's software or hardware related.
-Overall positive. Says he thinks it's the best smartwatch available at the moment in his opinion.

Well the metal bands aren't totally flexible. They're links put together. The question is how thin can you get sensors and circuitry as well as mold a battery into the links of a band? Maybe they're too thick to not make it feasible, but otherwise I would think you could embed some of it in the band to make the whole thing a piece of tech, not just the body.

I wonder why they don't start incorporating the band to contain things to improve the watch. Is there a reason they can't design the band to also have a battery in it? Sensors?

That was an idea behind many of the "iWatch" concepts we saw in the lead-up to the Apple Watch unveiling. The short answer is that there isn't. The longer answer is that for fashion and cost purposes, the watchband is made as "cheaply" as possible so that they're easily replaceable.

That's the closest thing to that concept, in my mind, but mainstream ideas about what a watch could and should be would have to change.

Had it since Thursday and haven't had the time to explore it all too much. Loving it though. Still getting used to what gestures do what, but the battery life isn't as damning as everyone is talking.

I've had it on for 7 1/2 hours now and I'm at 75%. People complaining are using it as a damn smart phone is the problem. As a nice looking watch with some neat features and quick notifications it lasts more than a day. Dictating responses to text messages is fun and I've already used the stopwatch and timer functions a ton. Step counter is fairly accurate to my old Fitbit too.

Seems to be the same I'm getting since I seem to be averaging 3-4% every hour with non-use, except to check the time and the battery percentage. In fact, I'm keeping a small spreadsheet of the activities I'm doing to see what drains the battery the most (obviously things like navigation, considering the buzz and the screen-on notifications for every turn).

So far, I don't mind the battery life, really. I've been conditioned to expect that it will suck so I'm a little paranoid that I might burn through ti quickly (and the sole reason why I'm keeping track). I've only used it as I expect to use it and while watching it drop to sub 50% during the middle off the day feels like a lot, it's only because I'm adept at constantly charging my devices as soon as I get to work (it's easy when every device uses the same connection). The watch and its cradle are different for obvious reasons - that and I wouldn't want to take my watch off to charge it at work on a cradle anyway.

One thing I've noticed (and this is due to my Moto X's Touchless Control) is that saying "OK Google" on this watch is fast. I'm accustomed to waiting for the beep to indicate that it's listening, but with the watch, I don't reply quickly enough because it's ready to listen as soon as it detects me saying "OK Google." When I wait for Moto Voice to beep, that gives me time to re-think how I want to rephrase my question. It's not a bad thing at all. It's amazing how I'm instantly able to reply to text messages in this manner. It's probably because Motorola's implementation requires that it forwards my request to Google Now, which is a secondary step versus just accessing OK Google immediately.

So close to getting a 360 today. A Best Buy in between work and home said they had it in stock, but when I got there it turned out to be an error. Their computer says there is one in the store but talking to an employee in the know, no one knows where it is and it's been missing since they got their shipment of 4 watches total. She had apparently set one aside for herself when they first came in and when she came back 10 minutes later, 3 were sold and apparently a manager had taken the one she set aside which no one has seen since.

The battery life in the reviews were greatly exaggerated. I don't know how people had the watch dying in 12 hours. Ive been unplugged since 6 am (13.5 hours) and Im at 53% battery life left and its not like I haven't been using it.

Ive been getting texts and emails all day, and replied to three via voice, and even showed it off to some people by asking the watch what the weathers like lol.

Honestly its well worth the price. Definitely recommend a steel band though. Makes the watch look and feel even better.

It's 8 PM and UPS finally delivered my Moto 360 after several days of delays.

Anyways I'm very happy that it doesn't look extremely huge on my tiny wrists (my gear live feels the same size). The leather band also feels a lot better than the rubber one on my Gear Live.

LG G Watch end of the day battery. I left my house around 1:15PM and got home around 10:30PM. I would say this was moderate to heavy usage (checking constantly for new notifications, showing it off to friends so that included voice chat, and general playing around with it).

Pretty good actually. My phone died way before it and had to recharge it.

That's fantastic. My end-of-day totals for today are, after having it off the cradle since 10:30am, using it to navigate, respond to a few texts and open apps while driving is now 16% at 12:08am. By now I would be sleeping so it'll be o the cradle soon. I am envious of your battery life but today was more of a test to see if it would hold up to typical use and it lasted for sure.

In other news, Motorola finally updated their Touchless ControlsMoto Voice to work with the 360 in that, if the watch is connected, the phone will not respond to voice commands. I never had this issue at all considering the watch responds to "OK Google" and the Moto X requires that to be "OK Google NOW." Funny thing is, though it's been rebranded as "Moto Voice," the settings menu still lists it as "Touchless Control."

Seems unnecessary but after testing it, it does what it says. When the watch is on and listening, even if I were to say "OK Google Now," the phone will pop up with a notification toast saying "Your watch is listening, you should speak to it." And when the 360's screen is off, the Moto X will respond accordingly. But it still seems pointless as the phrases are different.

I'm guessing this is for people who are just used to saying the Moto X catchphrase rather than conform to Android Wear's default one.

Has there been any news regarding the SmartWatch 3 SWR50 from Sony?

http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/products/smartwear/smartwatch-3-swr50/

Not seen anything myself, wondering if it's worth getting along with my Z3 I'm pre-ordering.

Most of the hands on for it that I've seen say it's ok, but the strap makes it feel really cheap. The cool thing though is that the face completely pops out and you'll be able to replace it with different straps once Sony releases them, though I think even the ones announced for the future are all rubber as well. Along with that and the feature set (accelerometer, compass, gyro, GPS, & IP68 dust and waterproofing), it seems to be aimed more towards fitness rather than fashion.

Thanks. There will be no denying I will be doing some fitness, and if I get a smart watch at all it must be a good one, but it must also look and feel professional as well for days at work. If they release a non-rubber strap, I may treat myself.

Do you have any links to impressions?

No prob. I just googled the impressions, but I think it was this, this, and this one that had a decent amount of info. I should also correct myself in that it's a silicone strap instead of rubber.

EDIT: Apparently it should have pretty good battery life too. Sony is claiming you can get 2-5 days out of it.

That's the closest thing to that concept, in my mind, but mainstream ideas about what a watch could and should be would have to change.

The problem with that concept in my mind is - what circumference do you make the watch "face" - ie. how narrow or wide is the "arc". Too narrow and wide wrist people can't fit it over their wrist, too wide and it overhangs a small wrist too much and looks ridiculous. It's like you'd have to get your write measured and get a custom face fabricate to match the curvature of your wrist based on its size.

supposedly they will partner with fashion designers for bands, but i sure wouldnt buy one without seeing a better band for it.

For me personally, ZenWatch overall looks the best (considering the battery), lets see if they will disappoint us in something else.
