Android Wear |OT| 2nd Gen is Here

Picked up a new G Watch for $130 shipped. I really want to mess around with it but after five minutes there was nothing to do. What apps make the platform fun/useful?

It's not meant to be an applewatch. It's passive, and to supplement your everyday notifications.

Its a smart watch it's not supposed to be fun. If you don't get many notifications then it will probably be useless to you.

Is a tech gadget, of course it's supposed to be fun! Stuff like the calculator is what I'm asking about, something I can use in a pinch.

So far, Wear has been buggy too, I hope we get an update soon. I'm liking the watch and I can see a lot of potential. I mean, I knew I was getting in early, that's why I didn't pay much.

The Goldeneye Watch face now lets you hear sounds (from your phone) when you look at the time. I'm going to set mine to the pause theme obviously.

Wear is not made to be active like that, the base software revolves around passive notifications and taking action on those notifications. If you want to really make it buzz a lot and you don't get a ton of texts and emails, set up notifications on any of your apps on the phone that go off when you're near something. Turn on every notification on Google Now. Then go take a walk. Other than that go for one of the fitness apps.

If you're not driven crazy by all the notifications, then more power to you.

Yes, but the included leather band works great.

My issue is the leather band isn't appropriate for wearing it at the gym for example where I sweat a fair amount. Are there any decent sports bands out there for the Moto360? Hearing mixed reports about 22mm bands, apparently the Pebble Steel metal band fits but that isn't a standard 22mm band...

Some impressions on the LG G Watch and Android Wear:

-Battery life is a non-issue as long as you place the watch on a cradle every night. I wake up early and go to sleep late and I haven't even come close to running out of juice and I check the watch constantly.

-The navigation needs work. There simply needs to be a way to keep cards that you want without it taking the lower 5th of the watch face. I'd like to be able to scroll past notifications without having to swipe them away, without them taking up all that space on my watch face at the bottom. Also, there needs to ALWAYS be an action when you swipe up. A carousel is more intuitive. So, if there are no cards, you swipe down for settings, apps, etc. Finally, the swipe down needs to be a quick settings card.

-Where are the damn apps? Is there simply not enough tools in the SDK for devs to play with? Or is there just no interest in the platform?

-Google should've had a big update ready for the Apple event or the day after. Everyone knew Apple was going to announce a smartwatch, why let them take up all the media for the next weeks regarding smartwatches? An update would've at least put Android Wear in the conversation. Right now, it's nonexistent. The Apple watch announcement definitely stirred up interest. I've had people ask me about my watch every day, I wish I had more stuff to demo, and that it was easier to demo stuff (goes back to the navigation point above)

Overall, I'm keeping the watch (I only paid $130, that's a bargain for the use I've gotten and will get out of this little gadget). I like it, I like the platform, and it has broken my compulsion to pick up my phone every 5 minutes. Also, since I can never get sound profiles right on Android,I used to miss a ton of calls/texts. But having the watch means I've missed no calls or texts, especially critical work-related ones.

LG G Watch last charged 3 days ago. I would say this is really good battery life all things considered.

Thanks for the writeup.

There are a couple apps linked in thread. Which ones have you tried?

Talon just got updated today with the ability to view your feed from any Android Wear watch, looking forward to trying that out whenever the Moto360 is available here in the UK. Currently no idea when this thing is arriving, misinformation everywhere...

I have the one that allows you to swipe from the home screen to access apps. It's essential, but clunky. I have a calculator app of course, and a swarm app. OneNote is another one. I think that's about the only good ones. I installed a few others that were janky or not polished that I deleted almost immediately.

Should be arriving soon, it just came out in France

Still trying to get my hands on one. Apparently some places already had stock but went OOS very quickly. I've been checking sites multiple times a day and still nothing. Even had a retailer say they're expecting stock on the 13th, but now that it's the 13th it's still showing as Out Of Stock. Motorola pls :(

Subscribing.

Got a 360 over the weekend, so far I really like it.

Not sure it's worth the $$$ yet, but I was looking for some new watch and really like the customization on the faces.

It's going to take me a while to get usedto using it for calling/texting/volume control, which is probably what I'll use it for the most.

I can't use my moto 360 any more. The new update for android wear keeps force closing on mt htc one m7. So I thought of reinstalling the app and factory reseting the watch. Now It's not syncing. I also can't find the previous version of the app to install for the time being. :/

So I just realized that if you change phones, the only way to re-pair your watch is to factory reset it. The fuck? This is either a huge oversight or Google just doesn't care. Pebble does this so much better.

Anyone got any inside on when the LG G watch R is going to drop for real?
Last I heard, it should have started today in Korea.

So the Android Lollipop, Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 announcement has arrived with...no mention of Android Wear 2.0 :(

So now what happens with the LG G Watch R hitting South Korea today with a barometer inside it that I don't believe is supported by Wear currently?

And the Sony watch launching at the end of month with NFC/native GPS support, also not supported in the current version of Wear.

So sometime between now and then I'm guessing.

Looks like Sony Smartwatch 3 is listed on Play store as coming soon for $250. Probably will release the same time as Wear 2.0 I guess since it mentions offline functionality.

My 360 with Pebble Steel's black leather band, looks freakin' awesome.

I've had the watch for about 2 weeks now and pretty happy with the watch so far. Battery life has been better than expected - yeah you gotta charge it daily but I never really worry about the battery life as long as you don't fiddle with it all the time.

How did you get the bands out?

How did you get the bands out?

The stock band uses the same spring style screw as every other watch, so just need a tool to reach the spring and take band out. Pretty easy, but still need to be careful not to damage/crack the back of the Moto. There are picture guides as well as videos on the web on how to do this.

I got a 360 a week ago. Impressions:

- Battery life is fine once I stopped goofing off with it. Using it just as a watch/Google Now/Notifications device, it had 25% after a full day (6:30 - Midnight)

- Voice recognition isn't as good as on my phone.

- Some things are not very well tuned, UI wise.
- Once you activate voice search, there's no simple way to dismiss (like with a swipe). Given that touching the watch face brings it up, this happens a lot. I have to turn off the display and on again to get back to the watch face.
- No phone controls once a call is in progress. Volume control, mute, hangup would be welcome. My earbuds don't have full functionality and I prefer not to fish my phone out of my pocket for everything.

- There isn't as much general functionality as I would have hoped.

- Choosing watch faces is awesome. It's a pretty big reason I wanted the thing, being able to customize. The software to make faces, however, is almost all pretty buggy. Still, I made an Ignatz Mouse watch ala a Mickey watch, and that makes me very happy.

Lest this sounds overly negative, I am loving the watch. I think the above things are likely to improve with updates.

The part where it starts to listen? You can dismiss it like other stuff by swiping it to the right.

Just got the update this morning, cool little additions but not the "big" update I guess everyone was waiting for, hopefully that's still coming with the release of L in early Nov. Pretty awesome being able to swipe cards down now to save them for later, now I can finally leave Google Now's weather and stock cards and look at them whenever I want. The Play Music integration is quite nice as well, but not liking how music is being transferred to the watch right now. It essentially transfers all pinned music on your phone to the watch. But pretty damn cool being able to use your watch as a music player by itself, perfect for workouts with a pair of wireless earbuds.

By the way, the developer of Wear Mini Launcher released a new app today call Wear Battery Stats. I think the name is self-explanatory, finally something to keep track of our power...

I actually think the latest update has a bug where the Moto 360 screen doesn't wake up during alarms.

The latest update to wear and fit messed up the step counting and now the watch is useless for keeping track of my activity. What can I do?

Walk more to catch back up? Snark aside, as i'm looking at getting the LG G R watch when it comes here to the states, how does Wear back up data?

If you have a 360, I recommend Pujie Black - Wear Watch Face. Probably the slickest watchface out there, imo.

Just bought it earlier today. Thanks for sharing that.

This is the only 3rd party face I've ever used for more than 2 minutes before switching back to one of Motos. It is awesome.

New stuff coming for Moto 360 and AMA on Reddit tomorrow at 12:30pm CT.
