Didn't want to give the impression the list I wrote was all that I watched. A short list of your favorites works great for me. I'm watching Monster currently -- excellent. Caught a few episodes of the Last Exile on tv, but never watched it from start to finish. I thought it was good. Have you watched Gankutusuou? It's a very creative retelling of the Count of Monte Cristo.

Can you tell me why these character seem to be fighting in a tournament? Aren't they supposed to be fighting alien creatures?

Forgot to mention Thunderbolt, I watched the OVAs. It was amazing. And yeah I haven't watched 0080 even though it's short. I should get around to that sometime.

Being a fan of the GITS manga and film, for some reason I never got around to watch Stand Alone Complex. Good recommendation -- it's this kind of show that I forgot about even though I was considering it a long time ago.

Clannad seems to be a classic, guess I'll add it to the list.

I will throw out the Gundam Hathaway movie as well, and you can join the rest of us screaming "PART 2 WHEN!?" everytime sunrise announces a new movie that's NOT Hathaway (they have done 3 now, and they where awesome but that's not the point, there not Hathaway)

It sucks though. High production values for what's ultimately a very dumb plot with unlikable characters. It's all the stuff I couldn't stand from Zeta and CCA.

I suppose the difference is I really liked Zeta and CCA, I thought the whole "humanity needs to leave earth for the survival of earth" is an intresting point. It's why they made the colonies in the first place, and after CCA they where essentially stuck with the same question unanswered, what now after the failure of Char? Hathaway is beginning of the answer. Part 1 sets up the sides and factions but ultimately ends with nothing being achieved. Part 2 will be the make or break of it ultimately. But I enoyed it, like alot.

It got bonus points from me for being the best at showing how mobile suits effect civilians caught in the crossfire since F91

That needless mother's death sticks with me to this day.

LOL that you wrote Stardust Memory as "Stardust Crusaders".
After War: Gundam X, Turn A Gundam, Legend of Galactic Heroes, Ghost In The Shell: Stand-Alone Complex, Patlabor OVA, Steins Gate, Space Dandy, and Mob Psycho 100.
What ? I didn’t realize I wrote Crusaders :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Forgot to mention LOGH, Patlabor, Steins Gate, and Mob Psycho among the series I watched, hence the “many more”. Thanks for the recommendations! I remember starting Turn A, enjoyed it a lot but stopped watching it cause I started spending more time gaming.

I watched the first 30 minutes or so and I have no idea what the conflict is, who the factions are and what the protagonist wants.

I'm never going to say it enough: I really dislike Clannad. It did "change my life", in that I learned not to believe all the hype around some anime and manga.
I also disliked Little Busters, but loved Angel Beats, as well as Ef (I think it is from the same author?), mostly Memories, Melodies not as much.

Babies first crying series. Same with AnoHana.

So they are fighting aliens, but they also have rank battle simulation that decides the ranking of the team. The alien battle currently only happens at the beginning of the story and the beginning of season 2. The rest is focused on battles between teams to prepare to go to the alien world.

Current arc in the manga is away team test, after this arc most likely we will go to the alien world.

World Trigger is slow-burn series. The story is moving slowly and the manga chapter releases irregularly because the author just recovered. But the battle is really great because the power level is really balanced

Grave of the Fireflies is actually good though.... 😢

Sorry but as someone who's gone though far too much anime in my life I honestly just cannot understand Clannad hate in it's genre outside of people doing a "I hate this band because it's popular now" stance.

I saw Clannad as it was airing and compared to it's sister productions Kanon (2006) and Air it's drastically superior. Even extending this out to other slice of life/Drama series of the time your looking at Shuffle and Higurashi, again superior.

Even decades after it's release your yet to see many slice of life series where the set up is a typical harem but the boy makes a choice... and then the series continues, there's simply decades later not many that pull this off and its arguably still the best at it. The only two I can think of is the prior mentioned Shuffle and stretching it a bit the currently airing Mushoku Tensei.

Too many people say it works and works so well that it's a literal meme for me to take anyone serious who says its undercooked or underdelivered, but then again I dated a girl who told me John Carpenters The Thing was boring and the monster looked stupid, so there's no accounting for taste.

Going to the alien world to fight them there? Now that sounds really interesting.

I disliked Clannad too but only the third arc due to Nagisa sucking shit (the first two arcs not focused on her were decent).

So the backstory reveals Nagisa’s parents were both very busy business types. And that one night they couldn’t manage to get a babysitter, so they just left her, when she was like two or three years old, by herself that night while they went off to some important meeting or whatever.

Nagisa manages to get outside, confused as to why her parents just left her all alone, and nearly dies due to the cold temperature. She’s saved at a hospital but now has some vague disease for life as a result.

Her parents vow to be better, both quit their jobs, and start their own bakery so they can always be there for their daughter.

…….so yeah, I’m not sure how child services work in Japan, but in the US, that child would have been removed from their care insanely fast after nearly getting their child killed because “OMG, important business meeting!” So let’s just reflect that her parents should be grateful as fuck they still have custody.

Now, why hate Nagisa for this? Well, mind you, the characters have been working on this play the whole season. Kind of a big deal.

So when Nagisa discovers what happened to her as a child as she was too young then to remember it, she……proceeds to blame herself. She sees the moment where her stupid ass parents nearly got a toddler killed and concludes, “OMG, I’m awful, I ruined my parents’ dreams!”

the naked gun facepalm GIF

After this idiotic interpretation of an event where two adults nearly causing a child to lose her life, she proceeds to later freak out on stage and nearly ruins the play everyone had worked so hard for. It takes her dad showing up and declaring that she is her parents’ true dream-

Mean Girls Halloween GIF

-that she finally grows a few brain cells and realizes blaming herself is stupid beyond belief.

But yeah, worse arc from that writer, even worse than some of the arcs in Air (though that was likely due to anime rushing the original visual novel arcs, Air having only 12 episodes compared to Kanon having 24 and Clannad having 48). Ruined the character for me, and couple that with her lack of chemistry with the male lead (seriously, they act like siblings more, it’s gross to think of them hooking up), I wasn’t touching Clannad After Story with a ten foot pole. Kyou and Tomoyo were the real MVP ladies of that show, and either would have been an actual good choice for the male lead to end up with.

Angel Beats does slap, agreed there. I really did enjoy Kanon, you might like it, it is similar to Clannad, Little Busters, and ef, so guess it‘s like a 30-40% chance you’d enjoy it. I can’t recommend Air, at least the anime version, as I said in the spoiler bit it was too rushed. Like, some shit happens that makes zero sense and feels like entire characters just vanished without barely an explanation, again I assume the original visual novel makes more sense.

I just started watching Frienen

First episode was good but so far I'm not really getting why the show is so popular
Main character is an elf.
28 episode series with mostly likeable characters and decent production values from animation to music and animated by Madhouse in 2024.
Main character is an elf.
90 minute/4 episode premier probably didn't hurt.
Oh, and the main character is an elf. That's probably all it took to be honest.

I just started it and so far it's good

I'll see if I end up loving it by the end

And yeah Elf girl is cute 👀 👀

Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex (Both Seasons and the movie) are my favorite Anime Show I seen. You are in for a fantastic ride
It's been in my to-watch list for many years, I should get around to it.

Currently I'm watching Gungrave and I like it a lot. A friend told me skip the 1st episode as it's kind of a spoiler for half the series. From episode 2 onwards it's a pretty grounded story about two friends doing what it takes to survive in a city ruled by crime. I've just reached the point where the story introduces the fantasy elements that anyone who knows the video game may have seen.

I watched it when it was first out on Adult Swim back like 20 years ago when I was in highschool. I still consider it my favorite anime of all time. Especially since it's basically what I want from a Cyberpunk Anime. I have to rewatch it sometime. I have both Seasons and the movie in the boxsets

That newer CGI SAC is horrendous

So I sat through and... tolerated it. The issue is the characters and political intrigue are all there as expected, but... WHY?! WHY HAVE IT FUCKING CGI?! it's bloody awful.

They did the same to Tri Gun and it just blows my mind, why use this shit for stuff what would otherwise work really well.

The problem is the frame rate. They make the frame rate of the 3D to be the same as 2D animation, even if the anime is fully 3D. If they made the frame rate smooth, it'd be better

On the flipside they could just make more detailed 3D animations. But they don't, anyone who played Dragonball FighterZ will know that.

But they use CGI for one simple fact, it's cheap and easy to use. Essentially once they reveal an anime as CGI you can chalk it up to them wanting to save so much money at the exspense of the creative vision.

Anyone that makes this choice is essentially saying "my show is not worth watching"

There will be exceptions to the rules, but the fact of can't think of any is very telling.

Trigun Stampede looked fucking amazing as does all Studio Orange shows. In fact, their first anime, Land of the Lustrous, actually initially had a 2D animation PV released before it was switched to CGI, and just about every reader of the LotL manga agreed the CGI was able to represent the manga better.

Claiming that Studio Orange would ever say one of their shows is not worth watching is ridiculous. They put in the work and use CGI to its full advantage, as both 2D and CGI each have strengths and weaknesses and to generalize one as all negative is unfair and wrong.

Here’s a deep dive in how Land of the Lustrous uses CGI to great effect and the direction elevates moments from the manga so well, and now another CGI show, The Dragon Prince, fails to utilize CGI well:

As for Trigun Stampede, they took five years to make it, made a massive worldbuilding bible for the setting that could carry five seasons alone (and they’re supposedly only doing two, that’s how dedicated they are), etc. THIS is passion. Claiming this studio would ever say their show is worthless, I’m sorry, that’s just unfair. If you want to be biased, you can be, but you shouldn’t disrespect creative artists/animators who are clearly putting in genuine work to their creation.
