Angry Joe: Major Nelson Interview (Xbox One) E3 2013

Larry doesn't appear to be a very genuine human. He pretends to be a fun loving, scarf wearing, hip to new trends fifty year old man but in reality he's just a crabby old goat waving teenagers off his lawn and scouring for the best early bird brunch specials.

You don't know that. He could be a really nice guy.

FWIW Joe, I thought you did a great job. You should be proud that you had him face to face and didn't throw softballs.

Balls. You got 'em.

Fantastic work.

Thanks man.

But as you can see, I knew that shit would happen regardless from my haters/detractors, so I was prepping myself for it, but I swear to god its just impossible when you see how twisted some people think and their perceptions of who you are and why you are doing this or that. Its just crazy. Regardless I still read everyone's comments in order to continue to improve.

I appreciate the work you put into your videos--it greatly shows!

Just a quick question, did you not find it questionable how Larry essentially discarded your question concerning the potential shutdown of Xbox one's servers? He basically criticises the question for looking too-far-forward into the future. Yet when you asked about DRM policy/internet requirements, he immediately justifies the Xbox's position by being "designed for the future".

Wait, so Larry wants us to look upon the console with future lenses, but discards a question which is established on forward thinking?

So what are we meant to do, Larry? Think about the potential future of the console or not?
And if you want us to render it as a future console--then provide a clear, concise answer about the security of our potential investments.

They are so fixated on the future that they seem to have forgotten about the 'now'.

I just think it demonstrates the inconsistency of MS.

Some of the comments in this thread....smh. Angry Joe is not part of the 'official' games media, he's a YT personality. That he was able to get an interview with MN like this is pretty amazing. If this isn't a testament to the fact that a lot of the games media is too cozy with publishers, I don't know what is. Pubs are constantly trying to seduce 'journalists' in the games media with free review copies, paid trips and other BS that many are happy to lap up in exchange for nice and tidy high review scores and praise for whatever game is being pushed. Joe had to fight for his interview and it shows.

Thanks for the efforts man, and thanks for your support with the #NoDRM movement as well.

You tell 'em Joe!

Joe took his lumps for the trainwreck of an interview he did with Geoff,so I'm glad to see he's learned from it and got a scoop in the process.

Just wanted to pop in and echo everyone else and say that it was an awesome and interview and thank you for asking the questions most interviews wouldn't.

Angry Joe was funny for a while, but his rants really got tiresome quickly

About the interview, well, he was decent actually

You're way too hard on yourself Joe. You have more brass and balls than most journo's, and asked tough pro consumer questions. Great job. Major Nelson seemed quite flustered lol.

Keep it up Joe, you do great work.

If I had to critique one thing, honestly, your friend Joe (the other Joe) isn't an ideal on-screen companion. His enthusiasm is great but he's just not entertaining in the least.

Hey, whoever criticize Angry Joe, listen!!

His interview was great. He had the guys to ask the question we are meaning to ask with risks that he'll be thrown out. No journalist had the balls to ask that.

You should be thanking him actually.

Dude. Wtf. God Damn. No understanding how some people perceive the world and seemingly CLEAR events.
What perks do I have? Everything I get I have to WORK LIKE HELL TO GET. I get dismissed CONSTANTLY. No matter how many subscribers I have, you say "youtube" and you see eyeballs glaze over. Yet the person behind you in line drops "IGN" and all of a sudden people jump out of the seats and magically space clears up and they get a sit down interview. I want you to watch my upcoming interviews and see where they are conducted, they off in small corners, I literally muscle/slip my way into areas in order to make room, in order to make things happen. No one is wiping my ass with golden TP. I went back to Ubisoft and EA EVERYDAY of the event, every OTHER hour to land what I did.

I went back to MS no less than 4 TIMES. Running back and forth from the South Hall (where most of the games were) to the West Hall (where MS was) to try to land this.

Perks my ass. From time to time I will get a review copy, rarely, but they often stop coming in after I do a negative review. I've come to not rely on them anymore. There are only a very select few companies who really understand youtube and treat you well, trying to get you interviews and previews of games so you can share them with your audience.

I didnt bend down for no one. But im a freaking human being, and when someone tells me they could lose their job or something, or looks seriously concerned from what I just did, I FEEL BAD as any human should. Did it stop me from doing the interview? Did I stop me from asking the questions I was going to ask? Did it stop me from putting up the damn video? WTF man. Seriously.

If you wanted me to scream and spit at Major Nelson, you are just plain ignorant.
Welcome.

Thanks man.

Never stop to focus on your support as well. Constructive critisism is useful for improvement. Plain whining and complaining without explaining is useless info. Simply move on from them. You should feel a little better knowing that both you and Kaz are the inspiration for my avatar. I don't have Photoshop because I want legal software as much as possible and so love open source. So I used Paint.NET (so many layers...), it turned out decent I think.
Also your in my head now. Sure hope Kinect doesn't see it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v776jlfm7vE

The best thing to come out of MS's Xbone debacle is me learning who Angry Joe is. Those Xbone rants were just awesomely entertaining, and if I ever have a bad day I'm sure I can watch the first five or so minutes of his Bioshock Infinite review and that will make me smile.

I do think he's best off-the-cuff though, just yappin' into his webcam. Wish there had been some press conference reaction vids, but whatevs. Welcome, SmilingFunJoe.

Angry Joe on GAF? Awesome. I enjoyed the interview. Man, things got awkward fast (for Major Nelson) but it was great that you were able to deliver on some hard hitting questions for the fans.

I did the best I could with my level of experience, knowledge, and preparation under unfriendly, rushed conditions. Trying to balance PR deflects and strategic long answers in order to stay on topic.

Hey dude, how about you zip it every now and then and let the dude you're interviewing actually answer the questions given? You've been doing this long enough that you should know THAT key bit about interviews.

I mean, it makes Larry, who seems like a genuinely smarmy prat, appear reasonable by power of contrast. And that just ain't right, man.

Some of the comments in this thread....smh. Angry Joe is not part of the 'official' games media, he's a YT personality.

He conducts interviews with PR dudes, publishes those interviews and rakes in advertising revenue doing so. Much like "official games media," whatever the hell that is.

What part of "rushed conditions" Do you not understand? He only had a very short time to talk to Larry and had to fire off as many questions as he could in a very short time.

I thought he acted as politely as possible while not giving softball questions while Larry was acting fairly rude to him IMO.

It hardly fucking matters how many questions you can fire off if you don't leave space for the god damned answers, now does it?

Geoff has been doing this shit for awhile. Of course he knows how to be aggressive while being professional. I'm sure as time goes on Joe will learn how to do that as well.

I don't understand why people expect him to be Super Journalist. Dude isn't even a journalist and it's evident by how much he hijacked the mic during the interview.

This is off-topic maybe, but I wanted to chime in on this.
I didn't watch every single interview Geoff Keighley made over the years, but I've watched a few. Geoff doesn't sound professional at all to be, and not worthy of the "Journalist" title more than Angry Joe. His E3 13 interviews weren't particularly interesting, in the Don Mattrick interview he sounds at least as "passive-aggressive" as Joe, and his Reggie interview is just throwing up "Nintendo no sales!" over and over again, and little less.
Geoff interviews feel like marketing ads, he just lets the developers do their speech, and that's all.

Never watched Angry Joe but that was a fantastic interview.

I wouldn't say you're angry though, Just VERY direct. I loved every second.

It's just a name, and it doesn't apply 100% of the time. Of course, one can't be angry in the context of a professional interview, that wouldn't be cool. There's a time and place for everything.

Yeah, but have you seen Titanfall?

p.s: good to have you here

I don't know why people are still trying to figure this out. Ms wants to go digital. It's not that hard to understand. They thought that it was a good idea to slowly introduce an all digital Xbox by still having disks available at retailers. Just decide if your ready for a digital console or not.

There's nothing slow about mandating an Internet connection.

I cannot believe that some people honestly expected Joe to what? Grab Major Nelson by the throat and scream in his face until he admitted their policies suck?

Joe was trying his hardest to cover what his fans on his channel wanted to see. The fact that Joe was even able to get that interview was impressive. He asked hard questions in a professional manner. He did a hell of a lot better than some journalists who make good money to cover these events.

Keep up the good work Joe!

This.

Much like Francis, Angry Joe is an Internet personality. When the camera is off, they act like normal rational human beings. I am surprised people can't seem to understate this and seperate the fictional personality from the actual person.

Can't make a thread so.....

A Reddit user recently got in touch with Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb, the community manager for Xbox, and obtained a wealth of information regarding the Xbox One. Despite the official Redditor’s E3 interview, which confirms a few of the details, there’s a ton of other stuff here to take into account. Take it all with a grain of salt as usual, but considering the user’s credibility (most likely a journalist, since he went to E3 and by judging by his profile here), it’s hard to discredit.

Regarding the current opinion of the Xbox One, don’t count on Microsoft changing their DRM strategy any time soon. In fact, they’ll be working to “educate” gamers about the benefits of their policies

It’s also revealed that the 24 hour check-in is a means to update your library, for when you lend games to friends. Which is funny because the with game trades limited, why would it need updating every 24 hours? No good answers there and no clear understanding as to why it inconveniences consumers.
And say goodbye to leaks, since Microsoft is also working on a system where games can only be activated on release, no matter when you buy them.

It also looks at the PS4 as “Xbox 360 version 2″ due to the lack of social and multi-tasking features. The company doesn’t even see Sony as a threat. Even better, it believes that the PS4′s graphics RAM will run hotter, besides not being as optimized as the Xbox One. Thus leading to both being evenly matched or, believe it or not, the Xbox One performing ahead.

The good news is that the company sees Don Mattrick as some one who is making them look worse, and is working to muffle him.

As for military personnel playing consoles: the defense given is that PS3/PS4 won’t be allowed on DoD networks. So the whole issue of military members switching to the PlayStation while on deployment is a non-issue. Scroll down in the comments on that thread, and you’ll find military personnel who agree – but state that they can still play offline. Also, how would that inspired a switch to the Xbox One, since it needs to be online?

Nelson also talked about changing the messaging and marketing campaigns to support those whose friends would be jumping to PSN. He said they understood that and were going to be working to actively change the messaging and marketing campaigns. Hilariously, they don’t feel that pre-orders will determine the console war until both consoles are released.

He also pointed out that unlike the free games you get on PSN, the two free games per month on XBL are yours forever. Whereas if you cancel your PS Plus subscription, you would lose those games.

As for whether the check-in period would be removed if the user had the physical disc, Nelson stated he’d get back to us on that. Thoughts?

That's not the point. Microsoft is FORCING his customers to go into a all digital scenario, while keeping the same business model for the "physical" one.
The result is a poor mix of the two worlds, which embraces all the downsides of the digital distribution, and negates the benefits of the more traditional one (sharing, used sales, renting). The icing of this faeces cake is the imposed DRM.

In my opinion, that's not the way one slowly introduces an all digital console, but a over-complicated way to try to simply fuck your customers, just because someone thought it would be profitable to do so.

Major Nelson Addresses DRM Concerns, Silencing Don Mattrick and How PS4 Isn’t a Threat

MS is going to go crazy on damage control since they now admit they are going to be losing money if they do not educate consumers. Wow.

great job angry joe!

always cracks me up when people bitch about people who make free shows on youtube, like they wasted their hard earned money or something.

He conducts interviews with PR dudes, publishes those interviews and rakes in advertising revenue doing so. Much like "official games media," whatever the hell that is.

Have you thought that he isn't trained like 'professional' games journalists and he was fighting his nerves here? Or are you saying it's easy to remain calm and composed with PR hawks circling you? Official games media are the giant sites like IGN, Giant Bomb, Kotaku, etc. Come on dude that's really effing common knowledge there.

It hardly fucking matters how many questions you can fire off if you don't leave space for the god damned answers, now does it?

Time constraints probably factor in. It's not a perfect interview, but shit man, were you expecting a nice and calm liesurely back-and-forth? That clearly wasn't the case, it seemed like the MS people were about to shut off the interview partway through. Seems like you're shitting on him just to shit. You seem to know a lot about how to conduct a 'proper' interview, how about you try it with Major Nelson?

Haha, you got moxy Joe. Keep up the good work, but you must allow people to finish their sentences before you take away the m

fuck he did it to me too

I can't say the interview was perfect, but Joe did do a good job. It was obvious that Nelson didn't really have intent to cooperate.

I don't like the Angry Joe gimmick, but I think for not being a professional journalist he did a really decent interview.

I just wish instead of asking questions we already know the answers to like the drm issues and internet connection, someone would ask more about how the shared games library works.

For example, we know we can add up to 10 people, but what happens if we add someone and they get a new gamertag or stop playing Xbox One? Are they stuck on our list forever, or can we remove them and add someone else?

If you share your games library with someone, do you have to belong to the same family group, or can each person have 10 different family members?

Seems like you're shitting on him just to shit. You seem to know a lot about how to conduct a 'proper' interview, how about you try it with Major Nelson?

I really don't think it's unreasonable to expect him to give the guy a chance to answer the questions. That's the whole point of an interview, isn't it? He also published it (and enabled ads to get paid for his work), so it's not like he's been forced into this position.

"Official games media" or not, this is also not the first outing for a virgin hobbyist angel, and it feels to me like he's not improving like one would expect. Maybe that is because ALL criticism is treated as "shitting on him just to shit."

This is not shitting on for the sake of shitting on, but thanks for that argument. This is critique.

Not defending him from criticism, I'm defending him from the dudes who sneer at the guy for not blowing up in MN's face. Your comment doesn't do that, but I'm curious why you decided to challenge me on the media bit. I made the distinction that AJ isn't part of the official games media because they get perks and other such niceties while AJ has to really work to get his interviews. That makes a difference in the tone of the interviews as well, and the setting. I'd imagine the PR hawks don't like giving interviews to an unknown.

I may have misunderstood your reply, but you're not going to get a decent discussion out of anyone by being a jackass.

I wasn't aiming for a discussion. I leveled my criticism against how the interview was handled by Angry Joe, and was met with your typical defense league bullshit, culminating in your claim that I was shitting on the guy for the sake of shitting on him.

Top Bottom
