Airforms are nice aside from the Engrish logos.

I got one along with my Mana Blue GBA SP when I ordered it from Play-Asia. Works really well, as I've yet to get a scratch on it. I ordered an Airform pouch for the DS along with One Line Puzzle from Play-Asia about a month ago... if only it'd get here :/

D: I want a psp case that also carries the power cord. Oh, and also to hold UMDs in a safe manner because sony was retarded to have designed them without a gate.

Whoa whoa whoa. NO GATE? What the fuck was Sony thinking?

I thought UMD were basically revamped MD, and MD are virtually indestructible. I can't believe UMD would be so underprotected like that. :\

I was pretty disappointed with the DS cards as well, with the exposed pins and all.

I feel safer about carrying a bunch of DS cards than UMDs. Usually, I can carry around an MD in my pocket no problem. It'd go through hell and it'd still plays fine :/ But UMDs? Fuck you Sony.

DS cards are going to be nowhere near as durable as say, GBA carts. And yes, I've had MD go through hell and back and nary a problem, ever. Even with years old discs.

I can't understand this no gate on UMD. The mind.... boggles.

Do you guys think a sock would do a good job of protecting the PSP? I mean one of high quality of course...not your cheap Kmart socks. (Do they make silk socks…?)

:)

Maybe the gate wouldn't work with the engineering of the drive, and all.

Well from what I've seen the MD have a similar drive setup to a PSP and they use gates just fine... I still think it's very very bizarre...

I thought half the appeal of the PSP was its "incredibly sexy, stylish design." But then you have to go buy a big, bulky, nerdy case to protect it and carry around all your extra batteries. Dumb.

I hadn't thought of that part. I just presumed it was similar to an eject button being pressed (in this case "forced" on the PSP) on the Sharp models of MD players. (Which can and will send MDs flying much to my simpleminded amusement.)

This totally came out of left field for me, I should have been paying more attention to the UMD itself instead of just the PSP hardware...

The origioanl case posted is certainly the best one yet ... Tekkies will eat it up, very clean aesthetic and complements the PSP

Everything else still looks like portable-games cases

Just brainstorming here, but the gate could be a liability as much as it is protective. Catch the edge of the gate on something and you could bend it out of place. I've certainly had it happen to me in the past with the occasional floppy disc or MD. Perhaps the protective factor isn't as great as we think? It's not like the gate actually forms an airtight seal - liquid or particulate matter could still get in the casing.

Or maybe it just turns out that Sony could save exactly xx cents per disc if they left off a gate mechanism and since they're hoping to move tens of millions of them, it turns out to be a decent savings.

Well MD gates are almost impossible to open by hand (unlike Floppy 3.5 discs), which really helped to protect them from scratches, dust and the like.

I'm sure there is a reason, but it is bizarre.

I'm going to be totally paranoid about my PSP games now.

True, they are more secure than the gates on floppies in that regard, but I was thinking more in terms of lifting one of the edges of the gate, which isn't that hard.

Very true, I'm not arguing with you on that.

I just presumed that UMD = MD on steroids. Ugh. My own fault, but it isn't that smart. At the very least, a gate would prevent most common scratches from happening. :\

Hahaha no, I wish. If I did I'd have already ranted on this subject extensively. :P

First I'm broke, second I've had very bad experiences with first generation Sony hardware. I think it's just me though, I mean shit; I've had a Discman burst into flames on me. (Well not exactly flames, but there was smoke!)

Even though I'm saying I'll be waiting out the revisions, I'm pretty sure as soon as I scrape together some cash I'll get one. Well at least when something I MUST HAVE (Princess Crown ahoy) is released. I do want Lumines badly though.

So did you just acquire a PSP? Sounds like it...

Well, I'm one of the Import PSP owners out there if that matters any. It was quite a shock to open up shin sangoku musou and see a open slot on the back of the UMD :P scratches, prints! Even if folks here would try to take best precautions possible, the point is that the optical media is exposed! :/

Heh, so now we have to keep our already encased UMD media...in another case. Why the heck didn't they go it one step further and put a latch on it. Not only is it now exposed to dust and assorted crap, but it also has a little enclosed plastic house to live in.

I actually wasted the dough on the Dynasty Warriors boxed set to get the Koei PSP case. It's actually really nice. Room enough for several UMDS and a velvety panel that goes across the screen for extra protection. Some non descript pouches to put headphones and such in and room enough for ... i dunno... instruction books or something. Pretty nice, although probably not worth quite what it cost me.

Defensor, what's that nice blue sleeve thing that you posted? Is that for sale anywhere? Does it come with a screen protector?

I bought a screen protector overlay thing, but long story short, I found one spec of dust after application stuck in there and went to redo it... and it was downhill from there :(

Koei has a new case that's pretty hot. It's not the one that comes with Shin Sangoku Musou AFAIK. It's different, and it rocks, and I aim to buy it ASAP.

All of those cases look pretty ass-tacular so far. And damn there being no game storage on the official pouch. Gah.

Regardless, the official pouch + screen protector is getting the job done for me.

Best screen protector ever. Much better than the Hori one I purchased before which got made the screen muddy, bubbled like crazy and the warped when I tried to remove the sellotape separator from it.

Not only that but the exposed part is on the side of the disc you're most likely to use when you take it out of the psp game cases (right side) and it lines up directly with the notch in the case you use to get your finger under the disc to take it out. So if you're not paying attention and you don't take it out from the left side, insta-thumbprint across the entire disc just for taking it out of its case.

U-GAME just released plastic cases for single UMDs, 3 for 300 yen. They're perfect for carrying em around and they snap shut tightly. Well, of course they do.

BTW yes, the lack of a gate is FUCKING RETARDED.

THANK GOD it's not just me then.

Man, they got you too?

I swear, the image shows two screen protector protectors, with the actual screen protector in the middle doesn't it?

Either way, I put the screen protector on the screen, it muddied it up and left bubbles everywhere. Figured those would go away after time. Tried to remove the blue tap used to separate from the backing, and it's stuck. Tugged a bit harder, protector warps, won't attach to screen. In the bin it went. Spent another £7 to get the pro one from ebay. Excellent quality, not noticable. No bubbles, and it comes with side protetors as well.

If anyone wants a pic, I'll take one if they want. My paranoia at scratching and shit has no subsided.

My screen actually already had marks on it visible under certain conditions with the unit off, so I half bought the protector to make them no longer visible as well as protecting from further marking. :lol

Yeah, that confused the hell out of me at first. Anyway, I put the protector on, and there's bubbles everywhere, even though I made sure to wipe the screen thoroughly before applying it. So I try to get the bubbles out by rubbing the protector from the center towards the corners, and I accidentally slash the protector with my fingernail near the right edge of the screen. What's funny is that I was considering getting the other protector (which is $3 cheaper), but thought Hori must be better.

I'd appreciate it if you could take a picture so I can see how it'll look before I order the thing.

Why? Not arguing with you, just curious.

Oh, that's because the connectors are completely exposed on the DS carts, like an SD card. With the older Nintendo cartridges, at least it was protected by an overhang. With the DS carts, it'll be really easy for the connector pins to get physically damaged (scratches, etc) which would be almost impossible if it had a "traditional" cart design from Nintendo. Those could get dirty, but it'd be really hard to physically damage the pins. So, that kinda sucks.

Doesn't compare to the absolute idiocy of LACK OF A GATE. LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THE DAMNED HOLE.

YOU CAN DROP A COIN IN THERE! *Shudder*

All of Sony's official pictures that I've seen (I'll emphasize that SEEN) only show the front of the UMD, leaving the back (where the hole is) not shown. Argggh.

My paranoia for my future PSP games is definately rising. I guess I'll just have to treat them like normal console Game Discs...

Do tell us more

Princess Crown was on one of the original PSP games lists that released well before the PSP itself was. I understand it's a port of the original. Drinky Crow can vouch for it.

I wouldn't worry about it. The connectors are just that, connectors. So long as they produce a current they work fine (old nes carts etc stop working right when dirt and corrosion covers the metal layer, reducing conductivity. In this case the DS carts are even easier to clean off.

Since the metal parts are flush with the plastic and actually part of the PCB underneath, nothing short of pulling out a knife or an awl and jamming away at the connector is going to destory it. You can scratch the connector all you want with just another anything and it'll still work fine, it will only not work if you somehow 'break' the connection and totally strip away the metal.

My bad, I guess it is the same one that came with the Shin Sangoku Musou pack. But now it's sold separately, and it's hot, so I want it! ASAP.
