I like anime because it gives me an incentive to contribute to the many anime topics in the Off-Topic Discussion section of the Gaming-Age Forums and it allows me to participate in the oh so intelligent anime discussions in #ga irc chat.

Can I get a DVD anyway?

Are you giving all the anime to one person?

Oh, and I like anime cause it makes me feel like a big man. I big nerdy girly man, but still, a man. A MAN! :(

AFAIK there is no rape in any of these DVDs. Saikano may have some awkward boob touching, can't remember if it was on in the 1st vol.

I like it because of the humor, and they explore a wider variety of themes than typical american animation does. But yeah, I want some Inuyasha. Pleaaaaaaaaaaaase

I like anime because it potentially gets me free anime if I say I like it? :D

Truthfully, I probably like it for many of the same reasons that I liked cartoons when I was younger. It's just fun to watch, especially since the freedom from the restrictions of live-action performances allow much more fantastical stories. In my experience, most animes tend to have more continuous stories than most of the cartoons from my youth as well. Continuity is a feature that managed to rank Babylon 5 above ST:TNG, in my opinion. That's not to say that I don't enjoy serials; I just prefer continuous storylines. I also enjoyed it because it was something interesting to attempt to emulate in my drawings. I failed miserably, so I no longer really try to do that. Bishoujo doesn't hurt that much either.

On an amusing side note, I managed to get my best friend horribly addicted to anime. I bought her Inuyasha volume 1 a couple Christmases ago, and since then, she's purchased over 130 various discs (some being parts of boxsets) on her own. I'm not sure if I should feel good or bad about this, but she has a steady job, so it's not as though she can't afford it. I bought her some issues of the Fruits Basket manga last year (I was cheap, and two issues was cheaper than just one DVD), and so she went out and bought all the Fruits Basket DVDs; apparently it is among her favorite series. And yes, she's gone to at least one convention now, and participated in cosplay. I would like to have gone, but I had some bar exam review sessions that weekend, among other things. She's offered to take me along to the next one and create a costume for me, but I'm somewhat reluctant. Moreso because she's threatening to make a costume of a little girl character for me.

I like anime because it changed the face of animation for me. I think I first got into it when DBZ and Sailor Moon were still in syndication. I think that was around middle school for me. It was also around the time where the good Saturday morning stuff was starting to be weened off. Granted, though it was DBZ and the like at the time, it still offered me a completely new look at anime. I quickly realized, though, that "anime" was something that required a bit more knowledge to digest. I didn't get Dragon Ball/Z right away. The focus on continuity made it hard to swallow when you didn't begin right from the beginning. Once DVDs started to get popular, I moved into the heavier stuff like Ghost in the Shell. Before that, I'd seen *some* anime on the Sci-Fi channel, but once again, I had a hard time understanding it. Nonetheless, the aesthetics were appealing and it featured enough unique elements to keep my attention until I began to "get it." Of course, nowadays, its everywhere. I am much more discerning and I know which anime to stay away from. However, it expanded my horizons as to what could be accomplished with animation and a different kind of narrative flow. Sadly, while a lot of Western shows are trying to mimic the visual style, few of them have the story to support it. Its the same, old, episodic, slapstick tripe that has plagued the airwaves for years now.

Hey, anime may not always be good, and some of it is downright horrible, but I love anime for its potential and that can be seen in the minds of great creators like Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, and Eiichiro Oda (ok, manga, but the two are intrinsically linked). I think they just *try* harder and want to evoke emotion through animation in ways that it can't be done via live action. Western animation has little of that ambition beyond some of the feature films these days.

ah, all in one package? bleh

i've still not picked up the US release of saikano, even though i really want to see all the interviews/extra's in english. i bought the whole series when it was coming out in japan, which cost me probably a little over $300. but hey, i got a sweet box and a poster!

i'd also be curious to do a side by side look at the subs on the japanese and american dvd's.

but alas, i've been too cheap to double dip on the series :lol

Have to be honest though: If I get them, I'll almost certainly be giving the Saikano to the friend I mentioned, for her birthday is coming up in two months. She's mentioned that she wants to see it, but I don't think she bought any yet (I've seen the whole series though). I sort of implied that I'll also be getting her KareKano (since Rightstuf seems to have it cheap all the time now). It did sort of seem to fall apart toward the end, but she enjoyed the few episodes she saw when I came over with my discs.

Okay I’ll bite

I like anime because it is constantly (for the most part) growing as an art form, it allows for subplot and nuance that is not possible with live action and not done in US animation.
I have been a fan since 93, getting fansubs of Ranma and the like.

God bless DVD for making it a cheaper hobby.

MY LORD! Ignore those filthy peons who cannot appreciate the greatness of receiving free cartoons! I must assure you that they do not speak on behalf of our proud community. Please continue to bless up with such gifts, as we, commonners, cannot even considering buying those high quality asian products.

I like anime because...uh...well I don't really. I own no anime, but if you want to send me one you can, and perhaps it would convert me?

Why do I like anime? Anime is a personal thing, if you ran into me in real life, you'd probably never guess I spend a great deal on the stuff. It reminds me of my childhood when my cousins in Japan would send me stuff recorded off of TV. The only difference now is that it's subtitled, letting me actually understand what's going on.

I'm not going to participate because I just don't want any of those DVD's, but aren't you giving away over a hundred bucks worth of merchandise here?

Even if you don't like him, or what he's offering, it's still a dickish thing to do to just try and accuse him of trying to do it for popularity.

'Sides, if he wanted popularity, he'd start with the bunny pictures again.

The only anime i've watched was Dragonball Z and I heard it's not the greatest.

I heard Inuyasha is pretty good and I would love to check it out.

I guess my first experiences with anime involved watching a few episodes of Doraemon and Dragonball Z. Although I must say I didn't delve into Doraemon as much, since it wasn't really available to me at that point, Dragonball Z wasn't so much a "Japanese cartoon" as much as the next show to come on after Ninja Turtles, for example.

Well, after experimenting with a few episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, that's when I realized how dynamic anime is. NGE, Studio Ghibli movies, Cowboy Bebop, or Karekano are at such extremes and really, I've realized how there really is a series or anime movie for pretty much any situation, whether you want action, comedy or some pseudo-deep series inundated with religious symbols... and yeah, even hentai for some of you.

So in reality, for any situation, if I'm bored, or frustrated, there's always something kicking around to watch.

So in that sense, why give it to me? Cause asides from Ghibli stuff, I just started my anime DVD collection (with the small amount of funds that I have) so it'd be nice to own some legit DVD's for a change.

Please.

:D

I initially got into anime because it was a much different look and feel from the zanier American stuff I grew up watching as a child. I kept becoming more and more fond of anime, because I was impressed by the art and the stories being told, more often than not.

If I got any of these DVDs, I'd use them as things that the club I run in my college can watch at meetings in between Halo LAN parties, SFAC/GGXX tourneys and ranting about the student government. :)

Wow, the Ai Yori Aoshi covers are a disturbing. Not just because they feature little girls in bikini, but because that brown girl really isn't brown... saying this probably lost my chance of getting the loot, but I'll still post why i like anime because of a cover that reminded me why I started to get into anime.

That Saikano cover reminds me of a Robot Carnival short. It was about a man who builds a female android, and as time goes by she reminds the same while he grows old and eventually dies. I watched this on the Sci Fi Channel, so i was still a kid, around the age that kids realize that everyone around them can die and it's permanent. That short made me incredibly sad, but it's what turned me onto anime.
I had watched other anime before, but it was either too silly and for kids or the Americanized Robotech and old school Nickelodean import cartoons. Robot Carnival showed me that there was more to animation than just lighthearted adventures or stylized action. Animation, not just anime, became something that I could watch not just for entertainment but something that I could relate to or make me think. So because of this it opened me to watch more anime.
It's not something that's exclusive to anime, so asking why i like anime is like asking me why i like movies. There's just too much to choose from and anyone can like anime, you just have to be open to it and usually there's a certain title that opens the door to it.

SO WHEN THE HELL IS ROBOT CARNIVAL EVER GOING TO COME OUT ON DVD?!!??!

I must say that I like anime because it gives me insight into a different culture; from watching anime all these years I have learned various things about the Japanese culture that I never would have learned from such a medium. Also, it is such a refreshing change from what normally airs on television here, and watching anime has also lead me to check out some other foreign art-forms. In the end though, the reason why I really love anime is that the genre in a whole is created in such a manner where you can go from enjoying a sci-fi anime to a drama anime. It's the way the animation is done and the way the art is stylized that really sets it apart from anything else. Also, you get such excellent fusions that you really never would get anywhere else like a Japanese samurai setting mixed with hip-hop in Samurai Champloo. It's really things like this that make anime one of my more favorable forms of media.

i don't even know what time it is EST there but ohhh, the eyebrows coming off their heads just like the samurai piza cats, just gotta get me some of that anime.. where else could someone wear a michael jackson surgical mask in grey no less while holding a giant bandaged chopstick? or a man lovingly and tenderly remove industrial shrapnel from the back of some random girl?

fuck, i don't live in the us or canada

if i win can i choose someone who DOES get the DVD's? i'll start my own competition

i don't like anime. if i do occasionally watch anime, it's because games like phantasy star 2 and samurai shodown subtly inspired a fondness for anime character designs when i was young and impressionable and nearly as stupid as the average gafer. but: i would like to trade your dvds in at a local secondhand shop and buy some music. subsidize truth and standards; send me your crap.

I like anime because my own life sucks and when I watch it I dream I'm like the characters on the screen with their powers and whatnot. It gives me a reason to keep from cutting my wrists in the mornings.

Since other people are describing how they first came into anime, I suppose I shall as well.

I have to say that I'm probably best-described as more of a late-adopter. I sort of knew it existed in middle and high school, but since I spent my money on other stuff, I never really bought any of it. Cartoon Network and other such channels were only just starting up at the time. One of my high school friends has a Sailor Moon fan club, but I thought she was ludicrous. She's expressed a recent distaste or disillusionment with anime. Perhaps she's had an overload.

Another friend, this time a guy, was very much into anime early on though. He didn't much care for Sailor Moon, but instead I believe his favorite at the time was NGE. He seemed to have quite a large collection of everything, and it didn't hurt that his parents had a kickass entertainment center in their basement. It was quite impressive: a whole room devoted to just the huge TV (don't think widescreen was available back then, but I can't imagine they haven't gotten one yet) and piles of other A/V equipment including surround. I think many of my preferences developed from what I saw at his house.

In addition to large mecha animes such as NGE, I also saw some of the fantasy themed shows at his house, and that led to my first anime purchase: Record of Lodoss War. I only started purchasing anime in any quantity after I left for college. Part of that had to do with my lack of a DVD player until I had my new college PC. Once I was at college though, there was also Cartoon Network. I admit that I do like shows like DBZ, although after viewing a few episodes of the original japanese version, I really hate some of the things that Funimation did to it. I guess they figured that the fundies would be offended by Mr. Satan and Hell (not that they had anything to do with each other in the show). I still continue to watch quite a bit of anime here in law school, perhaps even more than in college.

I guess the three biggest influences on my viewing habits, in chronological order, were my friends, Cartoon Network, and the Internet (yay Bit Torrent?). What immediately caught my eye as distinguishing anime from traditional western animation was obviously the art styles. I very much liked the crisp, streamlined character designs in shows such as NGE specifically, although later on I found that I could still enjoy the shows with slightly rougher designs like Lupin the Third. I'm not sure how much of an influence that is now, since I look at western shows like Home Movies, particularly every season until the last few, and I love it, while I then look at a show like Ed, Edd, & Eddy, and positively despise it.

As someone else mentioned, many (though not all) animes also frequently have themes that aren't touched on in western animation. Looking backward, I think this is why I especially loved an American cartoon (I think) by the name of Exosquad. It was dark and gritty at times, not at all the happy go lucky utopia of other cartoons. I guess a lot of other American stuff at the time seemed to have too much "fluff."

That's about all I have to say about that.

Dear .hacked,

I'd like to start off by stating that I'm special, not in the sense that I'm greater then anyone else here but that I'm and I quote am "F*cking Retarded"(<Look at the Tag) and to make it even worse a lot of people think Canadians are also retarded. That being said, I enjoy watching anime especially InuYasha, I've watched the all the episodes thus far released. And it's one of my favorite anime's to date, next to .HACK//Signs .HACK//Dusk, Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'd like to purchase all the volumes but unfortunatly excess income is something that's hard to come by these days.

I can give those DVD's a good home. As you can see my collection of Movies and Anime have grown over the years. It may not be as big as many of the members here collection's, but as of late there has not been enough money to increase my collect. If you can find it in your heart to give a "special" guy something it would mean the world!

You guys need to leave morphix alone, he is a cool guy in my book.

Anyways i got started in Anime with Akira i thought it was amazing that cartoons had blood and then when i saw SF:the ANimated movie i was in awe. After that i wasnt able to see any anime till bebop came out on dvd and i found a comic store that sold and rented ANime dvds litrally everthing that came out was there. I rented everythingi could get my hands on. Now i am addicted.

Crap, if you havent sent em off yet -- I'd love that Abenobashi one.. one of my favorite series from recent years but I just have disc 1 so far on the DVD front. I know the original post indicates you'd give them all away, but that's really the only one that interests me particularly. I think everyone knows I've been vocal of my anime love over the past few years at GAF. :D

Bah, I didn't say that I wasn't still going to get her H&HC. And the OP never said anything about not posting twice. :p

Edit: Although I HAVE been known to stuff the box in contests. Just this past weekend, I had to go and buy a new suit for interviews and stuff, and there was this contest for what the store claimed to be a necklace worth $5000, so I entered myself....and then my mother....and my father. My mother was there, so she knows about it, but it would be hilarious if my father wins, and when they call him he thinks it's a scam and hangs up. :D

I like anime, I always have. Not to be different, not to be cool, it was just something that clicked with me. It was always a really small priority in my life, and all my friends were more into it than me, but when I had the chances, I enjoyed watching it. I've been super busy ever since college started a couple years back and have fallen way behind. I'd like to see some new stuff. I'm not going to kiss ass, I just would like to see some new stuff, and hey, I can't afford to do it on my own.

HOOK IT UP DAWG.

Ok all done and before I announce the winner I just want to let you know how I picked them.

I did not think I would get some many good answers so what I did was put each of your names into a bowl, then let my pet bunny bunbun dig around in it until he grabbed a name.

An the name of the winner is DarthWoo, and before anyone asks his name was only put in once.

DarthWoo check your PMs.

I may do this again, who knows what I'll give away next time.
