Ant-Man |OT| Is It Too Late To Change The Name?

Saw the film opening night, but I've been mulling it over in my head all week, trying to decide where it sits among its other Marvel brethren.

You can definitely tell it had a disjointed production. A few story hooks are mentioned in passing but never brought up again, as though we should have known from the beginning. The movie's focus on the relationship between Lang and the step-dad as opposed to Lang and his ex was a bit odd, and the step-dad had a way of showing up in scenes for no discernable reason.

That said, I enjoyed it - more than I thought I would, really. Liked the pulpiness of it. Could have done with more shrinking scenes and a deeper exploration of the quantum realm would have been appreciated, but maybe in a sequel. All Marvel films have the unenviable position of having to establish history and motive with their heroes in the first installment before they get get to the cool stuff in later iterations - I understand that.

I think I'd put this film above Hulk, Iron Man 2, and the Earth portions of both Thor films. I'd tie it with Iron Man 3. Not their best effort, certainly not their worst.

I was wondering what a parent's view of the movie would be. I'm not one, but I know how many children see these movies (they are designed for all ages after all) and I definitely raised an eyebrow at the line:
"I don't rob, I burgle. I'm a cat burglar."
"You mean you're a pussy?"

Anywho, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Had fun all around, in spite of few plot points that I felt were rushed. I feel I enjoyed it more than Age of Ultron, and definitely more than Iron Man 3, and Thor The Dark World (as far as Phase 2 movies go).

Now the long wait for Civil War.

My wife cut her eyes at me during that scene. I'm more lenient than her-but yeah that was one that got snuck in. The double entrandre saved it, I guess.

I liked it more than Iron Man 3 (which I also enjoyed) because IM3 lacks a good fuck yeah moment. At no point does Tony go all out and really show why his tech is so advanced and the envy of the world. Instead, Tony is perpetually surviving by the skin of his teeth in that movie, which wouldn't be so bad if we had more boss moments. At least IM2 had that team-up montage at the end, that was fun to watch.

Cross posting from the spoiler thread as I didn't post any spoilers:
Just got back from it. I liked it a lot. I thought it was funny, had good action and a decent story, sort of what I expected going into it. I was happy I didn't' leave disappointed.

Just saw it. Throw my voice in with the chorus of Gaffers that loved it. Entertaining through and through. Ranked above GotG for me.

But, take my opinions with a grain of salt, because I liked Iron Man 2 & 3, and thought Avengers 2 was just as good as the first.

EDIT: I'll also say that I think Peyton Reed and Edgar Wright both deserve a lot of credit for this one. With the whole situation, there was every chance for this movie to suck and it didn't. Edgar Wright gets a lot of credit for laying the ground work, and I hope Peyton Reed gets a lot of credit for taking that and turning it into something great.

What about when all his suits show up? I'd call that a pretty cool moment. Though I agree, he never got a REALLY fucking badass moment himself beyond the plane scene.

Rhodey also got kinda sidelined. The movie kept playing on this War Machine/Iron Patriot joke, but it never capitalized on it. When Tony is on his knees, the Mark XLVII shows up and crashes, Rhodey should've shown back up behind him to back him up. Quickly cut to the president hanging out in a kinda dingy and unimpressive police station, awkwardly kinda not knowing how to address everyone around him, then cut back as Killian goes "Well, glad we could be joined by the ever-valiant Iron Patriot..." Then Rhodey who has had enough just goes "That's not my name asshole. Know who I am? I'm the goddamn War Machine!" Then he just blasts the shit out of Killian, Tony tells him to go take on acouple remaining Extremis guys, then he uses the Mark XLVII to trap Killian like normal.

I really enjoyed IM3, but they needed a real moment for Rhodey.

Anybody get a chance to listen to the Ant-Man score yet? It's on Spotify for anyone interested.

It's pretty good, it gives me some Alan Silvestri vibes.

Because why not.

Never seen this before.O_o

Going to be watching it in a few hours finally. Usually I'm there opening day for marvel/dc movies, but there were family events and what not throughout the last few days.

Also, didn't see this posted and I've skimmed through every post since thursday, (sorry if it has, must have missed it).

Paul Rudd's Exclusive Ant-Man Clip on Conan

So good. Must See.

I honestly wanted them to do something like this (integrating ant-man into the clip), but thought it would be asking too much and they'd just do a vanilla mac and me clip, Marvel are such good sports.

Saw it Sunday night, so I had a day and some change to digest it. It was an alright movie. Kind of a generic superhero movie. Which is a weird way to describe a movie about a guy that can shrink and control ants, but I felt it was very by the numbers.

Best part by far was
the trip to the Avengers base and the fight against Falcon because it was totally unexpected.
Come to think of it, the fight scenes in general were all pretty well-choreographed. Off the top of my head ranking it in Marvel movies I'd rate it above Iron Man 2, but maybe below Thor and Captain America.

Oh well, at the very least, IM3 has probably the best credits/theme of the MCU right? I thought that alone was a pretty good fuck yeah moment, lol

Not many people care about the score, unfortunately.
I linked to the score on Spotify previously in one of the Ant-Man threads (not sure which one) and had no reaction.

I like it too. As a hole package, I don't like it as much as Thor, First Avenger, Avengers, Iron Man 3 or Guardians, but probably above the rest, maybe on the same level as Winter Soldier.

Fuck Yeah :)

Ant-Man's score actually has a counter part to it: "Tales To Astonish!"

"You mean you're a pussy?"

If the kid has seen any of the other movies in the MCU, it really falls along those same lines. They're no Batman Returns, but the MCU movies definitely go for a PG-13. Recently:

Guardians of the Galaxy has
people's skin slowly being peeled off by the gem, "You said yourself, bitch. We're the Guardians of the Galaxy", "This green whore", Starlord banging girls and joking about it.

The Winter Soldier has
more graphic violence (knife through hand, Fury's surgery, Crossbones all burnt up).

Iron Man 3 has
plenty of language (including "quit being a pussy" said by Tony to the kid), people exploding, repulsor beam through chest.

Ant-Man was pretty mild in comparison to some of the others, I think. Henchmen weren't getting murdered by the dozen like they would if Black Widow or Iron Man were around. My 6 and 7-year-old had no problem, loved the movie. I'm sure the language was better than what they hear at school.

Ant-Man back up to 80% RT. It looks so much better than 79%

If it could keep up the 80% that'd be pretty impressive. In terms of the MCU it'd only be behind Captain America 2, Guardians, Avengers and Iron Man 1. I don't think anyone would expect that out of a movie that people thought was hurriedly thrown together from Edgar Wright's sloppy seconds.

Just finished the movie and I really liked it! The movie hit mostly all of the right notes, and while some moments seemed unnecessary, i.e. the fight between Scott and
Falcon
, they were balanced by the quiet family moments.

Marvel needs to sort out their villains, they always get the costume and design down but very few are compelling.

The the shrinking scenes created some interesting set pieces, especially when Scott went
subatomic
. I went in expecting a mediocre movie, and finished with an above average, but fun movie. Could Edgar Wright have made a better movie? Most likely yes and I would have loved that movie, but what's done is done.

Now that Thomas the Tank Engine has joined the MCU I believe this was his origin story.

To doomsayers(and Edgar Wright fanboys):

It was not a complete disaster.

Just came back from my screening. Loved it. The comedic cues were right on point and the action was fantastic. Aside from some sloppy editing, especially in the first two acts, and Cross' potential remaining untapped I can't think of any glaring flaws with it. Current MCU ranking:

S-Tier: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man

A-Tier: Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers

B-Tier: Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron

C-Tier: Thor, Thor: The Dark World

D-Tier: The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2

Wait, you loved it but you put it in the s*** tier? Or is that a typo?

Just came back from the theater. Liked it a lot. Felt fresh rather than generic been there done that stuff, thankfully.

Hey is Ant Man worth seeing in 3D?

I usually don't like 3D, almost always try to get 2D showings but over here they're pretty much non-existant, not to mention all the bigger screens are usually for 3D showings. I actually liked the 3D in this movie (I think I can count the number of movies that I liked the 3d for on one hand).

This time the soundtrack was even more unpresent then in the average Marvel movie IMO.
I agree, that in the Marvel movies, and most modern Hollywood movies, the score is under-present. But I think Ant-Man is on of the better examples. The theme is pretty simple, and I was humming along some of the time.

it actually stands for "Sagat Tier" originally created in SFIV vanilla
Of course the S stands for Sonic, after all S is the best rank in 3D Sonic masterpiecesgames, duh :)

I feel that this just is very mediocre... wish I liked it more because I want to like it, but it's just boring for the first hour except for Stoll's ham and Douglas' natural charisma... And I watched it twice!

well it's pretty much what I expected

and that is:

I enjoyed it, it has good bits, but it fealt like real untapped potential, super formulaic, and it's impossible for me to judge it without immediatly thinking how much of a better film it'd be if they kept Edgar.

emphasis on formulaic btw. from the evil EEEEVIIIILL villain, to the character progession, the script, the pace, the "comedy relief 3 different races buddies"

some stuff felt so forced for the benefit of telling a really cliche story that it's just impossible not to realize the disjointed production and how that script could have used a lot more polish. some real badly covered deus ex machina stuff too

It looked that way for the trailer but yeah. "this is your chance", "time to make it right", *goes kiss daughter on forehead*. I dunno, that aspect didnt really work for me. felt really forced and the flow of it was just odd

most forced thing MIGHT be the "I didnt tell you to protect you" that...... doesnt make any sense... at all. He's doing the opposite, by telling her he is protecting her.

I sound harsh but that's mostly cause as it is this is just a fun totally forgettable romp and Wright would have elevated it so, so much more

Gonna go see it in 12 hours at the premiere of my country's biggest cinema. And I'm really not hyped at the moment. But I probably will be closer to 7 tonight, and it'll be the first MCU movie I'm hyped about going into the theatre.

As of now though, I'm not hyped. Probably because I expect a super formulaic film.
