If it's right for you, it can last a looooong time. However, since all releases since the original have been pretty incremental upgrades, once you've played the heck out of one the others will seem stale much more quickly. I'm sure I put more time into the GameCube version than the DS and Wii ones combined.

I don't know about that. I played the gamecube version a LOT but Animal Crossing really shines when it's portable. I have played the DS version even a lot more then the gamecube version (and I didn't even played online multiplayer aside from a handfull of times!!). I don't own the Wii version though, but I would instantly buy a second handheld AC if it would expand enough on the current versions.
