Any hope for The Red Star?

The End

Member
I had the opportunity to play a nearly complete build of The Red Star over the weekend, and it's a crying shame that this is still floating in limbo. Similar to the much beloved Cannon Spike, it mixes a final fight beat-em-up with shmup-esque bullet hell boss fights. There were a couple of minor bugs, but nothing that would be unusual to see in a release title. Oh, and there was a piece of interface art present in the first level and missing in the later ones (ie, there's a placeholder there), but it seems very nearly done.

Quite simply, this is the best game Acclaim ever made.

So, the question is, what happened? Why hasn't someone like Majesco picked this up yet?

seems like such an awesome game from the demo. i would have thought majesco would have grabbed it.

I've heard others say it's rather good. Very much and old skooler's game apparently. Chris - the guy who wrote The Red Star designed the double ended light saber. FACT.

We [members of the team] haven't heard anything in months, and it doesn't seem likely at this point. The last I ever heard of any negotiations was that BAM placed a bid to publish it, but for some reason or another, Archangel didn't want them to have it. It was supposed to be pushed for sale after Juiced got sold, but that never really materialized as far as we know.

It seems the version you have isn't one of the final builds. The game was done barring some issues with standards that I'm not privy to. Unfortunately, we never had a chance to iron those out since we were locked out of the offices at that point. I played it this weekend as well, and I'm disappointed that nothing seems to be going on with it.

100 Bullets wasn't done for the record, so it's not going to be coming out.

Well, the only real issue was there were two semi-transparent grey bars across the screen in levels 2, 3, and 4, instead of the "monitor" effect seen in level 1 and later levels. Could be a bug, beats me. Mind you, i had to patch the thing to display on my NTSC PS2, but that could be part of it.

Edit: It only did that with Makita. I went back again as the guy (Yukoi?), and it was fine.

There were a couple of minor "enemies dissapearing into the mesh for a second" bugs, but no more than in most other (release) games i play.

Good job though guys. Really, I'm very, very impressed.

Where is the explodey head thing from?

From the 1986 horror movie CHOPPING MALL

A group of teenagers that work at the mall all get together for a late night party in one of the stores. When the mall accidently goes on lock down before they can get out, The robot security system activates after a malfunction and goes on a killing spree. One by one the three bots try to rid the mall of the "Intruders". The only weapons the kids can use are the supplies in other stores. Or...if they can make it till morning when the mall opens back up

It's hilarious on so many scales. The acting is terrible, the dresses, the special effects.. oh god. But totally worth watching.

What a shame it was never finished, ah well. What about the license is there a chance someone else could snag it up?

Anyone in Europe or Japan interested in publishing it? As long it gets published in one region of the world I'm fine with that.

My understanding is that it's not that there wasn't interest in picking the game up for publication.

The problem was that Acclaim was asking (demanding) far more than any reasonable person with realistic expectations would pay for a polished, well-made old-school brawler/shooter hybrid. You love it and I love it and a handful of publishers loved it, too, but in the end it came down to "you want HOW MUCH for the rights to a game that will NEVER sell more than X copies, ever?" So blame Acclaim's shortsightedness for this one, too.

Juiced will be an abject failure too, of course, but if you're a publisher, you can at least lie to yourself that it might be a breakout hit. Not so The Red Star.

it's a finished game which is probably doing rounds with other publishers at this point....maybe the deal isn't sweet enough for anyone to pick it up?

I figured as much.

Hate to bump an old thread, but I'm gathering word this *may* see the light of day after all. If anyone still cares...

What kind of game is this again? Why should I care if it comes out? Remind me please...

It's a combination Streets of Rage-style beat-em-up with Treasure-style bullet/shooter bosses. Astoundingly, both parts are really satsifying. It also has a great license and style and is technically/graphically super hot.

Thanks. PS2 and Xbox, right? I'm interested. If it actually gets published on the PS2, I'll definitely check it out.

2 months ago Acclaim's Interview with a made man and ATV 3 were picked up by some companies in order to complete the games. In the press release there was a particularly interesting line:
Another two Acclaim games titles, also acquired by Fund4Games are still being evaluated by the company.

Maybe The Red Star and 100 Bullets.

PS2 was the only version that'd passed final approval -- the XBOX version still had a bit of work left to do. From what I know, should a deal go through, it's likely that it'd just be the PS2 version released what with all the developers having moved on.

Word is that's a shame, too, as the XB version's supposed to be a good deal superior.

When I saw this thread was bumped, I was praying this was the kind of bump it was, and not someone replying with "HEARD ANYTHING NEW YET?!?"

The PS2 version I played looked awfully good for a PS2 title, so unless there's significant extra content in the XB version (online co-op?), we're not missing much.

I heard that the leaked XB version plays, looks and feels 100% complete, though?
