Ant-Man |OT| Is It Too Late To Change The Name?

well it's pretty much what I expected

and that is:

I enjoyed it, it has good bits, but it fealt like real untapped potential, super formulaic, and it's impossible for me to judge it without immediatly thinking how much of a better film it'd be if they kept Edgar.

emphasis on formulaic btw. from the evil EEEEVIIIILL villain, to the character progession, the script, the pace, the "comedy relief 3 different races buddies"

some stuff felt so forced for the benefit of telling a really cliche story that it's just impossible not to realize the disjointed production and how that script could have used a lot more polish. some real badly covered deus ex machina stuff too

It looked that way for the trailer but yeah. "this is your chance", "time to make it right", *goes kiss daughter on forehead*. I dunno, that aspect didnt really work for me. felt really forced and the flow of it was just odd

most forced thing MIGHT be the "I didnt tell you to protect you" that...... doesnt make any sense... at all. He's doing the opposite, by telling her he is protecting her.

I sound harsh but that's mostly cause as it is this is just a fun totally forgettable romp and Wright would have elevated it so, so much more

That is exactly the way I felt. It was a pretty solid movie, but ultimately pretty forgettable. I would have loved to see what Wright had planned 'cuz the movie had tons of plot holes that feel like they were kinda shoddily put together.

I really enjoyed this last night definitely better the Age of Ultron. Need to watch it again before I decide really where it goes.

I thought the humor was great and lossed it at the
the giant Thomas the Tank engine, also the giant ant was a nice touch
.
Did like the fact they included
the subatomic realm which i didn't think they would mention in this film.

In terms of favorite Marvel movies I think this is second only to Guardians of the Galaxy to me. I really loved it that much. It brought back the MCU to a grounded, self-contained state and with the exception of one scene most of this movie is free from world-building, and most of the cameos/fan nods could have been replaced with non-descript names. It makes it all the more confusing why the fuck Edgar Wright signed off on this since a majority of it feels like it has his spirit, and it made me completely ignore thinking about the "what if". Peyton Reed did a good job maintaining a balance of both worlds and I'm surprised the end-result is this good. It kept surprising me with how clever it was, how funny it was, how well directed the action beats were. The heist concept was well executed and I loved seeing the Ant-Man suit do what it does.

I'm really that surprised I loved this movie so much. This is what I wanted to see more from Marvel. I hope Marvel takes some notes from this movie because with all the self-contained new characters that will be joining the fold in Phase 3, they could do well with studying what worked here. This movie feels like Phase 2's answer to Iron Man 1, but I'd argue that it's even better than that movie since this one doesn't hamfist a setup for it's third act and is constantly moving toward a story goal. It's structurally dynamite. The audience in the theater I went to was often found laughing, applauding, catching onto super small details and the movie ended with applause from the crowd, which I haven't seen in a Marvel movie here since the first Avengers.

I think this is the first Marvel solo movie where I really liked all of the main character's allies. Paul Rudd is the man, Pena was hilarious, and my god Michael Douglas was amazing. Evangeline Lilly was pretty damn awesome as well :) Great movie and honestly this might be tied up there with GOTG as my favorite MCU movie.

Ant-Man set to be #1 for a second week in a row.

Aww yeah. Looks like the horrible reviews for Pixels helped out.

That "A" Cinemascore/word of mouth seems to have helped as well

He actually addressed what I've seen so many people on GAF argue about for pages on here,
whether or not Cross' had any exposure to the particles and was driven crazy.

Sounds like their justification had been that
he was going into the test chamber with no protection when they were experimenting on the sheep.

Yeah I mean you see them watching from upstairs and next time you see him experimenting his standing right next to the damn machine while gooping I dunno how many sheep. Plus he had made and tested the shrink gun and who knows how unsafe that was to be around.

Saw this earlier. Wasn't impressed - I think "limp" is a good word for it. I liked the action, and the ants, and the characters. Michael Douglas was perfect, Paul Rudd was solid, Yellowjacket was fun (despite being the, what, fifth "evil businessman" in the MCU?). Humor was hit-or-miss - probably more miss than most of their films, but nothing painful. It just never really came together for me. It feels like a cookie-cutter superhero movie. Act 1 origin, Act 2 training, Act 3 final battle. No major deviation or creative twists on teh formula, and what new stuff they did try was mostly mishandled.
The whole quantum realm angle was the biggest for me; it was visually cool but felt out-of-step with the rest of the film, and the shoehorned in Avengers cameo felt completely unnecessary.
It wasn't bad, just... ungood.

I did, however, love the entire "young Hank" story and angle. Hopefully we get more of that in the future if the Ant-Man franchise carries on, in whatever capacity.

So yeah, a bit of a disappointment. Ants, shrinking action, Hank and Scott are really the only stuff I'd like to see carried forward, and thankfully they can slot into other places in the MCU without much trouble.
I'm hoping we can get an "Ant-Man scene" on the regular, along the lines of the "Quicksilver scenes" they seem to be doing in the X-Men movies. A cool, visually-inventive setpiece to liven up Civil War or Avengers or what have you.

I expected nothing from this film and was pleasantly surprised, I quite enjoyed it. I thought it had just the right amount of humor, Rudd and MD were both great, and the pacing/length was good too. I kind of liked how it wasn't as "action heavy" as the other Marvel movies either.

Just had to punch in and say I loved it. Loved the characters and the style and the more "out there" stuff. Solid visuals as well. Michael Peña was amazing, so I hope it's not too long before we get more of him.

I don't know why but I guess I never got the memo Patrick Wilson was out and I was kind of expecting a scene with him that never happened. That was awkward.

I saw it and enjoyed it. It was much better than Age of Ultron. However, wasn't as great as GoTG or Winter Soldier.

Marvel still needs to work on its villains... they create really interesting heroes (antman was great) but the villains are so unmemorable and lack any sense of threat.

The micro photography stuff was incredible and goes to show how different things can be from the perspective of being much smaller. I can't think of many films that did it to this kind of extent other then maybe the Honey I shrunk movies.

I'm thinking of going to see this again tomorrow mostly because really want to see those scenes again.....I wish it were longer.

I was really pleasantly surprised by this film. Given its production history, I was fearing the worse. In a lot of ways, the creative shift shows and does hurt the film. It feels like a script with a lot of different hands in it. Even character dialogue can often times come off as if it's being written by separate teams. It also has the same, kind of boring, MCU style of tone for the most part.

That being said, what the film gets right, it really gets right. The casting is spot on. I adored Rudd as Scott and Douglas is absolutely perfect as Hank. The production design is also some of the best of the MCU. The costuming, the microphotography and general set design are so cool and stylish. I also liked the dynamic of a MCU character actually having a real family to care about. Sure it came off as a bit cliche, but I think it was an interesting dynamic and gave him a more interesting struggle than just saving the world or personal development. What action there was was really inventive and cool as well.

I guess I'll end this by saying, I really want a Captain America:First Avenger style film with Douglas as Ant-Man during the Cold War. His charisma combined with an MCU political thriller would be the best thing.
The young makeup they did during the opening scene was definitely good enough that I think they could pull it off.

The core ideas of the film were really solid, but overall it was just kind of ok. There were some surprises, but most things felt like an obligation. Definitely felt odd.

I really liked the action and the shrinking effects were really incredible.

Saw the movie this friday with a buddy of mine from work. Man this movie caught me way off guard. I swore off this movie when I first saw the trailer of it a year ago. Heard it got great word of mouth so went into the film with no expectations (similar to iron man back in 2008).

This was much better than I would have ever imagined. Paul Rudd was surprisingly a good cast for the role of ant man. Didn't know anything about the comic (other then he is an avenger). Even Michael Pena's character was great comic relief for the film. The special effects of him shrinking was well done as well. Dare I say it, I had a better experience watching this film then I did avengers 2...

I absolutely loved the movie. I has my favourite 3rd act so far. If I was to make a minor complaint it would be of the villain, he isn't bad, but they could have easily made him so much better in a minimal way.

I would have had a small flashback to show Hank meeting him as he starts working at Pym Tech. Show him as a young guy with great aspirations and a desire to learn from the best. Basically make him endearing as a kid, so that when you find out about the Pym particles affecting his brain near the end, it would be a bit more meaningful.

Yeah since Cross is crazy from the get go, and there aren't any counters to show he used to be a good dude the "creeping madness via testing" plot point fell way short.

This was better than I expected going in (the trailers made it look awful and I only went because I got some cheap tickets from my friends) but holy shit is this "by the books". You probably could have gotten a superhero movie robot/algorithm to make this movie - it hit so many of the "checkboxes" I had to roll my eyes multiple times during the movie.

I wouldn't mind an Ant-man prequel too, because that will also mean more Agent Carter, more Howard Stark and also more Wasp. The potential of the Ant-man in various espionage uses that was teased in the movie are pretty interesting. A cold war era political thriller film starring a small-sized superhero will be pretty refreshing to the Marvel movies lineup as well.

Saw it last night and really loved it. Felt really different than all the other Marvel movies. Heist movie with a superhero spin on it. Really like Rudd in his role.

Both credits scenes were really interesting as well.
Tony already working with goverment and wouldn't help them with Bucky? And why is he stuck.. Wasp coming is nice too.

I believe Kevin Feige said the
scene takes place in the middle of Civil War, so that might explain why Tony's already with the government at this point.

Just saw it last night. Definitely one of the better mcu movies, even though I like mostly all of them. Like usual I'm stoked for Ant Man to team up with the others now.
The end credit scene with Falcon And Cap is great. Also really stoked for Hope to become the Wasp.

I need to rewatch all the mcu movies again now.

Before the tank scene I was really hoping that his Keychain was a shrunk down tank used in extreme purposes. Really glad that happened.
Spoiler involving an item Pym owns.

@ your spoiler. I can't believe I didn't see that coming :lol

I can agree with this.

Pretty sweet Ant-man displays: http://little-people.blogspot.com/2015/07/ant-man-installations-for-marvel.html

I'll admit I have been suffering some superhero fatigue and have been getting pretty tired of the comic movies for a while now but I thought this was enjoyable and endearing. I think it's the best Marvel movie since maybe the first Avengers. I really liked it.

I watched with my friends tonight and they all are into the MCU and comic heroes movie and everyone enjoyed. This is one of the best "origins" movies by Marvel and I really want to see more of this cast in the future.

Ant-Man is an amazing addition to the MCU, and it is already a success by critics and box office for a movie that many said would "bomb".
