Angry Joe: Major Nelson Interview (Xbox One) E3 2013

MS better acquire / build the best in class IT operations team for X1 auth model. One widespread issue resulting in single player disruption will be a PR disaster.

That's the risk.

Yeah, pretty much. People keep harping on submarines and internet outages, but the real trouble is going to arise when MS has a service blip and/or they don't anticipate a big release and the entire service crashes. That's what really turns me off about Xbone.

I can't stop loling the irony of someone callled "Major" Nelson defending a f*** y*** to the military debloyed somewhere because of the crap DRM they implemented.

Its ironic the best games journalist I've seen so far doesn't even recognize himself as one. Though I wish Joe would've left the DRM issue alone, it was clear from the beginning Major Nelson was only going to spin it into cloud tech PR everytime but Joe was too straight thinking to take the hint.

Funny in the angry joe thread the other day people were talking about how joe don't take no shit from no suit, yet here we are going from spitting on camera ANGRY to whipped little man, because he fights the power unlike those damn journalist.

Unwatchable. And why is every dude with a mic now Angry Mike, Pissed Off Pete, Loud Larry or Entitled Evan.

And whats on homeboys cheek?

Nice ad hominem since you have nothing to contribute to this thread...

Also he's been doing the angry joe shtick for a long long times.

Keep it up Joe, and don't feel intimidated by PR people, they have one job and that's keeping you from doing yours, so don't feel sorry for them either.

I'm actually a tad disappointed in Joe. He wasn't nearly as aggressive as he should have been , especially when the interviewee is as greasy and evasive as this one is.

For one thing, showering him with all this praise just for conducting the interview, and being able to "share your games" unlike that Nazi offering we call Steam was distressing to watch.

Why the notes? Joe has articulated his thoughts on this very subject better than most on his very own Youtube channel. He's well aware of the most salient points and the background from which they stem. Just seemed like it was an ill prepared interview.

Needs more focused anger...

in the other video he explain why, PR lady scared the shit out of him and he didn't wanted to get black listed (iirc he got blacklisted when he was with blistered thumbs)

His explanation why the interview went the way it did, gives him for me, a lot of lee way. He is more open about the situation, then just about any games media "journalist". His not relying on PR to make a living is a huge boon to his honest dealings with the industry. While it isnt as "business" like or professional like some would like, I think it is a breath of fresh air.

I think by end of that video, specifically the car audio part, I wanted to give Joe a hug. He felt small and intimidated by the bigger production shows and journalists hanging around.

More importantly, he was overly concerned about the PR lady, which is touching....since suits & PR wouldn't think two seconds about blacklisting someone, or treating them like garbage.

I wanted to comment on the youtube page, telling Joe to flex his muscle, considering he has 791,000 subscribers (He actually went from 788,000 to 791,000 in the same day), but I realised that'd be completely against Joe's nature, trying to strongarm people with his subscriber numbers to get interviews. The fact that he isn't like that is why I subscribed in the first place, so kudos to him.

So what you're saying is, Angry Joe will bend down to THE MAN in order to retain his potential perks, as opposed to being a voice for the people? I am shocked, and so should be all involved.

(note, this is referencing other threads where people champion him against game journos because he will say it how it is)

I think you're mischaracterizing what Joe said in the other video. He mostly felt bad because he thought he "broke her trust.". He showed her the questions but only highlighted the friends list one, so it's a completely understandable reaction for him to have. You know, empathy towards another human.

You could say the same about Sony too. PSN was hacked and down for weeks, and now they're charging for it on the ps4. They even had the ps3 leap year glitch that knocked consoles offline.

Live has been stable for years and MS also has cloud experience with their Azure platform. Shit happens though, as even Amazon had that huge cloud hosting issue a while back that affected a number of popular websites.

Exactly.

In addition, when the interviewee freely insults the interviewer with cheap remarks like, "Are you a developer, did you actually code the game?", or,"Are you a lawyer?", when he clearly knows he's neither of these things, all bets are off as far as I'm concerned. He actually stole the guys mic at one point!

That's not to say Joe needs to be foul mouthed, dropping expletives left and right as he regularly does on his youtube channel (which I enjoy). Of course there's a standard of professional conduct that Joe should adhere to, but that's contingent on Major Nelson adhering to those same standards.

For instance, GAF loves to shit on Geoff Keighley branding him the Doritos pope and whatnot. But when Don Matrick says something as repulsive as, "We have a product for people that lack an internet connection, it's called the Xbox 360" and Keighley replies with "So that's your message then? Go buy a 360 if I lack internet access, is that really your message?" That's being aggressive without being unprofessional, which is the interview style Joe should have attempted to emulate IMHO.

He's not a journalist. He's just a random guy on the internet that plays and talks about games.

No kidding? I was mocking the people who carry him out on their shoulders declaring him better than every professional writer.

a) Essentially unlimited friends list

b) Family plan is like a library, can only be checked out one at a time? Still some confusion here as Phil Spencer has said he believes it's up to 2 people at the same time.

c) Doesn't promise anything about the future and access (shutting down service)

d) You can give the game once but then it becomes of no real value (can't be sold). That means the giver doesn't get anything in return. Lame.

e) Region locking is back but I do believe that it's policy is up to the publisher much like how it works on the 360.

f) No internet access means no gaming. Nelson then goes off on a tangent about the benefits of game sharing and easy access. He's now on the defensive.

g) Cloud promises

h) Steam is brought up and he instantly goes into attack mode about the family plan and giving games away.

i) 11:30 Nelson has enough and grabs the microphone when Joe mentions about doing away with the online requirements. Makes fake promises about allowing total freedom if that is what the publishers wants.

I really don't like these type of vague answers and it's almost like nailing down a politician to answer hard questions.

Exactly.

That comes with experience and you can tell Angry Joe doesn't want to ruffle too many feathers. Keighley can probably get away with it more as he's gained more of a following and has a longer history.

Alright. Haha. So we are at 2 people can play Game A at the same time, as long as it's the single player portion.

Meanwhile, family planners 3-10 can still check out Game B,C,D,E,F,G,etc.

Still pretty awesome.

That's not much different than loaning a disc out, just with more restrictions btu iwth the advantage of not requiring physical items. It's not that great.

Not even that, he said "As long as it's splitscreen", so 2 people can play the same game at the same time, but only on the same console.

This entire forum is essentially the opposite of this. There's a PS4 satisfaction thread (that people are posting in to keep bumped and visible, full of messages that read very similar to this youtube comment) for fuck's sake. There's no high horse for Gaf to look down on anyone from right now, if you ask me. Not even youtube.

As has been mentioned, there's also an XBone satisfaction thread. More crucially, the XBone thread was started much earlier and has 25 (!) pages, while the PS4 one was started as a response to the XBone one, and has only 7 pages. I think you're simply seeing what you want to see, as the XBone has been in the top page almost constantly.

I'm not sure what your point is, either. GAF has always been very neutral concerning Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony, with defenders (and fanboys) and detractors (and trolls) of each almost in the same proportion. If you think the sudden surge of negativity of Microsoft is related to anything else but their recent actions, well, you may be deluding yourself.

These types of comments really do piss me off. The guy's doing what journalists won't do, asking hard questions. Did you really expect him to SCREAM there? How would he be able to get any interview EVER from now on if he did that? And why in the world would he act like in the videos? And how he ISN''T "fighting the power"?

Seriously.

Some of you really don't get it lol.

- Joe is not a journalist
- lack of experience and not trained. He doesn't have the skills like Doritos pope
- PR is watching like a hawk, and wrong moves will get him kick out of the interview
- He goes there as a gamer just like us that got a chance to ask questions

And what he really is good at is reviewing games
He is also a Bro

Phone tethering seriously?

Only $29.99/mo to add that to my plan, lol. And Jelly Bean made the workaround apps stop working. Thanks, Google.

Wrong. A single player PS4 game will function regardless of the status of PSN. X1 games could potentially not function or be installed. That's a big difference. A Grand Canyon.

Best of luck to them.

Well it's a lot more convenient for me. If I had to borrow a game from one of my friends I'd have to wait until he was done and then arrange to go pick it up.

Let's give Angry Joe some times.
Like anybody else in the world he need more experience but it's hard for him if the industry is avoiding him.

Joe, you did what you can.
You will be able to do better i futur.
I can imagine that it can be hard to hard difficult question without being immediatly shove off.

Joe seems like a swell guy, I appreciate his effort.

The real thing to take away from this whole thing is that Joe is a self-proclaimed Xbox-only fanboy of a decade, and even he can't deal with what MS has put on the table.

And the other thing to take away is that the MS reps are all as completely unlikeable as the Sony reps are loveable (and I think even without having this anchor tied to their neck it would be the same). Don't they have an Adam Boyes-type that can be the face of this thing?

No offense but your prognosticating track record recently isnt so great recently since you thought it was "obvious" that Sony was also going to have an online requirement, "pretty sure" they would have used game restrictions after Xbox's polioces were announced....

I did since Giant Bomb stated that many major third party publishers were making a push for it at the time.

thought the Xbox One was going to be $400 and the PS4 $450,

Yes, because the Xbox One doesn't have better specs -- so, again, how is that a bad thing? I made that assumption based on specs but somehow that connects to me being an Xbox fanboy? Haha, okay.

and stated that a price point above $400 would hurt them significantly

I still think that a price point above $400 will hurt the Xbox One after the first year or so when the early console buyers are done purchasing it if there isn't any other features on the system that will let users save money in comparison to the PS4 -- that as well as just a possible price drop (obviously).

Funny how the things you previously stated in various threads were weaknesses of PS4 (theoretical higher price point, lack of backwards compatibility) and things would be alienating features of any system (restricting used games) are now moot points when it turns out that the Xbox One has all those problems because it has this arcane "family" sharing thing that apparently negates all of those weaknesses...

I never said they were moot points. All I said is that for some, the family plan will make some not mind the restrictions.

I've stated what 4,5,6 times in this thread that the PS4 will obviously be the better system for anyone who wants to stick with physical game media? So how am I making the family plan a moot point for that?

All I've said was that different people will like & be interested in different things if they are appealing to them and based on early reactions, that case is pretty fitting for the family share plan.

Why is that so hard for you guys to understand?

Glad to see someone call him out, dude is a spinning machine who doesn't realize how contradictory he has been.

Haha, yeah -- he sure showed me!!!

Video games -- serious business.

Good on him. He freely admits that he isn't a journalist yet he probably made Nelson and the PR team sweat more than anyone else has done. He kept saying things that journalists are probably forbidden to say such as gamers being disappointed, countries getting screwed, EU laws, previous pr disasters and the big 3 letter swear word DRM (Nelson's face every time he used that word was hilarious). Joe looked like he was prepared to push for more satisfactory answers a couple of times until the off screen official stepped in.

Agreed.

He's the worst interviewer, always has a shit ton of excuses about being pressured and time....

...better than his pope interview though. At least he's not saying FF14 vanilla should be nominated for GOTY.

Seriously, he shows a major flaw in this generation of social blogger/youtube reviewers/personalities....he has no media training. He's already nervous and mumbling a bit..Larry spews some PR bullshit at him and then just loses his shit in confusion.
Awful.

I love Angry Joe and appreciate what he tries to do. His interviews are rough and it makes sense because he is just some guy.

keep it up man. yeah its not always super professional but that's how it goes.

Put a person of authority in front of these so called "voice of the angry people" and they shrivel up like a scared turtle.

You are an idiot. Straight and Simple.
Its people like you that I freaking hate. People who get butthurt when someone calls someone else the "voice of the people" (even if they are asking questions DIRECTLY from "people" or "Gamers". I've never ONCE called myself that for your information.

And I had done what you are expecting, ranting raving and using profanity in front of a "person of authority" as you claim, the interview would be effing over in the blink of an eye, you'd not only be blacklisted, but you'd possibly be banned from future events by the ESA. (As I explained in the video)

Its clear you haven't even freaking watched the damn thing before your ignorant ass comment. Fuggin Internet I swear. Someone convinces themselves they dont like you, it becomes a past time for them to revel in hating your ass and building you up as a villain in their own reality (regardless of your character or integrity).

Don't mind the trolls.

You did well :)

Geoff has been doing this shit for awhile. Of course he knows how to be aggressive while being professional. I'm sure as time goes on Joe will learn how to do that as well.

I don't understand why people expect him to be Super Journalist. Dude isn't even a journalist and it's evident by how much he hijacked the mic during the interview.

Top Bottom
