ChiTownBuffalo said:I'm thinking about getting a Springfield M1A.
I dunno. A 1911 was a decent carry gun for the US Armed Forces for a stretch.andycapps said:Don't know a ton about .45's, but my father in law has a .45 Kimber and it is a very nice gun. Only holds 7 rounds, IIRC, but it is a very smooth gun. I wouldn't make it a carry gun, but it's a nice gun to look at and shoot at the range. Super expensive, obviously.
alphaNoid said:Awesome news. I'm headed to a gun show at the end of the month and am looking to get my hands on an RIA.
I know this sounds silly, but Youtube is a godsend for those types of things. I couldn't find anything about cleaning, but here is one on dissembly (and in HD)Orayn said:So I went trap shooting with some friends over the weekend, bemoaning the obnoxious kick of my old-ass break action 20-gauge and feeling very jealous of my friend's ritzy Benelli Supernova. After I got home, my dad informed me that one of the guns in his closet was a Browning Auto-5, and that I was free to use it the next time I went out shooting. The problem? It hasn't been used in about 20 years and it's in pretty rough shape. Could anyone give/link me a general rundown on how to clean it up?
Thanks! I figured YouTube would probably be the first place to look, but I'll definitely check out those videos and post some pictures when I've got it looking presentable again.Manos: The Hans of Fate said:I know this sounds silly, but Youtube is a godsend for those types of things. Here are manuals (current and historic) I would check there.

andycapps said:I wasn't really speaking of 1911's in general, but just Kimber's. I don't think they're that reliable. Father in law's gun was misfiring constantly at first and he had to have it fixed at a gunsmith.
alphaNoid said:In GAFs opinion then, what is the best 1911 for say .. < $1200? Wilson Combats and the like are way too expensive.. so I'm thinking something like either a Kimber, a Springfield Armory or maybe Smith and Wesson or a Sig? I know very well there are 300-500$ Rock Islands and Taurus's but I thought they were more bargin 1911s? I know the Rock Island ones are reported to be very good, but perhaps not finished as well as a more pricey 1911.
If I had say $800 to spend, what should I look at? What if I had $1200? Also, I'd prefer buy new. I've done tons of research and I basically came to the conclusion that a Kimber or Springfield was it.. and that I would look at a Rock Island.
We all can't have they extra $200-$300ChiTownBuffalo said:Springfield. Springfield. Springfield.

Funky Papa said:1911 are not finicky; they are just costly to make. As a result, many manufacturers cut corners even in some "premium" models, while ballooning their prices like motherfuckers because hey, demand is always sky high. It's a sad testament to the state of the 1911 market than even Norinco can make and export better working 1911s than most American manufactureres and for a small fraction of the price (extra shit points if said American manufacturer actually purchases its parts abroad, as many do).
No company unable to build a fucking century old gun deserves my money.
Nice, I have my eye on a Loaded, duo tone.ChiTownBuffalo said:Springfield. Springfield. Springfield.

I have no idea what I would need to sneak up on to put a suppressed .22 into.
Actually, thinking about getting an AR suppressor too.
Nah, heck I want to get a Taurus 92 because it was used in a ton of Hong Kong action movies. So your thought isn't odd in the slightest.ChiTownBuffalo said:Am I weird that I want to buy this for myself for Xmas?

.22 Ruger pistol. Good prices, ammo is cheap, good to learn shooting on, and reasobly accurate. They have about 6 billion different models that differ in barel length, finish etc, so have a look and try some out.Soka said:Maybe GunGAF can help me here. I'm looking to purchase my first gun for the pure use of going to a range and shooting; I have no interest in using it as home defense, hunting, etc. I'd preferably like a handgun, but that's just out of taste. The only gun I've ever fired before is an M16, so my experience with firing is limited and thus I'm going to consider taking a course at whatever range I go to just to learn what the fuck I'm doing (unless GAF has a better suggestion).
So, anyway, with Black Friday coming up, I'm hoping there may be some decent "introduction" handguns on sale. Can anyone A) suggest me a gun to consider and/or B) suggest a website/source where I can look into these further? Looking to spend no more than $600 on the gun itself as I think that'll get me into an "ok" range for my first gun.
I agree, that or you can easily get a 9mm.Dead Man said:.22 Ruger pistol. Good prices, ammo is cheap, good to learn shooting on, and reasobly accurate. They have about 6 billion different models that differ in barel length, finish etc, so have a look and try some out.
QualityPixel said:I've shot one, and wow is all I can say. I'll personally consider getting an AR10 before an M1A but that's only because of the price.
Is that thing actually suppressed? Looks like a bull barrel to me.
ChiTownBuffalo said:Dude, green safaris! I want to do one of these so bad. Basically, you go to Africa. Get lead out by park wardens and shoot big game with tranquilizer darks from rifles or arrows. At that point vets take care of them or tag them with radio trackers.
And some big international hunting orgnaization counts those as confirmed "kills" and gives you a certificte.

ChiTownBuffalo said:Yep/ It's modified by Gem-Tech. Makers of some of the finest suppressors in on the market.
So probably going to check out local shop about what 1911's they got. They have the AMC Commander 1911 on sale, but I'm not sure on it's quality. Few reviews for it seem kinda flakey, mostly feed issues.
Can't find any 941's locally sadly![]()
If I had stupid money...
I would have this made in real life.

Springfield Milspec 1911 for $595 new. Pretty good deal? It's a black friday week sale going on at local shop and it's sexy black grip model.
Fuck yes, unless the other prices I'm finding for it are out of date. I know the Remington one was floating around for that price.

I bet you can just get a Beretta 92 and find custom STARS grips somewhere for it.
The slide would be expensive as hell.

Not to mention the licensing issues potentially. It's why people who make (and yes they do) expensive Pro Wrestling title belts have to charge extra if someone wants a WWF (some allowed) or WWE logo on them. Considering Capcom actually licensed an airsoft version, I'd hate to be a gunsmith who started doing that if Capcom found out!
People may be thinking I'm kidding, but people can and do get sued for infringing moon bounce castles (using Disney, Nick, et al characters). Heck, their is a reason some Airsoft guns the dealers have to burn the logo off before shipping or offer it with no refund if it gets caught with the unburned logo. So places even offer to not do an orange cap....which is a HORRIBLE idea and its even openly advertised.
I love being an IP Law dork sorry for the tangent there.
