If Missy Elliot is better at rapping than Iggy Azalea, it isn't by much. Of course, thanks to the internet you can pull up the lyrics of all of Missy Eliot's songs and compare the lyricism to Iggy Azalea's own. If you did that, you might be surprised by how shallow her lyrics tend to be.

I'm not really getting this "x" is not a rapper distinction. The argument of pop vs hip-hop (even that line is blurry nowadays) is one thing but rapping itself is a vocal technique, an artist who mainly employs that technique is a rapper.

Missy's a great rapper. I don't see how anyone could listen to her discography and not say she was. Especially her debut.
The thing with Missy is she's always been a feel-good, "Let's get the club poppin!" type of rapper, especially as the years went on, and people tend to look down on that whenever the subject of "Is so-and-so a good rapper?" comes up.
I agree with the good-sis Botty in that Iggy is in a similar lame that Missy is, but Missy's actually got skills.
EDIT: You also gotta remember that Missy sings and is a songwriter, so on top of her rapping she can actually write a killer hook.
Nope. What Missy lacked in lyricism she made up for in charisma and raw energy. Far more than I can say for Iggy.

I'm a fan of Iggy, but let's not get crazy comparing her to The Queen Bee Lil Kim.
Lil Kim may have never written a single word she spit (although I personally have more faith in her than that), but her flow and delivery was the BUSINESS. Some of the most iconic bars spit by a female back then were hers.

But sis, you can't take Missy's club songs and use them as an example of her lyricism at its peak. Show me a rap track in the top 40 with lyrics that aren't complete shit when you remove them from the context of the track itself.

she's good enough, botty. and that's the point. She was good enough to just be out there on her own merits and her sound. No one is going to compare her words to Oscar Wilde, or even obscure complex literacy rapper X, so lets keep things in the proper scale.

I don't even like having to defend Iggy but don't see the point in arguing whether she doesn't write her lyrics. Missy songs were always collaborations with Timbo, who also I might add has had a team of producers working under him. It's the same thing as trying to draw a line between underground or backpack rap and current commercial hip hop. It's a tired ass argument. Last I checked the last Kanye album didn't feature a justin Vernon, Arca, Hudson mohawke, etc.
