Anti-Virus for Win7 x64

All A/V programs slow your computer down (especially file I/O) as they intercept and scan each file your OS accesses. They shouldn't suck up CPU and memory idle though.

I've submitted hundreds of viruses on VirusTotal and I've never seen any of the big A/V pick them up 100% of the time.

Run A/V/firewall, adopt safe browsing and keep your system up-to-date and you're fine.

+1 for MSE. Before I found out about MSE I used Avira which is also pretty good. NOD32 (despite the name runs on 64-bit) is definitely the best non-free AV last time I checked.

AVG has protected me from all virus's except one (it was a really badass one too). But since that incident I've gone back to having no problems.

Malwarebytes is also great for cleaning an infected computer. I've attempted to use Spybot several times in the past but it would tell me that I need to buy it to remove the infections so I haven't used it since then.

Yeah I'm just saying there's no such thing as an antivirus program that detects 100% of the viruses out there and Malwarebytes is great for cleaning up a machine, although if you get a rootkit you're pretty much SOL.

A/V is your last line of defense not the first, that's why you don't visit shady sites, don't click on .EXE attachments, run FF+NoScript etc.

If rootkit, then Combofix does a good job. Then scan with Malwarebytes.

Of course, Combofix does not run on Windows 7 and is so powerful it can corrupt a machine's registry (although it's never happened to me).

Rootkits are so tricky I could never be 100% certain that it's been removed completely, especially in a work environment.

Even with traditional viruses I sometimes see them detected but remnants left behind (registry entries and files) so in case of a rootkit I recommend restoring, better than safe than sorry.

rootkits are a real bitch. >_<

I have to deal with this shit daily (I manage over 200 PC's and half have a direct link to the internet). I can't wait until I have some sort of security device implemented where I can manage traffic. My life will be much easier. :_(

def off topic, but I can't post new topics, but anyways:

I get a lot of tearing in videos when I run Win7 on an HD monitor. I have my TV set up as a second monitor but hardly ever have it on. I am running it on the second to the highest resolution settings, and never had that problem with vista, any suggestions? The next step down in resolution looks washed out and still have the tearing problem.

Have you tried updating your drivers?

I've been using AVG the whole time I've had this new computer, it has worked well for me.. but after all these recommendations for MSE, I'll give my computer a quick scan and wipe & then try out MSE.

Thanks GAF.

AVG use to be the bomb. Now not so much. I'm liking MSE so far (I've only had it a day though). Give it a try. Also, Avira is still awesome. :)
